No visitors. No nights spent away from the apartment. No disturbing the other residents, all of whom are rich or famous or both. These are the only rules for Jules Larsen’s new job as an apartment sitter at the Bartholomew, one of Manhattan’s most high-profile and mysterious buildings. Recently heartbroken and just plain broke, Jules is taken in by the splendor of her surroundings and accepts the terms, ready to leave her past life behind.
As she gets to know the residents and staff of the Bartholomew, Jules finds herself drawn to fellow apartment sitter Ingrid, who comfortingly reminds her of the sister she lost eight years ago. When Ingrid confides that the Bartholomew is not what it seems and the dark history hidden beneath its gleaming facade is starting to frighten her, Jules brushes it off as a harmless ghost story . . . until the next day, when Ingrid disappears.
Searching for the truth about Ingrid’s disappearance, Jules digs deeper into the Bartholomew’s sordid past and into the secrets kept within its walls. What she discovers pits Jules against the clock as she races to unmask a killer, expose the building’s hidden past, and escape the Bartholomew before her temporary status becomes permanent.

I have now officially read every Riley Sager there is to read! I don’t know why I put off reading Lock Every Door for so long, but I’m so happy that I finally got to it because it is quite the ride. I did a buddy read with one of my friends and this is a great book to do that with because I definitely found myself wanting to discuss what was happening. I don’t think Jules was the smartest person ever and I found myself yelling at her more than once, but she was quite the little detective. This is such a great book for fall and if you want all the creepy vibes, you will get them. I loved the gothic feel, and who doesn’t love a book with a dumbwaiter in it?! The Bartholomew was a super creepy setting and I would love to see this as a movie because it would be awesome.
I was thinking I knew what was going to happen, and while I was right about one small part, I was quite shocked by the rest of it. Lock Every Door is a slow burn, but I thought the pacing was well done so it didn’t actually feel like a slow read. I was immediately hooked from the first page, and I loved the way Sager went from past to present until marrying them together into present. The mystery was twisty and interesting, and I love Sager’s writing style. Somehow he manages to make all his books feel very different and that is just one of the many things I love about him as an author.
If you haven’t read Lock Every Door yet then it is time you remedy that like I did! At times it did get disturbing (especially towards the end), but for the most part it wasn’t too bad, and I loved the execution more than anything. If you love books with secrets, this one is full of them!
Thank you to the publisher for providing me with an advance review copy of this book, all opinions and thoughts are my own.
This book gave me gooseflesh and kept me turning every page. Good book, scary and the twist is unbelievable. Great storyline 🙂
If you loved Rosemary’s Baby, then you will most definitely love this book. The Bartholemew holds terrifying secrets and I could not put it down. Great read and I highly recommend it.
My first read by Riley Sager. It was good and kept my attention. It wasn’t my favorite thriller ever, but I enjoyed it and felt for the lead character! What a twisted tale!
I really like when books take turns that I wasn’t expecting at all. This book did that, in spades. This is my first book by Riley Sager and I am not sure why I haven’t jumped on this train before. Jules begins “apartment sitting” after she loses both her job and her boyfriend on the same day and had no where to go. The Bartholomew is a building from her childhood dreams and she considers herself so lucky! This job has great pay, but lots of rules. Don’t ask questions, no visitors and keep to yourself. When people end up missing, that is when Jules realizes she needs to do some digging. This is fast paced and definitely twisty. While there were some things I wish would have been resolved better at the end, I was happy to say I did not see this coming. Great thriller.
Before I even finished this book, I knew it would be five stars. Mr. Sager is a new-to-me author and I have added his other books to my TBR. I enjoyed his writing style and his ability to make a story creepy with a simple story line. I connected with the characters, all of them. If you love scary-creepy stories like the movie, The Skeleton Key, this book is perfect for you, as it was for me!
Well I’ve got a new favorite author! This was my first read by Riley Sager and I loved it! The mystery of what was going on there, who could be trusted, etc. The twists and turns. So happy I picked this one up and I definitely recommend!
A young girl gets the offer of a lifetime just when she desperately needs it. She is currently jobless and staying on her best friends couch. All Jules needs to do is apartment sit for a few months. There are strict rules to follow, but for the price she’s being paid it’s definitely worth it….or is it? It doesn’t take long for Jules to realize that something isn’t quite right at the Bartholomew, but trying to find the answers seems impossible. When she befriends another apartment sitter Ingrid who goes missing, Jules knows that she needs to find out answers and fast.
Throughout the book I had to keep changing my why and who. If you’re looking for a book that’ll keep you in suspense, this is it. The ending came as quite a surprise and it was one that never crossed my mind.
Fabulous thriller that surprised me to the end!
Very suspenseful with a twist ending. Creepy because I think something like this could easily happen.
What a page-turner! I thoroughly enjoyed this read!
Entertaining suspense/thriller with a flawed central character who just can’t seem to make good decisions; and almost pays the ultimate price. Great use of setting as character. Overshadows some of the others, including the villain. A worthwhile easy read.
Lock Every Door is about a young woman who struggles to make a living for herself with no family and no money. She stumbles across this ad that offers to PAY for people who are apartment sitters for this particular building and the story takes off from there.
WOW. This book left me shocked and I honestly did not know how many stars I was going to rate it or what I was going to say in my book review. The book gripped me in from like the first percentage mark up until maybe close to the middle. I felt that by then, the story was dragging a little bit.
Every character in this book was important and that’s what I liked about the book. One on one time with each character. I have gotten attached to so many of them that Sager just kept tearing my heart out in each chapter towards the end of the book.
I will say that I was stunned that this book had a happy ending when I thought, on the edge of my seat, “OH MY GOD. This is NOT going to end well.” with my heart beating and all. I hope they make a movie based on this book cause man a lot of shit has happened. I couldn’t predict anything except the one person I guessed as to who was behind the mystery and I was right.
Highly recommend to those looking for a good thriller with mystery suspense that will leave you on the edge of your seat and holding your breath by the end of the book.
A big thank you to @riley.Sager and @NetGalley for letting me read this terrifying novel that I was completely enthralled by, “LOCK EVERY DOOR”. This book keeps you guessing from the very beginning and the storyline and setting just draws you in and doesn’t let you go.
Jules loses her job and comes home to her boyfriend cheating on her in the same day! Unfortunately, Jules hasn’t had much luck in her life. Losing her parents in a house fire and also the disappearance of her sister years ago that was never found nor were there any leads.
Needing a new start with hardly any money to her name, she comes across an ad to be an apartment sitter in the infamous & wealthy Bartholomew. It comes with a monthly $4K paycheck and luxurious accommodations…but when the rules are spelled out, it hints at how creepy this place really may be.
The more mature and one time famous tenants are odd and are not to be bothered. The other apartment sitters either don’t last long or are disappearing regularly and this begins to add to the overall creepiness factor. One thing the apartment sitters seem to have in common is, they are loners, orphans, do not have many friends or family, really need money and a place to stay.
Why and where are these young apartment sitters disappearing to? There are so many plots that will have you guessing what possibilities are at play. Who or what is responsible and do they make it out alive?
Regarding the suggested Haunting..besides a few noises, it never was on my mind much that this was a spiritual presence tormenting the residents or responsible for all the horrible things that were occurring. If it does end up being a haunting ; I would have loved it to be a lot more frightening and real.
Wow! I have never read anything by this author but that will be fixed. This story is about Jules Larsen, who answers an ad for an apartment sitter in a famous building in Manhattan. The building was the subject of a book Jules and her sister, Jane, read when they were younger. So when Jules saw the ad she was excited for the opportunity to live in the building from that book. She goes to the building for an interview and sees the apartment she will be living in for the next 3 months. Easy way to make $12,000 over 3 months is what she thinks. While at the interview, she learns all of the rules she has to abide by while living there – no visitors, no drinking, no smoking, no visitors, no spending the night somewhere else and no getting to know the residents.
The residents all seem to be someone famous whether an author, actor/actress or executive. Before she moves in, her BFF Chloe tells Jules that the building has a sinister past and she shouldn’t move in. Her first day there, she meets Ingrid, another apartment sitter in the apartment directly below the one Jules is in. They start talking and Ingrid informs Jules that the building “scares” her. Then Ingrid disappears. Jules is extremely concerned and starts looking for Ingrid.
Jules discovers Ingrid is not the first apartment sitter to go missing from this building. As she delves deeper into this mystery, she begins to fear for her own life.
Good thriller.
As I sit here and type, I can’t help but wonder, would I have signed up to be an apartment sitter if I were in Jules’ situation? You betcha! Any single individual in need of a place to live would likely have had no problem applying for this gig, not to mention the thousand dollars a week salary provided just to babysit said upscale apartment! That’s just how they get you; promises of a too-good-to-be-true lifestyle, offering plenty of cash and peace of mind as you rebuild your life. I’d probably take endless baths and read all day myself! The grandeur of the Bartholomew alone is enough to sweep any concerns under the rug! Unfortunately for Jules’, she’s forced to pick up all of the pieces of her life the hard way… but can she pick them all up?

