London’s East End heaves with child prostitutes, hawkers, beggars and thieves. Constance rescues as many children as she can but feels overwhelmed. A solution is offered that sounds perfect – Canadian farmers need workers, their wives want housemaids. Shipping children to this land of plenty offers them a future. Widow, Mary Trupper, is wary, but the promise of a good life for her children is … strong.

A difficult read about history in London and Canada.
I did not like the ending
The plot really did not go anywhere. Boring.
More personal than David Copperfield, a look at what it was like to be a very poor child in London in the late 1800’s and the women, and sometimes men, who tried to help them find better lives, themselves often stumbling in the process.
An irrational attempt to “improve” society under the guise of removing children in poverty in London to farm families in Canada. Without proper oversight, it was too easy for families to forgo their promise to properly feed and educate the children. Instead they were treated worse than many of America’s plantation slaves.
Too sad, but an eye opener. No enjoyable. Kept reading hoping for a happy ending. I don’t recommend it for reading entertainment
I loved the story line, however, I am hoping there is a sequel to this book as it left me hanging at the end.
A well written tale, with a believable romance, with a slight twist into a suspenseful story. Thoroughly enjoyable characters, especially Peter. I hope this author will write more of these type of WWII novels.
It’s like she took a break from writing and never came back to finish, you will get no closure at the end of this book, very frustrated. Did not see anywhere that you would be left with a cliff hanger.
Hoping there is a 2nd book continuing the story.
I thought it was sad, but a true story about conditions for children in the 1800’s. I wish there would have been an accounting of the aftermath of taking these children from England to Canada. How misguided the missionaries were!! It was a gut-wrenching book, but informative, I had not heard of the children taken to Canada and most of them being beaten and worked to death!
Wonderful Page Turner
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Chock full of historical information, vivid characters that will stay with the reader for some time. Excellent writing….
After reading this book I now want to learn more about these young children who were pulled from their homes and basically used as slaves in Canada. How awful for many of them.
did not know UK sent their orphans to Canada.
We all want to help neglected and abused children. It’s hard to know what is in their best interest.
So sad. So hard to reconcile such cruelty with Christianity. Shows the
inconsistently of what we believe and what is reality.
This book hit close to home as my grandfather was one of the home children. He came to Canada at 9. It was like reading a piece of his story. Not a story that gets a lot of press. Well down and thank-you.
This book was an eye opener as to what our world looked like many years ago. Sad and heart wrenching for the most part. A few well intended women helping to care for the lost children.
Abrupt and sad ending.
I liked the history of how another country handled the problems facing poverty and such. Great insight, good characters, but an unfinished ending, in my opinion.
