From New York Times bestselling author Dennis Lehane comes this epic, unflinching tale of the making and unmaking of a gangster in the Prohibition Era of the Roaring Twenties—now a Warner Bros. movie starring Ben Affleck, Elle Fanning, Zoe Saldana, and Sienna Miller.Meticulously researched and artfully told, Live by Night is the riveting story of one man’s rise from Boston petty thief to the Gulf … Boston petty thief to the Gulf Coast’s most successful rum runner, and it proves again that the accolades New York Times bestseller Lehane consistently receives are well deserved. He is indeed, “a master” (Philadelphia Inquirer) whose “true literary forefathers include John Steinbeck as well as Raymond Chandler” (Baltimore Sun). And, “Boy, does he know how to write” (Elmore Leonard).

This is another of Dennis Lehane’s great mysteries. The story of Boston and then Tampa, Florida during prohibition is amazing. The author gives a picture of the Boston Mobs in the twenties along with the cooperative police force. The story follows one man (a child of Southie) whose Police Commissioner father should have guaranteed him a …
Lehane is one of my favorite writers. I rank Mystic River as one of the best mysteries I’ve read. The movie adaptation was also very well done.
This one, however, left me dry. I didn’t have much empathy for the protagonist, no matter how much Lehane wanted me to care. He ruined a lot of people’s lives, caused a lot of death and destruction and at …
Denis Lehane’s crime mysteries and thrillers are terrific–this book was a fascinating look at Tampa, Florida, during the Prohibition Era. Not only is Lehane a wonderful story -teller, he writes his suspense fiction in a more literary stryle and does meticulous research.
I Love everything by Dennis Lehane
Anything Dennis writes is a great piece of entertainment. The guy is special.
Loved!
A Wild Ride With Even Wilder Characters
I don’t recall all the details, but as with any Lehane book, he keeps the reader’s attention for the duration…I would recommend any one of his books.
Great story, good characters, seemingly well researched giving insights into old Boston politics and police practices, old FL/ Tampa and the history or birth of organized crime and urban development. A really good read.
Lehane writes historical fiction with full characters and unpredictable plots unfolding in surprising fashion. One of my favorites.
Bravo for another Dennis Lehane Classic
well written, starts as a page-turner, starts to wander about halfway through, author seemed more committed to the first half
Great story set in a volatile history of our country. Author uses characters to express the sides of the controversial human relational issues but still work together for common goal. Very good story of two sides of greed. Greed for greed sake and greed for surviving sake.
Dennis Lehane never disappoints.
Absolutely top rate. Life story of a prohibition era gangster. Goes through about five fascinating distinct phases of gangster’s life.
As always, a great story line with a cast of characters you care about. Lehane does it again!!
The title of this book is what throws people off. This is a superior book, well-written and compelling. Read it and you will feel the impact of this novel.
Best book I’ve read in a long time.
Part of his Trilogy, Lehane did some exhaustive historical research to immerse the characters in a specific period with great detail and accuracy. Through each book stands on its own I would recommend the three books be read in order. It is a terrific work.
I have read all of Lehane’s book since he first published & I have never been disappointed. Despite the gritty factor in some, he tells a story worth staying up all night to finish. Excellent writer.
