The state police and FBI are baffled when an old man and a teenage girl are brutally murdered. The blind Navajo Listening Woman speaks of ghosts and of witches. But Lieutenant Leaphorn of the Navajo Tribal Police knows his people as well as he knows cold-blooded killers. His incredible investigation carries him from a dead man’s secret to a kidnap scheme, to a conspiracy that stretches back more … more than one hundred years. Leaphorn arrives at the threshold of a solution—and is greeted with the most violent confrontation of his career.

It’s the little details that make this book a fun and interesting mystery to read, and make you want to read more books about the main character. Scenes are well painted, and the characters interesting.
Classic Hillerman and one of his early books so interesting from that point of view. Gets a bit too too toward the end with Leaphorn having to survive things that would kill any human body. All the same, it’s great fun.
Early in the series, but character relationships are forming.
Hillman doesn’t disappoint
I have read everything this author wrote and had the pleasure of meeting him once. He was the best southwest mystery writer EVER. He took great pains to make his books very accurate and respectful of the First Nation people.
I am a fan of Tony Hillerman and read many of his books. This was steeped in Navajo Lore. It moves along until the very end. It seems like he had to complete the book in a couple hours to meet a deadline. I had to read the last pages several times and still have not decided what happened a Key Player?
Not his best work
I enjoyed this book, of course I like all his books.
Having lived on the Navajo Reservation can fully understand the locations he’s talking about.
Hillerman as his best.
Not the best book i’ve Read. Too far out for me.
Maybe not the best Hillerman, but a must-read for Hillerman fans.
like all of Tony’s and his daughter’s books, it is well crafted with interesting insights into the Native American life and beliefs as well as a fine mystery.
Toney hillerman. Did not let the reader down. He is an incredible author
One of the things I like best about Tony Hillerman novels is how they incorporate the Navajo culture seamlessly into the plot. I’ve read them over and over again, just for that reason. The characters are well written, there are no excess words (I really don’t like over-done descriptions) and the stories are unusual. I’ve never guessed what was …
Fascinating depiction of Native American culture, interesting and intriguing characters & complex plot.
I love the way Hillerman weaved Native folklore and customs into his mysteries.
