London’s East End heaves with child prostitutes, hawkers, beggars and thieves. Constance rescues as many children as she can but feels overwhelmed. A solution is offered that sounds perfect – Canadian farmers need workers, their wives want housemaids. Shipping children to this land of plenty offers them a future. Widow, Mary Trupper, is wary, but the promise of a good life for her children is … strong.

This may be based on truth but it was very depressing. There was no historical ending to it.
Shocking story about poor children in England. So very sad.
This is a very well written and engrossing book. It is also the hardest book I have ever ever read, and am not sure I would have started it if I’d known how emotionally taxing it would be. It is a book that has stayed with me.
The worst part about this book was that it ended before I was done with the characters.
Very good book.
It did seem to go on forever. Good story.
Sometimes the best of intentions are just not good enough – unless you only view things from a macro perspective. The best laid plans, when looked at through an individual’s eyes, will always have some warts – or worse. A sad time in history when a child’s life (and a woman’s) was not to be highly valued. Still, there were those who strived to make a difference. Hats off to them!
A haunting tail of the hardships and horrible conditions put on the most vulnerable of people had to endure in past centuries. With a strong message we should all take to heart even today.
I wanted to know more about what the characters in this book did after the story ended.
The historical aspect was interesting. Heart wrenching at times.
Fairly easy read. Interesting tale about a sad time in British/Canadian history.
Truly heartbreaking read based on real-life historical events. This one sticks with you long after you finish the book.
In life we get too zealous and forget about what really matters, the human! This book was very good and touching, but really made me want to smack one of the characters. All in due time.
There was not a good ending. Nothing positive in this book.
Not very well written or edited. Several apparent errors, but did give an impression of the era.
A difficult read, children being separated from their parents, shipped to a foreign land and child abuse. At times, I was frustrated that no one listened to the children until it was too late for some of them. I would like for the story to have continued once the decision was made to investigate the adoptive homes more.
The book was good until the end, but it dropped off with little to no resolution.
A tragic reality. Unfortunately they did NIT listen to the children.
Thank God someone came forth and told the truth! To many times children are adopted for the wrong reasons. It is heartbreaking when you lose your family, but more so when the people you are entrusted to treat you Less than .
gut wrenching story about children sent to Canada hoping for a better life. Some left families, others orphans roaming the streets just trying to survive. A new world is not always what it seems. Based on true accounts of the orphan ships, a very heart ripping story.
