She’s no one’s second choice …Slater Highwater had his own reasons for coming home to Last Stand, Texas. And if anyone wants to know why a guy with a philosophy degree from an Ivy League school was now running the historic Last Stand Saloon, he has a stack of ready answers, none of which are completely true. But Joey Douglas never asked that question. Perhaps because she and Slater are always … she and Slater are always carrying on conversations no one else can follow. Or perhaps because she suspects she knows why he came home – her glamorous and calculating older sister broke his heart.
Joey has longed for Slater since she first laid eyes on him, but her sister will always be an insurmountable barrier between them. Sure she and Slater click intellectually and sparks ignite whenever they’re in the same room, but Joey will never, ever settle for being Slater’s consolation prize no matter how much she loves him.
Can Joey step out of her sister’s shadow? Can Slater convince Joey she’s his true soul mate?

This is a sweet story about finding love. Slater and Joey are endearing characters with great chemistry. Joey has loved Slater since she was a teenager. Slater finally realized that Joey was all grown up and perfect for him. Now he just had to show her that she was who he wanted.
I am so enjoying this series by Ms. Davis…beautiful stories with strong characters who are dealing with the loss of the father they loved and the brother who is missing. After college, Slater Highwater returned home to Last Stand, Texas and is running the Last Stand Saloon. Joey Douglas, town librarian, has always been in love with Slater, but knew he desired her sister, Diane, the beautiful one. Even when Diane left town, Joey knew there was no hope for her with Slater, as she would never be willing to come in second in his life. When Joey is attacked, Slater steps in to save her and begins to realize that Joey may have been, all along, the one his heart wanted. Will a clue that Joey remembers help the family search for Kane, the missing brother? Will Slater and Shane settle their long-standing differences? I am really looking forward to what Ms. Davis has planned for Sage and Kane. I received an advance review copy at no cost and without obligation for an honest review. (by paytonpuppy)
Joey has been in love with Slater since she was 14. Only thing is that Joey’s older sister is his ex fiance. She refuses to be Slater’ consolation prize no matter how much she loves him. Slater Highwater is a Philosophy major who came home to run the Historic Last Stand Saloon. Often lost in his own thoughts the only one who seems to challenge him intellectually is Joey. Can they overcome the past issues? One first Wednesday night at the saloon changes it all. Lone Star Nights, the second book in the Texas Justice series by Justine Davis. I loved this story and can’t wait to see what she has in store for the rest of the Highwater family. This eARC book was provided by the Publisher in return for my honest review.
