No visitors. No nights spent away from the apartment. No disturbing the other residents, all of whom are rich or famous or both. These are the only rules for Jules Larsen’s new job as an apartment sitter at the Bartholomew, one of Manhattan’s most high-profile and mysterious buildings. Recently heartbroken and just plain broke, Jules is taken in by the splendor of her surroundings and accepts the terms, ready to leave her past life behind.
As she gets to know the residents and staff of the Bartholomew, Jules finds herself drawn to fellow apartment sitter Ingrid, who comfortingly reminds her of the sister she lost eight years ago. When Ingrid confides that the Bartholomew is not what it seems and the dark history hidden beneath its gleaming facade is starting to frighten her, Jules brushes it off as a harmless ghost story . . . until the next day, when Ingrid disappears.
Searching for the truth about Ingrid’s disappearance, Jules digs deeper into the Bartholomew’s sordid past and into the secrets kept within its walls. What she discovers pits Jules against the clock as she races to unmask a killer, expose the building’s hidden past, and escape the Bartholomew before her temporary status becomes permanent.

Fun spooky thriller
I’ve had this book for a while and kept meaning to read it. I’m glad I finally did. It was great fun.
Jules is offered the job as an apartment sitter at the Bartholomew, a famous apartment building for the rich in New York City. She’s jobless, couch surfing at a friend’s apartment, down to her last few dollars, and the job offer sounds too good to be true. She decides she can’t afford to pass it up.
Almost from the beginning strange things start happening to Jules and she starts finding out about prior residents of the Bartholomew that are no longer there.
I loved the story, the pacing, the characters. This was the right story at the right time for me.
Lock Every Door was exciting slow-burning suspense. I love suspense stories that subvert the ordinary, so this book piqued my interest by describing an everyday girl becoming an apartment sitter. It didn’t disappoint!
The book ramped up its intensity slowly by giving hints of clues while otherwise maintaining ordinary life’s air. The plot flowed well even as it incorporated twists and turns as Jules grapples with life at the Bartholomew. She becomes an apartment sitter out of desperation and soon because desperate to leave, but she has to go on a dark journey of discovery to learn her fears are justified.
The main character was a natural and relatable individual focused on surviving and getting a job. She has experienced many tragedies that ground her and explain what she brings to the table as a character. Her development throughout the story is logical and believable. She doesn’t have any magic bullets to solve her problems. She has to solve her problems with wit and determination.
The secondary characters were equally believable, and each had a unique voice. You can quickly get wrapped up in the lives of these characters and how Jules relates to them.
If you enjoy slow-build suspense with a relatable female lead and clues helpful to solving the book’s question yourself, you will enjoy this book.
Meh, it was ok. I nearly dumped it around the 50% part. If it hadn’t started to get a little interesting at that point, I would have. I figured out some of the villains and most of the storyline around the 70% mark and from there, the story went downhill fast. The ending was a little redeeming.
Wow! This is one of the few books that sucked me in this year! As someone who lives in New York City, I wonder how far off this book really is! I assume the Bartholomew is actually fine, but there are plenty of buildings here that have super strict and sometimes strange rules. It’s chilling to imagine the horrors that could go on behind closed doors. This was my first Sager novel, and I definitely will be finding more! It’s so good!
Amazingly written! I am normally not a very big fan of thriller books, but the way that Riley Sager wrote this book kept me on the edge of sit the entire time, and had me wanting to know what happened next the entire time that I couldn’t put the book down! I definitely recommend this book, 10/10!

Riley is amazing! I love his books and this was no exception. He will be one of my favorites going forward.
It’s a little strange, but it’s a fun read! Lots of tension!
good book, has unexpected twists and a surprise ending
I really liked this book until about half-way through. The narrator’s actions just weren’t realistic enough for me and the ending was pretty out-there. I enjoyed the pace of the book and would recommend it to people who like horror/thrillers who can handle some plausibility issues.
It was legendary in ways that could never be explained.
Riley Sager is an extremely talented author, able to bring horror stories to life in ways that almost feel real. You find yourself aware of any noises in your house as you read his novels.
Jules has had a hard life. Her sister has been missing for years. Her parents are both deceased. Her boyfriend was cheating on her, and she was laid off from her job. With less than $500 in her account and sleeping on her one friend’s couch, Jules finds herself desperate and willing to accept the too good to be true offer to be an apartment sitter. Little does she know, and this could potentially be the last thing she ever does.
History intertwined with fiction makes this story impossible to put down. The way the story unfolds draws you in and doesn’t let go.
Fantasy befalls reality in this novel, as Riley Sager brings this terrifying tale of secrets, lies, and anonymity to life. The characters within this novel are so well written. You find yourself wanting to know their journey, wanting to know what makes them tick. And ultimately, what makes them unique.
This is a fast-paced story, with twists and turns you never see coming. When the smoke clears, and you finally catch your breath- you realize the biggest and most deadly twist is hidden in the shadows.
I enjoyed this novel. It is well written, clearly developed, and terrifyingly addictive. In a modern-day nod to “Rosemary’s Baby,” you will not be able to read this book fast enough. Your heart will race, your anticipation will spike, and you will be scared.
Welcome to the Bartholomew, where residents move in… and never move out. I gave this novel 4 out of 5 stars.
I loved, loved, loved it. Without a doubt one of my faves this year. Interesting characters and compelling storyline. This was my first book by this author but an instant one-click author for me now.
This book was full of unrealistic and reckless behavior and totally unlikeable characters. I skimmed the last 30 pages or so.
I don’t know what to say, but you must read this thriller romance book. It is my number one favorite.
Jules Larsen is suddenly unemployed, has broke up with her cheating boyfriend, and now she’s homeless. She has no family to turn to, and she is sleeping on her long-time friend’s couch. Jules finds a help wanted ad looking for an apartment sitter at a high rise, exclusive building called the Bartholomew. Regardless of the strange rules associated with the job, for $12,000 to take care of the apartment for three months is just too needed and good to resist. It doesn’t take long for Jules to begin feeling things are not as they seem in this building. Fellow apartment sitters are suddenly disappearing before their three months is up, and Jules learns of previous apartment sitters who, too, have just left in the middle of the night. As Jules learns more about the building history, talks with permanent residents of the building, and becomes friends with two of the apartment sitters, she soon learns she needs to leave this building before her fate is the same as the previous tenants. Is she too late? The last quarter of this book was intense, crazy, and super charged. I stayed up way too late to finish this book!
When I started this book, I thought it was going to be a routine search for a missing person plot. But it quickly became much more intriguing, then scary., and I had to keep reading. I never would have guessed the ending!
Quick read to get your dose of “need time to myself”
So hard to put down. The ending was a relief. Engaging. Tragic.
I was not fully interested at first but the book kept on improving. At one point I could not put it down. I like a physical descriptions of my main characters, but Jules was barely described until later in the book, so I could not picture her. I did picture all the other characters. I found Jules not to be too bright in her decisions.
I am a huge fan of Riley sager. For me all his books end up being 5 star so this was no shock in that sense. The story was unique and original. I liked the characters though I think she should have been more cautious in her choices but if she had there would not have been a story. It took turns I didn’t expect or see coming and I really enjoyed it
