Introducing a remarkable new character from #1 New York Times bestselling writer David Baldacci: Atlee Pine, an FBI agent with special skills assigned to the remote wilds of the southwestern United States who must confront a new threat . . . and an old nightmare.Eeny, meeny, miny, moe. Catch a tiger by its toe. It’s seared into Atlee Pine’s memory: the kidnapper’s chilling rhyme as he chose … chilling rhyme as he chose between six-year-old Atlee and her twin sister, Mercy. Mercy was taken. Atlee was spared.
She never saw Mercy again.
Three decades after that terrifying night, Atlee Pine works for the FBI. She’s the lone agent assigned to the Shattered Rock, Arizona resident agency, which is responsible for protecting the Grand Canyon.
So when one of the Grand Canyon’s mules is found stabbed to death at the bottom of the canyon-and its rider missing-Pine is called in to investigate. It soon seems clear the lost tourist had something more clandestine than sightseeing in mind. But just as Pine begins to put together clues pointing to a terrifying plot, she’s abruptly called off the case.
If she disobeys direct orders by continuing to search for the missing man, it will mean the end of her career. But unless Pine keeps working the case and discovers the truth, it could spell the very end of democracy in America as we know it…

I like all his books. Following his charactors from book to book is often rewarding.
Interesting new character. End of the book clearly inferred a sequel is coming.
Well written book. Pretty scary what people do for money.
This is the kind of book you’re constantly asking yourself how much of what you’re reading might be true. And I fear it’s a lot. And this makes this story so powerful and good. I would have liked more about Atlee and Mercy’s story. but hopefully their past will become more clear in the future book(s). Good story with a lot of action and nail biting moments.
once again David has excelled himself in this book. I couldn’t put it down until I turned the last page. I expect a sequel though because I am still curious about what happened to her sister
Not his best. Never could get on board with the plot.
I love this new character!
Great beginning to a new series! Love the book! Would make an excellent movie! It is definitely a page turner that keeps you wanting to read just one more page!
A great read.
This is Baldacci at his best. Great characters and plot.
Loved it!
Hard to get through this book. Not as good as his other books.
I love David Baldacci books. This book was primarily set around the Grand Canyon. Being from Arizona, it was so interesting. Loved Atlee Pine and look forward to more books with her as the main character.
I like just about everything David writes. Unfortunately, when I start one of his books everything else is neglected – I can hardly put it down.
What a writer! His knows how to create a great story with unforgettable characters.
I loved it
Not up to his usually fine writing and good plot.
All David Baldacci are great.
Atlee Pine is in the same league as Alex Cross, Amos Decker and badass Jack Reacher. Not someone you want to mess with on a good day. I found this book very engaging, suspenseful and definitely a pageturner, can’t wait to the next book comes out.
I always enjoy this author and this was no exception. He through a number of twists into the story to keep you guessing. A good read!
