London’s East End heaves with child prostitutes, hawkers, beggars and thieves. Constance rescues as many children as she can but feels overwhelmed. A solution is offered that sounds perfect – Canadian farmers need workers, their wives want housemaids. Shipping children to this land of plenty offers them a future. Widow, Mary Trupper, is wary, but the promise of a good life for her children is … strong.

Very upsetting ending
this book did not really finish–it just ended without telling you what happened . O wpu;d not waste my time reading it
Title was one to make me pause and think.
Interesting. I wonder how much is true?
After reading this book I wanted to find out more about the children who were sent to Canada. I’m looking into getting the historical book about the children by the lady who took them to Canada.
Another part of history I had no idea existed.
Orphan train, orphanage to mothers helpers or farm workers. Children of the poor were exploited by adults in every century.
Let’s not repeat this history with migrant children.
Being cynical I was expecting the “orphans” to experience the worst in mankind. Not disappointed-although I didn’t like the ending. I actually turned the page and the book had ended.
I found this book very sad,and ttagic.and would not read this author agsin
Sad and unfortunately probably true.
I did not like this book. I kept reading for something redeeming about it but it was so depressing I was sorry I read it!!
If you enjoy historic fiction stories, then this one is for you. Though there are some small points in the book where the story become just a little disjointed, i urge you to pick this book up and read it all the way through.
So sad that these children were treated badly. I never knew this happened and I was deeply moved by the story.
The author got tired of the book and didn’t finish it. Left me hanging about the fates and changes that happened due to this unfortunate farming out of children.
Too realistic. Don’t expect a happy ending, but instead poverty, disease, child abuse and rape.
It reinforced history of what happened to so many orphan children that were only taken into home to be work horses not loved.
Very disappointing. Not well done. Book ended when the truth of the story was not dealt with. Do not waste time reading this book. This is the very first time I have hd to write such a bad review. Save your money and time!
Want follow-up on characters.
Loved the book and the characters. I wanted more at the end. What happened to the children that were placed. Where are the children that were placed and unhappy? Loved the story but still am concerned with some characters.
I had never heard these stories and while I do not consider myself a cynic, it amazes me that the do-gooders could have been so gullible. Even I could see that people wanted slaves. I was a foster child myself, an orphan, and was extremely well treated, not loved, but fed, housed, and clothed by very generous people. I know I was lucky. This book tells a story we should all hear.
Enjoyed this book but would have liked a happily ever after ending, with all children finding good homes.
