A love story, an adventure, and an epic of the frontier, Larry McMurtry’s Pulitzer Prize— winning classic, Lonesome Dove, the third book in the Lonesome Dove tetralogy, is the grandest novel ever written about the last defiant wilderness of America. Journey to the dusty little Texas town of Lonesome Dove and meet an unforgettable assortment of heroes and outlaws, whores and ladies, Indians and … settlers. Richly authentic, beautifully written, always dramatic, Lonesome Dove is a book to make us laugh, weep, dream, and remember.

Larry McMurtry’s Lonesome Dove starts with pigs and ends with sorrow. In between lies one of the best books I’ve ever read.
The novel is set in the American West after the Civil War. The protagonists, Woodrow Call and Augustus “Gus” McCrae, are former Texas Rangers who retired a decade ago and spent the intervening years in the little Texas town …
This is my number one favorite book
Having read Terms of Endearment, Last Picture Show and Texasville I steered clear of Larry’s Western stories assuming they’d be boring; boy was I wrong! Lonesome Dove deserved the Pulitzer it won! He takes us into the mindset of the wild west via Call, Gus, Newt, Jake, Lorie and how they experience change. A nearly Zen-like approach coupled with …
love love love it
This is one of my all-time favorite books. I like the author, and to me this is one of his best books. The character building is fantastic, so I found myself really caring about what happens to them.
If you’re going to only read one Western novel in your life, read this one.
One of my favorite books of all times!
One of my all-time favorites! So good!
It’s been a while since I read this western, but I remember being wholly absorbed by it, enamored of it, and unable to get it out of my mind for a long time. McMurtry has such a way of allowing us to get inside the heads of his characters. Even as we know they’re making the wrong decisions, we understand why they’re doing it, all the while …
Fantastic book. I love it every time I read it.
I tasted the dust of the long cattle drive much like my great grandfather did as he rode the Old Chisholm Trail out of Texas. The joys, disappointments and horrors of that era are graphically told. It’s a wonderful read.
McMurty is quite the story-teller. I didn’t appreciate the swear words peppered throughout, but I give him the original feel of the way it was. Great description and characters.
Perhaps the finest western book I’ve ever read…if not the finest of any genre. Larry Mcmurtry brings together great characters, wonderfully descriptive geographical landscapes, and action packed struggles between the best and worst of humanity. Read it! You won’t be disappointed.
This is the novel that most every aspiring American writer sets out to craft. It’s a gem of a book, lovingly written, with characters and moments that are as big and as romantic as the West itself. Buy it, read it, love it — or dig it out and do it all over again.
One of the best books I have ever read.
This is, without a doubt, the best Western novel ever written!!! The series on TV is the best TV show ever produced!!! Both are outstanding!
One of the Great Books. The story is old, a journey to a new beginning. A tale of our early west and the growth of our country. The mini-series great, but the book a little better. I’ve read it more than once.
Favorite book of all time!
One of my top two favorites books of all time.
Lonesome Dove is one of the best books I have ever read! It stayed with me for a long, long time!
