A sinister Problem has occurred in London: all nature of ghosts, haunts, spirits, and specters are appearing throughout the city, and they aren’‘t exactly friendly. Only young people have the psychic abilities required to see — and eradicate — these supernatural foes. Many different Psychic Detection Agencies have cropped up to handle the dangerous work, and they are in fierce competition for … business. In The Screaming Staircase, the plucky and talented Lucy Carlyle teams up with Anthony Lockwood, the charismatic leader of Lockwood & Co, a small agency that runs independent of any adult supervision. After an assignment leads to both a grisly discovery and a disastrous end, Lucy, Anthony, and their sarcastic colleague, George, are forced to take part in the perilous investigation of Combe Carey Hall, one of the most haunted houses in England. Will Lockwood & Co. survive the Hall’’s legendary Screaming Staircase and Red Room to see another day? Readers who enjoyed the action, suspense, and humor in Jonathan Stroud’’s internationally best-selling Bartimaeus books will be delighted to find the same ingredients, combined with deliciously creepy scares, in his thrilling and chilling Lockwood & Co. series.

It’s hard to fully determine in what time/era the story takes place. It seems like it’s a bit steampunk.
It grabs you from the beginning, and is difficult to put down. The characters are a bit over the top, but in all the best ways. The exaggeration of Lucy, Lockwood, George and everyone else is exactly as it should be.
I look forward to …
What an amazing new series! This book has it all, children doing dangerous things, ghosts, problem solving, friendship, laughs, and lots of cake! Children of this world must be the ghost hunters because adults can not see them, therefore the children must risk life and limb to keep London a safe place to live.
An excellent ghost story involving a unique world/time. Its characters have great chemestry.

I read these out of order so I came back to read book one now. I wish I had read this first. A great introduction to the characters and the work they do,(ghost removal). I love this world that is created here. Mostly it’s kids that can see ghosts and some kids have talents of seeing …
Excellent first book in a fantastic series! I highly recommend this and all editions of the Lockwood & Co. series.
Excellent read! The whole Lockwood & Co. series is fantastic!
A fabulous series that combines fantasy and horror.
This book was so good I delayed all the work I was supposed to be doing and read it obsessively instead. It was a wonderful take on a ya paranormal and I have book 2 ready to go!
All kinds of ghosts and spirits haunt the nights of jonathan Stroud’s alternate London, creatures that kill with a touch. Only children and young people can see these threatening creatures and destroy them. Turned down by the major psychic detection agencies, Lucy Carlyle finds a job with the small, non-adult supervised agency of Lockwood and …
This entire series was an amazing story from the first book to the last. The plot is incredibly interesting and the characters have interwoven relationships that are very fleshed out. The story has the feeling that the actual beginning happened a long time before you started reading. For some reason, Lockwood and Co.’s atmosphere felt blocky to …
My 13 year old picked this to read out loud to the family. We only do a chapter a night, but it was really hard not to rush through it. Each chapter ended on a cliffhanger and we had great discussions on what each of us thought would happen next.
I love this book!
The right book at the right time. I listen to books to keep me walking and I would walk long and far listening to this tale.
