“Impressive precision and heart-gripping suspense….Good characters, an extra good story, and great scenes of life and death in the wilderness”–New York Times Book Review Wyoming game warden Joe Pickett must investigate an attempted murder–a crime committed from a confoundingly long distance–in the riveting new novel from #1 New York Times bestselling author C. J. Box.When Joe Pickett is … C. J. Box.
When Joe Pickett is asked to join the rescue efforts for the victim of a startling grizzly attack, he reluctantly leaves his district behind. One survivor of the grizzly’s rampage tells a bizarre story, but just as Joe begins to suspect the attack is not what it seems, he is brought home by an emergency on his own turf. Someone has targeted a prominent local judge, shooting at him from a seemingly impossible distance. While the judge was not hit, his wife is severely wounded, and it is up to Joe to find answers–and the shooter.
The search for the would-be assassin becomes personal when Joe’s best friend, Nate Romanowski –just as he’s adjusting to the arrival of his first child–falls under suspicion for the crime. It’s a race against the clock as Joe tries to clear Nate’s name and identify the real shooter, all while deciphering the grizzly encounter. Beset by threats both man-made and natural, the two men must go to great lengths to keep their loved ones safe.

ending was an anti=climax
Joe pickett, intrepid game warden, solves the mystery of the shooter again. After 19 other books by CJ Box, you’d think a person could get tired of the same type of plot. But Box is such a good writer, and Joe Pickett is such an upstanding, honest, and sincere guy, that the story works every time. It is also interesting to see Joe and Marybeth as empty-nesters, reconnecting and working together, and looking forward to grandchildren. And possibly retirement. Nate Romanowski plays a role in this story to, with his own subplot about revenge from the drug cartel, which includes threats to his wife and daughter. If you haven’t read any of the CJ Box novels, this would be an excellent place to begin.
C. J. Box please don’t ever stop writing novels. My day got me hooked on your books and I haven’t looked back!
As is true of all CJ’s other Joe Pickett stories, this one is awesome.
CJ Box is always a good read. The book was hard to put down.
I love all of C J Box books and recommend all of them
Loved this book. Joe Pickett is the best. It will seem like a long time until March 2021.
I love all of Box’s books . The setting of the West is a nice change!
C.J. Box is a good writer. easy to read.
Box never fails to deliver an interesting plot with twists and solid characters
I have read every one of Box’s Joe Pickett novels, plus a couple of his stand alone books, and Long Range is as good as any in the series.
He is one of my must read authors.
The Joe Pickett books by C.J. Box are ALWAYS the best read. Been reading them for years and can’t wait for each new one to come out! The Picketts are like family by now, and the twists and turns of the stories are just right!
Another hit for C J Box. I love his Joe Pickett books, especially when Nate is involved.
This one has everything, a fast moving story, twists and turns, bad politicians, bad ex-FBI guy, bad Doctor and to top it off – Missy, his mother in law.
Entertaining and a good read…
If you like mysteries, definitely check out the Joe Picket, Game Warden series. Everything contributes to the plot, including the setting — Wyoming — which can be brutally cold and untamed. Joe is an everyman, with a wife and three daughters, but he solves the crimes that stymie most of the local law enforcement guys. His friend Nate, is a falconer and ex-Special Ops. There’s a new sheriff in town who is making a mess of a murder, and a Mexican cartel gunning for Nate. There’s a lot of action and tension in this book, but you know that Joe is going to find a way to prevail.
Over the years I’ve enjoyed the Joe Pickett character as he wanders about the mountains of Wyoming as a game warden/law enforcement officer. His latest adventure in C.J. Box’s series, “Long Range”, is another notch in the belt of the good guys. Check it out and any others in the series, you won’t be disappointed.
Love the Joe Pickett series and this book is one of the best in that series
As always, Joe Pickett stays true to his honest to the western code and with the help of his long time friend Nate gets the bad guys.
Books by C.J. Box are always interesting. Long Range is no exception to that rule. Joe Pickett’s life as a Wyoming game warden is intriguing, as is his relationship with his sometimes sidekick Nate Romanowski. Both aspects have full play in this latest addition to the Joe Pickett series. One of the most compelling features of these novels is Joe’s family life. His relationship with Marybeth is realistically presented, as are his clenched-teeth interactions with his horrible mother-in-law Missy.
Awesome book
Great author and book. I have read all his books.
