“One of the best romance stories that I have read in a long time.” – ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️Goodreads Reader ReviewSecrets. Lies.Webs I vowed never to weave because of how many I’ve been caught in.But when I told the truth, it didn’t set me free…it set me on track for deportation. So when Madeline Commons, heiress to one of the country’s largest department store chains offered to help me with my situation, I … to help me with my situation, I agreed.
I needed a way to stay in the country.
She needed to get away from her abusive ex.
A fake relationship seemed like the perfect solution for both of us.
But there’s a massive problem with our plan.
Being with Maddie has been my fantasy since the first time I laid eyes on her.
The biggest lie isn’t our relationship, it’s telling myself I can keep my feelings casual.
Before I started this crazy facade, I thought losing my business and the life I built over the years would be the biggest consequence of our deception, but now I realize…
it’s losing Maddie that will break me.

Their love was proved strong and lasting.

This is a real “feel good” romance that leaves a lasting impression on the reader. Maddie is a southern belle from a wealthy family, while Eric is the adopted son of immigrants. They have known each other since they were in high school but the relationship becomes much deeper when he saves her life. When they were younger their attraction was was a hidden crush but as adults their relationship deepened into love. I loved Maddie’s strength of character, it was equal to that of Eric’s. Both of them hated lies and subterfuge and had a zest for life that was evident throughout the story. Their romance faced opposition but in the end their love was proved strong and lasting.

A crazy plan hatched by a Southern “Steel Magnolia” to save them both……….What could go wrong???
Live to Tell is the second book in the Material Girls series by Sophia Henry and another killer story to follow Open Your Heart.
This book tells the story of Maddy Commons and Erik Raines. Maddy is the middle sister in the family and the one that made the decision to work in the company business and succeed her father when he eventually retires. She is a “Steel Magnolia” which wears proudly. She needs to be is she is to survive her boyfriend Trent. He is physically, mentally and verbally abusive to her both in public and behind closed doors. This book starts right where Open Your Heart ends and introduces the read right away to Maddy and Erik, as he saves her from drowning after Trent lost his temper and pushed her into the family pool where she knocked her head. Erik owns the landscape business that has worked for the Commons family for years. Initially it was his grandfather that started the company and Erik inherited it when he as 18 years old, after his grandfather died and his grandmother was put into a nursing home because of dementia. He has expanded and diversified the company so that he is a successful businessman.
Erik and Maddy have known each other since they were both 13 years old, when he first came to help his grandfather. During their teenage years they had a special friendship, nothing sexual, in that they were confidants to each other and shared everything that they could not tell anyone else when they would meet behind the huge black walnut tree at the back of the yard. Now they are both grown up and even though not really friends they still have a special pull towards each other. Erik makes Maddy realize and admit that Trent would have killed her if Erik had not jumped into the pool, as Trent ran away after pushing her. Erik is also hiding a secret that he admits to Maddy – he is a DACA kid. He registered and received his work permit but it will expire in 6 months and the current administration has cancelled the program so he could be deported at any time after it expires. Maddy comes up with a plan that will help them both out – she will pretend to have a relationship with Erik, including possibly marrying him, to help keep him in the country and at the same time he will be her fake boyfriend to keep Trent away after she breaks up with him.
Maddy’s plan is crazy but Erik goes along with it because he will do anything for her to keep her safe. What starts out as fake quickly turns into something more and then grows more, as these things tend to do. Sophia has really captured the essence of southern women friendship cliches in that they are always talking about someone but they never want that someone to be them. Also the fact that no matter what happens in a relationship it stays within the relationship which Maddy does with Trent. She soon learns after being with Erik just how much she tempered herself while she was with Trent and how Erik accepting all of her with no restrictions frees her to blossom and be true in her life.
I really loved this story. Yes it does deal with the heavy subject of abuse by a partner with other people, including family and friends, turning a blind eye to it. But it also deals with overcoming it and learning to value yourself and truly seeing others for who they are and not what social circle they are in or what family business ties they have. Sometimes all it takes is one event to open your eyes and really see the world and the possibilities that are right in front of you.
I received a free ARC of this book in exchange for my honest review. My opinions are all my own.
