A chilling adventure beneath the streets of London where WWII-era bombs, government conspiracies, and science–gone very very wrong–collide.
Beneath the streets of London lie many secrets. Subterranean rivers carve channels through darkened caverns. Hidden laboratories and government offices from WWII offer a maze of corridors and abandoned medical experiments. Lost in the depths are the … depths are the contents of a looted Spanish galleon from the days of Henry VIII. And even deeper lies a Nazi V-2 rocket that contains the most horrible secret of all.
Carmen Kingsley, in charge of London projects for the British Museum, and Scotland Yard Inspector Sherwood Peets race to unravel the mysteries before the great city succumbs to the English Sweat, a frightening disease from the age of the Henrys.
Unknown to them, their partners in tracing the disease began their own efforts more than sixty years earlier during WWII when a top secret British mission is sent to the far northern regions of Norway to stop the Nazis from developing a biological weapon that was to be airmailed to London via the V-2 rocket.
It all comes to a climax beneath the city with the discovery of a horrifying species of genetically altered “super rats” that threaten to invade London and the British Isles in a manner more horrifying than anything ever envisioned by the Germans.

Many events and circumstances and descriptions repeated unnecessarily. Many illogical decisions by supposedly educated and trained people.
A very realistic thriller scenario with a believable plot and characters. I would hate to see what would really happen if any of this was true.
Having lived in London for a few years, the title grabbed my attention. While some of the backstories were a bit overdone, the essential plot line was interesting if a bit stomach turning at times. Several characters were sort of literary knock offs, as in nothing too original but had enough meat to keep me going to the end.
I started this book because it takes place in London. I ended up finishing it because the plot kept pulling me in with surprising twists.
This book, although fictional, touched on the possibilities of what happen during WWII and the London underground.
Interesting and well written but just a little far fetched for me.
This is one scary story! I’m SO tempted to skip to the end, just so I can sleep at night!
liked changes in historical periods
a couple irritating misspellings, but overall a good thriller
Slightly confusing . I was not expecting a horror story. However, it kept me intrigued.
Started out an interesting mix of historical and current scenes and some original twists, but ends up (by the mid-point) being a series of too many coincidences (to carry the story line) and becomes an awkward romance novel.
I don’t ride subways and after reading this book I will surely NEVER get on one. Had to finish reading it for the outcome but was not an easy read.
Unimaginative and predictable story about the London Underground. I was hoping for something way better, but was left wanting. Do not recommend to any discerning reader–one who craves witty and lyrical writing.
I could not put this book down. There was so much going on and the world it described was so easily pictured. I couldn’t wait to see what would happen next and I didn’t know how it would end.
This book really kept me interested from start to finish. The characters were believable, the story had enough uncertainties to keep me guessing
This book was also out of my comfort zone as I normally read non fiction.
An interesting mix of history and scientific possibility.
The story was good but could have been better. The mutant rats ruined the story.
I wanted to give it 3.5 stars. Not the best book I’ve ever read, but entertaining and with enough plot twists to keep you on your toes
Poor writing and far-fetched plot. That being said, I did finish the book…
Not at all what I expected – wow!
