London’s East End heaves with child prostitutes, hawkers, beggars and thieves. Constance rescues as many children as she can but feels overwhelmed. A solution is offered that sounds perfect – Canadian farmers need workers, their wives want housemaids. Shipping children to this land of plenty offers them a future. Widow, Mary Trupper, is wary, but the promise of a good life for her children is … strong.

Some of this is grim, but told well.
I didn’t realize what I was getting into when I got this story. I did read the whole thing and even looked up information to see how true this story could have been. I found out just how true this author put time into doing research for this story. Its a part of history that many would not wish to read about. It was a heart wrenching story of what these children off the London streets have gone through and how they were treated like trash to be thrown away by people who considered themselves to be Christians but had no idea of what being a Christian actually means. I had no respect for the main character in this story because she was more interested in herself and her sibling rivalry than she was in what she was doing. Her mother was a person to be respected and tried to no avail to set her daughter on a better course. I think anyone who has the best interests of children should read this story and if you are not moved by it, there is something mortally wrong with your beliefs.
Boring
After the children removed to Canada I would have loved to have known what happened to the majority of them. The ending is quite disappointing
Was a very good read, but had an ending that seemed unfinished. I actually looked for a sequel!
It makes me appreciate life today more than ever when reading about the tragic lives of the poor in the 19th century.
I wish this one had gone on. I felt at a loss with the ending–wish I knew about all the children and where the adoption program went from that point
Loved this historical fiction book. Well told story, believable, detailed characters. Couldn’t put it down. Made me want to read more about the subject!
I could have predicted the outcome of these children. Well written about a heartbreaking situation
Couldn’t put the book down!
Very moving and heart-breaking story for these poor children and the families left behind.
Disturbing to realize that this was fiction based on fact. Would have preferred a little more closure.
I liked the book but it left me wondering what happened to these abused children
My heart went out to the characters in this book. Well written. Looking forward to reading more of this writer’s books
Interesting subject, but rather poorly done. The ending was too abrupt, and the content was confusing. Would not recommend.
histoically informational and appauling if it is close to correct
Easy to read but it was hard to read about the difficult lives that these children and parents were enduring. Sad to have well meaning but ill equipped people “helping” these children who were in need of love and care.
You have to feel sorry for children who are packed off to a foreign country to live.
Can’t get it off my mind.
Annie McPherson was a real-life, well-meaning person. This historical novel provides insight into what the children she transported probably went through. Life was hard in the mid-1800’s and this book offers a real-life view.
