This book will get under your skin!!
When I read the first chapter of this book, I was immediately interested. However, the book took a turn into a financial crime story tied into a murder, which I didn’t expect. There was a lot of detail on fishing boats and licenses, and money laundering. Devon Burges has just had a baby at only 28 weeks gestation. While getting prepped for surgery for a C-section, she hears that her friend has been found dead.
When Devon is home, she hears “little voices” in her head telling her she is a bad mother, she isn’t enough, etc. She is dealing with post-partum depression, but she feels the need to investigate her friend’s death. Another friend is arrested for murder, but Devon believes he is innocent.
I wanted to really like this book, but I felt it got bogged down in all the financial detail. The ending was a bit of a surprise.
I was bored by this book. It moved way too slowly. The protagonist was supposedly experiencing postpartum psychosis (voices) but was so high functioning as to investigate a complex murder involving her friend — a victim — and her friend — the accused. Just didn’t ring true and too detailed on subjects like the money laundering.
This book was so irritating. Devon seemed whiny and pathetic to me. I know, everyone will slam me over this, yeah, she’s PTSD. Yes, she almost died in labor, but she wasn’t what you would call a nice person. Talk about a crooked lawyer. Most lawyers don’t come equipped with lock picks or have an ace hacker on retainer.
Just a weird story.
