Collects Locke & Key: Welcome to Lovecraft #1-6!The Eisner-nominated Locke & Key tells of Keyhouse, an unlikely New England mansion, with fantastic doors that transform all who dare to walk through them, and home to a hate-filled and relentless creature that will not rest until it forces open the most terrible door of them all!
Very good story couldn’t put it down.. Joe Hills story telling and Gabriel Rodriguiez art make a good combination. The ending was great like other people I know I shed a tear or two. Highly recommend for horror fans or just any comic book fan.
I didn’t think I would love a graphic novel the way I love other books. There’s something magical about the story being told with someone else’s words, but my imagination. And you don’t have that with a graphic novel.
Which is why I was very surprised to be feeling all the same feelings at the end of this series as I do at the end of any other series I’ve been pulled into. Sure, I didn’t have to use my imagination as much because the gorgeous art was right there. But that only added to the story. It was more graphic than my imagination could have been. And funnier, too. And some of those characters were hot!
I’m so, so glad I gave this series a shot. And I’ll be eternally grateful to the people who introduced me to it.
I highly recommend it!
I gave this graphic novel five stars!
I don’t often find time for graphic novels with all the books I read, but I had to read this after learning the Netflix series was originally a set of graphic novels. I am so glad I did!
In this novel, we follow the lives of the remaining members of the Locke family after a tragic and violent incident. Trying to pick up the shards of their lives, the Locke family moves to Matheson, MA to their house deemed the ‘keyhouse’ to start anew. However, the past and present are filled with dangerous secrets, and soon they find themselves at risk once more.
This was hands down a phenomenal read.
I loved the artwork. The style was great, beautifully rendered, and really captured my attention. Every couple of pages I would just look at the artwork and think “Man, this is awesome.”
The characters felt three-dimensional, had plenty of depth, and felt fully realized. Much as adaptions go, don’t expect a replica of the Netflix series. Kinsey, Tyler, and their uncle felt somewhat similar to how they were portrayed in the show, while Bode felt a bit more rambunctious and their mother seemed much more realistic given their situation. I especially liked their witty, real responses to one another, and the tension was definitely there, especially with Tyler.
The plot had me from page one, and I finished this in one go. Moving to escape tragedy and finding keys that can do strange, magical things? Sign me up! Compared to the Netflix series, this graphic novel had a darker, raw filter that was engaging and pulled off expertly. I specifically enjoyed the backstories and how it wasn’t censored down. There were moments of blood and gore where needed, but it wasn’t excessive.
Overall, I absolutely loved this novel and am super hyped about this series. So ready tackle the next one! If you haven’t read this one yet, definitely give it a try. You won’t regret it!
The Locke family loses the father unexpectedly and it forces the wife and kids to move to the fathers family home in Mass. The book, like any other book to movie, was better than the Netflix series. Joe Hill is just an amazing writer like his father. I recommend this book for those horror fans out there.

Horror/Terror: Understanding the difference between terror and horror is not that hard. Deciding which one has the more weight in the first volume of Locke & Key is another matter. I will align my opinion to that of the majority and say this comic is mostly horror. I could invest sometime explaining both genres, but this lady over here does a much better job than I could manage: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zhf5lCxoTl0.
Dark, Gore: If you have only seen the TV show that has adapted these comics, those badges could come as a surprise. Sam Lesser is a much darker character than his Netflix counterpart, with plenty of bloody scenes and uncalled cruelty. I would even say this first volume is more about that guy and his thirst for blood than the house and its keys. So, if you were expecting to find something light as in the TV show, you should look elsewhere. That could change in the following volumes, though.
Overall it is a rather enjoyable comic with an outstanding art that mesmerized me from the beginning. I would have prefered a little more about the keys, but I guess there is still plenty of time to get into that.
The start of a graphic novel series worth checking out, and now a great Netflix show, this was written by Joe Hill (the son of Stephen King) and illustrated by Gabriel Rodriguez. The Locke family, after the murder of their dad, move to a house that’s been in the Locke family forever. It turns out to be way stranger than they ever imaged, with a crazy yet beautiful lady that lives in the well, and keys that unlock things that seem impossible. Like doors to other worlds and the inside of people’s heads. Joe is getting better and stranger (in a good way) as he evolves, and this is where I have first seen him come up with some truly clever and original ideas.
Locke & Key Vol 1: Welcome to Lovecraft by Joe Hill has such captivating illustrations! The details and mood coloration is fantastic! The story weaves a tale of magical keys and doorways, evil, family, tragedy, and a mysterious house.
I finished this in only a couple of hours and I was great. The creep factor was good, and the characters were really fleshed out. It open so much for future stories too. I’m looking forward to the rest of the series.
Locke & Key, Vol. 1: Welcome to Lovecraft, my first read from author Joe Hill. Extremely well-written, the characters, even the minor ones, are well developed with a creepy, attention-grabbing storyline. I’m a character reader, I get into the characters. Who and what they are. Why they do the things they do. The things that make the reader get invested into the characters and thereby the story. I’ll be reading more from this author! Better yet this is the first in a multi-book serial that I look forward to reading. Next up, Head Games, (Locke & Key #2). (RIP Marley January 20, 2014 – July 24, 2018).
Welcome to Lovecraft, the first volume in Joe Hill’s Locke & Key graphic novel series, focuses on siblings Bode, Tyler, and Kinsey Locke relocating from California to the Keyhouse on the fictional island of Lovecraft, Massachusetts after Tyler’s classmate Sam Lesser murders their father. Hill’s compelling, entertaining story is well-illustrated by artist Gabriel Rodriguez.
Great book to read or have it read to you audiobooks