Riley Sager has succeeded in captivating me right from the start, pulling me in and holding tight until that jaw-dropping-didn’t-see-it-coming twist at the end! This may be my first novel by this author, but it certainly will not be my last! The mere fact that we’re given Jules’ early thoughts and experiences right alongside the “now” six days later makes it all the more intriguing. I, for one, was under the impression that the apartment building was haunted, wallpaper and all. Maybe I was right. I enjoyed the contrast between the two timelines; the now sections, so emergent and desperate, connected with Jules’ initial, raw, and assumedly innocent encounters quite well. At first glance, the end felt a tad bit out of left-field, yet after a moment or two, all of the pieces connected in a way bringing everything full circle.

I would recommend this book to everyone! Even those who don’t typically read thrillers may find themselves coming to the dark side… check it out! Thank you to NetGalley, the publishers from Penguin Random House, and the author Riley Sager for providing me with a complimentary copy of this title in exchange for an honest review.
This one kept me on the edge of my seat. Creepy twists abound in this one.
So we’ll done! Creates a world of suspense and intrigue with every page turn.
OMG, I LOVE this book.
The moment I saw the book, I knew wanted to read it.
For some unknown reason though, a level of fear kept gripping me every time I take up the book to read it. As a result, it took me forever to finish because I have to prepare myself before attempting a next pickup.
I kid you not; I had to tell my co-worker about it. Even though she completed the book and told me I have nothing to fear, i however, was still apprehensive.
What a ride.
Kudos Riley Sager. Though my fear cause me to delay slow down my reading, it was well worth it.
