Lion Heart by Paula Quinn is the story of the Black Plague, corrupt clergy, ancient medicine, and honorable love. We arrive in Sevenoaks with Elias MacPherson and Brother Simon as they enter the apothecary shop run by Lily Bennett and her husband, Richard. Elias though she was the most beautiful woman her had ever seen and was truly disappointed to learn she was married and to this very old man, when she was so young and fresh. As the men stayed in Sevenoaks they learned the story of Richard saving Lily from a horrible man and a worse fate by marrying her in the middle of the night. Lily loved her husband, and not matter how tempting Eli was, she was determined not to stray. Then came the plague, and people started to die, no matter how hard Richard and Lily worked to save them.
This book is truly representative of just how violent and dangerous this time in history was. There was still time for family, love, and friendship, however, and this book had those things in spades, too. Community played a huge part in this story, something that still exists today. It was an entertaining read. One I will remember whenever plague is mentioned. I recommend it.
I received a free ARC of Lion Heart from Dragonblade in exchange for a fair and honest review. All opinions and interpretations contained herein are solely my own.

“He set his steady gaze on the beautiful lass inside the shop, busy with a customer. The sight of her made him want to smile. He didn’t know her. He’d never met her before, but just looking at her made him feel good, refreshed, hopeful.” Elias had not felt those feelings in a long time since the war. He was plagued with nightmares, battles replaying over and over, darkness and gloom.
He went into the apothecary to ask for something to help him sleep. What he found was the beautiful woman was the wife of the apothecary, a much older man. He could not believe it and just wanted to leave. But her husband asked if they could stay and help him around the shop.
A touching story of survival against all odds, an unexpected love, strength and compassion. A great cast of characters who bring the story alive. A wonderful addition to the Hearts of the Highlands!
Lion Heart, by Paula Quinn. Yes! This romance novel is amazing. Ten stars. I give it ten stars. Even though there’s no such thing as a rating with ten stars, I’m giving it anyway. Oh wow. I am totally blown away by this book. It hit me with everything and I mean everything. I applaud you Paula.
I found the book easy to read. I didn’t struggle with the wording. Although, it was not heavy the book did have some Scottish brogue. I found the book very entertaining to read, so much so that I read it in one sitting. The drama from the book was so intense that I couldn’t stop reading it.
I give the suspense a high rating. My reasoning to this conclusion of why I feel that this book deserves a high rating is Elias and Lily. When they thought that they have defeated one advisory, there was another one popping up out nowhere and fought all that tried to destroy them together as one. The drama was amazing. It kept hitting me left and right. Each page was filled with so much intense drama, suspense and high emotions.
The action was well described. The details provided a lot to my imagination. The love scenes between Elias and Lily were hot. I mean very hot and quite steamy. Had me blushing a little while reading these parts.
I recommend this book with two snaps and a, Brother Simon, you are the light that guides the McPhearson families soul to help human kind. Until next time my fellow readers… read on!
Paula Quinn has introduced us to Elias MacPherson, a warrior that has seen and been in too many battles. His heart and soul is heavy with memories of the dark recollections that hide within him. Lily Bennett is a forbidden woman that for some reason seems help him to try and heal his troubled spirit. Lily and her husband have given him a room in their house for helping them with the healing plants they raise and sell. Rumors have been spread that the Black Death is spreading from France and will soon be in their area. Will they be able to help enough families or will the darkness destroy them both? What an interesting read and one you will keep turning the page to discover the ending.
Elias MacPherson is traveling home to England with his best friend, brother Simon when they come to the village of Sevenoaks. Elias is haunted by his memories with crippling nightmares. He seeks out the local healer at the apothecary and its love at first sight. Lily Bennett is a forbidden woman who will not budge in her loyalty she finds young Elias attractive, but she’s married to a wonderful man she loves as a father. The Black Death plague comes to the area and they work tirelessly to save lives. The two grow closer, but never cross the lines of friendship until tragedy strikes and all is not lost. This is a wonderful book filled with the history of the Black Death and how it affected the population leaving orphans, widows and death across the county and how love can grow in the worst of times. An excellent story I loved and I voluntarily wrote a review.
Elias Macpherson is traveling with his bestfriend, brother Simon. They come to the village of Seven Oaks for a brief respite, but hear that the Black Death is starting to ravage England. Can they seal off the village before the sickness strikes or should they run north to Scotland???
Lily Bennett is the loving wife of the apothecary. She helps him keep them all healthy. She has come through a terrible time, has she the strength to face more battles.
This is a very emotional story that you will need the tissues for. Our wonderful hero is a warrior to his core, but even he can’t fight everything. If you have read some of this author’s previous books you might recognize who his parents are by his description.
Our heroine is just as much a warrior but a lot of her battles are against an unseen enemy.
I loved every page and I’m hoping that a certain green eyed man who appeared near the end is going to be the hero for the next book.
