Introducing a remarkable new character from #1 New York Times bestselling writer David Baldacci: Atlee Pine, an FBI agent with special skills assigned to the remote wilds of the southwestern United States who must confront a new threat . . . and an old nightmare.Eeny, meeny, miny, moe. Catch a tiger by its toe. It’s seared into Atlee Pine’s memory: the kidnapper’s chilling rhyme as he chose … chilling rhyme as he chose between six-year-old Atlee and her twin sister, Mercy. Mercy was taken. Atlee was spared.
She never saw Mercy again.
Three decades after that terrifying night, Atlee Pine works for the FBI. She’s the lone agent assigned to the Shattered Rock, Arizona resident agency, which is responsible for protecting the Grand Canyon.
So when one of the Grand Canyon’s mules is found stabbed to death at the bottom of the canyon-and its rider missing-Pine is called in to investigate. It soon seems clear the lost tourist had something more clandestine than sightseeing in mind. But just as Pine begins to put together clues pointing to a terrifying plot, she’s abruptly called off the case.
If she disobeys direct orders by continuing to search for the missing man, it will mean the end of her career. But unless Pine keeps working the case and discovers the truth, it could spell the very end of democracy in America as we know it…

I buy and read ANYTHING that David Baldacci writes.
This is the first installment of a new series featuring a rouge female FBI agent in a far-fetched story. I enjoyed the character development and look forward to reading the second book.
If Baldacci writes a book I automatically read i
I generally enjoy books by this author, and The Long Road to Mercy sounded really good — and probably would have been had Balducci stuck to the premise of having Atlee Pine, the book’s heroine, investigate the abduction and death of her twin sister. Instead the book is needlessly complex, involving plots by the US government in cahoots with the Russians, Chinese and South Koreans. Already you likely have a picture of the complex plot twists, and just ok story. Book two of this series seems to be more about the investigation promised by the book’s title. I did like the character, Atlee, Sam the Park Ranger and her assistant. While I’ll likely give book two a go, here’s hoping it is simpler with less espionage and more of a thriller.
All his books that I have read are excellent.
An FBI agent, seemingly banished to work in the “wild west” but who soon adapts to being a one-man shop with her trusty assistant to solve cases. I have enjoyed all the books in this series and will continue to read more. David Baldacci is an excellent writer who pulls you in the world of his characters and leaves you wanting more.
I wii read anything David Baldacci writes!
Will read the other books he wrote, I loved the characters and was hard to put down. Interesting and kept me going long into the night
New series. Interesting characters that will develop into good people as the series continues
One of my favorite authors
Great Book. Baldacci is a wonderful author.
Can’t go wrong with David Baldacci. Great books!!
Love David Baldacci books but not as crazy about this series. Still a good book and look forward to the next in the series.
Very different story.
I love the books about the desert southwest and my sister recommended this book to me but I can’t get past the main character’s name “Atlee”. It’s hard to pronounce, albeit in my head. I know it seems petty
Enjoyed having female main characters.
Baldacci is a good story-teller and I liked this new character, Atlee Pine. The “save-the-world” theme is a bit over the top, in my humble opinion. Loved Atlee’s sidekick!
On a par with other Baldacci books, very good
Excited for the next book A minute to Midnight
Love this author
