A love story, an adventure, and an epic of the frontier, Larry McMurtry’s Pulitzer Prize— winning classic, Lonesome Dove, the third book in the Lonesome Dove tetralogy, is the grandest novel ever written about the last defiant wilderness of America. Journey to the dusty little Texas town of Lonesome Dove and meet an unforgettable assortment of heroes and outlaws, whores and ladies, Indians and … settlers. Richly authentic, beautifully written, always dramatic, Lonesome Dove is a book to make us laugh, weep, dream, and remember.

An easy, page-turning readability belies the sheer literary power of this Pulitzer Prize winner. The greatest Western ever written, and one of the greatest American novels of all time. Plus it’s just a hell of a lot of fun.
On my top ten “best of all time” books list! My favorite Western novel! Everyone of the characters practically walks off the page. Gus, Call, Clara, Laurie – all unforgettable!
Simply the best western ever penned. The two lead characters are the most finely developed and believable rakes and ramblers ever conceived. Heartbreak and heroism abound throughout the tale and the doomed relationships alternately inspire and alarm. Tale to read again and again.
The best story teller! Characters alive!
My favorite of any book I have read.
I read this again recently and found it very enjoyable on both its surface and for the fairly gay cowboy-love story/subtext at its center.
Love this one.
Maybw the best western novel ever written, and one of the best books of any category. Highly recommended!
One of my all time favorites. Enjoyed the whole series as well.
I had to get up and get myself a glass of water when Gus and Call led the cattle across the desert…so realistic and a page-turner.
Very well written. One of my all time favorites
Great stuff. Clearly one of the best of all time.
a cattle drive from southern Texas to Montana in ~1870s with multiple characters and their intertwined personalities was a fascinating and informative read
Read it! Then read the sequels.
This was slow reading up front but Mc Murtry’s character fill-in did much to correct the plodding start. The young cowboy, his highly influential but quiet dad and the overall story was rightly packed with cattle driving, relationships with women, and the cowboy life. Don’t abuse yourself, this is a well-written novel and worthy of your time!
A great read — had me glued to the page all the way through, and I didn’t want it to end!
This is my very favorite book. It was made into a movie. The movie also happens to be my favorite. Larry McMurtry paints such vivid pictures with his words, the characters spring to life in your mind. You can almost feel the heat of trying to reach the destination. You can feel the love, loyalty & determination of Captain Call honoring Augustus …
A friend tried several times to get me to read this book. My response was always, “I don’t read westerns.” One night she called and told me it had just won the Pulitizer. I bought it, started reading, took two days of vacation and finished it without leaving the house. It is a wonderful book for anyone who enjoys great characters and good …
Lonesome Dove is as good as it gets; a great book by a great author.
Has the most incredible characters that I actually missed after finishing the book
