A hookup turned lethal. A spurned, angry cowboy. Can rebel Maggie turn the tables before a killer adds her to the list of lost causes?“Hutchins’ Maggie is an irresistible train wreck—you can’t help but turn the page to see what trouble she’ll get herself into next.” Robert Dugoni, #1 Amazon Bestselling Author of My Sister’s GraveWashed-up alt-country-rocker-turned-junker Maggie Killian is pulled … Grave
Washed-up alt-country-rocker-turned-junker Maggie Killian is pulled to Wyoming by an irresistible force . . . former bull rider Hank Sibley, the man who broke her heart fifteen years before. When she unexpectedly meets his Sunday school-teaching-girlfriend at a saloon, Maggie seeks liquor-fueled oblivion between the sheets of a younger man’s bed. But after her beloved vintage truck breaks down and leaves her stranded in the Cowboy State, she learns her hookup died minutes after leaving their rendezvous. Suddenly surrounded by men with questionable motives, Maggie searches for the murderer while fighting the electricity between herself and her old beau and her new penchant for local whiskey.
When the police zero in on Maggie despite a disturbing series of break-ins at her guest cabin, she realizes she’s got no one to rely on but herself. To keep herself happily in bars instead of behind them, she must stop the killer before the cops realize the man she really suspects is a jealous, angry Hank.

Maggie Killian, the kick-a** country singer, is a harbinger of things to come as Pamela Fagan Hutchins begins a new series , moving the setting from Texas to Wyoming. And all I can say is, “Yee-haw!” Maggie takes guff from no one, including a certain rodeo cowboy who might also be her secret flame. The rest of this series promises to be a fun ride,
Awesome story line. Unexpected ending which left me a bit quiet for a few hours. Definitely not your usual. I would definitely read more of this series. A bit raw in places, but portrayed in a humorous way. Can completely recommend.
What a fun book. Maggie kept me turning pages and I was guessing up until the end on whodunnit. Can’t wait for the next one.
I love Maggie despite herself!
We don’t always love everything our kids do, and we love them anyway. Same with best friends, & Maggie. She’s got a knack for landing in trouble of her own making, & also a knack for making you love her as she gets herself out of it. Going to buy Sick Puppy now.
The “what will happen next” sensation kept me turning the pages in this exciting mystery.
Great book. Couldn’t put it down. Loved the characters and all the twists and turns.
A disastrous one-night-stand!
Maggie Killian’s career as a country-rock performer may be washed up but she is turning her life around; dealing with the issues that sent her to rehab and ruined her life and making a new career as a business owner/antique reseller. All she needs now is to reignite her relationship with Hank Sibley, the former champion bull-rider, and everything will be perfect. Unfortunately, her trip to Wyoming to see him is not as successful as she hoped. Although she has a load-full of items to sell when she returns to Texas, her truck breaks down, stranding her in Wyoming. Running into Hank and with his much younger girlfriend at a saloon leaves Maggie drowning her sorrows in alcohol and into a one-night-stand with a young cowboy. The next morning Maggie leaves the motel only to discover that her hookup has been murdered in the motel parking lot minutes after leaving that morning. Her trip is turning into a disaster. Her vintage truck needs hard-to-find parts, the local police are content to settle on Maggie as the prime suspect, and although she can stay in a cabin on Hank’s ranch, his mother and sister hate her. If Maggie ever wants to get home to Texas she will have to solve the murder herself.
Maggie may be dysfunctional but she is an interesting character and her on-off relationship with Hank kept me hoping that they could pull it all together. Louise was a good addition to the plot and reminded me of shelter dogs I have known, The characters were well-developed and relatable. If this first book is any indication, this will be a good series.
Maggie’s a sassy gal, in her 30’s, still with potential and a strength that she seems to be unaware of…yet vulnerable in a gritty way that’s all hers. She was a star country singer, songwriter, and musician, but descended into the darkness of multiple addictions. Yet she crawled through to the other side of recovery, for the most part. Maggie continues to be haunted by a variety of ugly past events and now she’s hit by curve balls today with a complicated murder and an old lover. An involving read with just the right spice to it!
I loved this book! lots of twists and turns and an interesting mystery. Maggie is a complex interesting character and has a lot of baggage. Loved all the details of Wyoming in this book, a place I hope to visit one day! A must read!
I received an ebook from the author and this is my voluntary review. When it comes to Pamela Fagan Hutchins’ books there is no better comment than absolutely superb!!!!! You may laugh or you may cry but you will definitely enjoy reading this wonderful book that is the first in a trilogy. Enjoy!
Maggie Killian – sarky, sparky, sassy – and a has been rock singer, who’s not afraid to tell it like it is and give as good as she gets and more in any argument – a real Live Wire. Maggie’s career started well in (Buckle Bunny and Shock Jock, prequel novellas in Pamela Fagan Hutchins’ brilliant What Doesn’t Kill You series,of which Live Wire is Book 1 in the Maggie trilogy),when she moved to Memphis, leaving behind her high-school sweetheart, Hank Sibley. Now,15 years on and returned home to Wyoming,Maggie’s dismayed to see Hank with Sheila, who’s clearly very cosy with him. In an ill-advised move, Maggie has a one-night stand with Chet in her hotel room, only for him to turn up dead the next morning in the car park. Who’s the killer? Who later ransacks Maggie’s room?Is she in danger? How is Hank involved? Who is Patrick? As the suspects mount and suspicion turns from one to another, the tension mounts until you can hardly breathe, much less put Live Wire by Pamela Fagan Hutchins down for a minute before the exciting end. Get this exciting novel today and tell all your friends not to miss any of the What Doesn’t Kill You series too!
“If it weren’t for bad luck …”
Boy does that fit Maggie when a “roll in the hay” ends up dead, and she becomes the likely suspect. This is despite the fact that her cabin has been broken into, and the police have no idea who did it. She is “on her own”, which leaves her in the crosshairs of the murderer. Will she solve the crime before she either ends up in jail or dead? Will she be able to put aside the draw to whiskey and her ex to solve the crime? What an ending!
A nail biting read as Maggie tries to get back into Hanks life. They are both in danger as a killer stalks Maggie and the people around her. The author knows how to wind up the tension and keep the reader on their toes as they turn the pages. It is a dramatic tale as these two people who are perfect for each other keeps getting their wires crossed. One can only wait to see what good things will happen as the series continues.
This is the first book that I’ve read in the series. While it can be read as a standalone book, you might enjoy it more if you’ve read some of the previous books in the series.
Maggie is in Wyoming trying to see Hank again. They’ve had a relationship in the past, but Maggie has sent him away before. She finds out that Hank is in a new relationship and he doesn’t want her anymore. Maggie decides to hook up with Chet. The next morning more problems are thrown Maggie’s way. As she struggles to get back on her feet, more bad things keep piling up and she can’t make it back to her home in Texas.
This is a well written story and I enjoyed reading it.
It’s hard enough to make good decisions when you have almost all the facts. Insecurity, careers, dreams, lust, and miscommunications can get in the way too. This story has plenty of all of them, along with great characters and a good plot. Recommended.
Maggie Killian travels to Wyoming and finds someone has sabotaged her truck. She goes to a bar and ends up getting drunk and spending the night in a motel with Chet Moore. Chet is found dead in the parking lot. Maggie is the number one suspect. She has to stay in Wyoming until the police release her. She is staying at a guest cabin of her former lover, Hank until her truck is fixed. Maggie takes it on herself to investigate to prove her innocence. This is a very entertaining murder mystery that will keep you reading to find out what happens next.
A fun read.
Easy read and fast paced but the narcissistic main character was a miss for me and kept me from fully enjoying the ride.
Pamela always has strong women characters. She never disappoints with the twists and turns in her books…Thanks Pamela for another good read!!!
Good characters and just moves on
