This vivid and impeccably researched book details the life and Civil War battles of Admiral David Farragut. It shines a spotlight and shares new details about the admiral’s leadership of the mission to recapture the port of New Orleans from the Confederacy — a campaign historians consider one of the most daring in military history.
Farragut is perhaps best known for his order to “Damn the … the torpedoes…. Full speed ahead.” during the Battle of Mobile Bay, which has become a touchstone and rallying cry for the United States Navy.
A sweeping and riveting telling of Farragut’s career and campaigns, Lincoln’s Admiral offers fascinating insights into the strategy and decisions of one of the greatest military leaders on the Civil War — and of all time.

Interesting content that could have been strengthened by a robust editor.
An easy read for a history book Fills in a little appreciated aspect of the US Civil War; how control of the Mississippi river crippled the rebel cause.
An excelent historical factual novel.
Takes no political sides.
A bit slow when we list sailings, but never boring.
Does a good job explaining Farraguet
A male of the old school.
The sea war part of the civil war is rarely given much mention. The truth is that the North taking of the missippi river split the confederacy and was accomplished much quicker than the land wars in the east.
Good background on the Civil war river battles and good bio on Admiral Farragut.
Civil War history of David Farragut, Admiral of the Union Navy who secured most of the Mississippi River, including New Orleans, for the Union. Lots of exciting naval battles and historic naval technology.
Good information on little known part and person in American history
As somewhat of a Civil War buff, I found this very informative, filling some gaps in my knowledge. It was well written, obviously well researched with a style that moved right along.
Shows us that backbiting, backstabbing and infighting have always been a part of politics and that the perseverance in the face of discouragement, adversity, setbacks, horrible losses that have to occur in wartime situations are not always related to the conflict of facing the enemy but are also a part of getting people, even though they are on …
A real down to earth telling of events and personalities directly engaged in the struggle as well as the external personalities and political pressure. A great read.
An excellent biography of a little known, but important, person.
I absolutely loved this book. I have never heard this aspect of the civil war before and after finishing the book immediately started doing more research on this subject. Any student of the civil war would like this.
excellently researched book. this is an area in which i’ve been lacking info. an interesting read also.
A first-class, no-nonsense biography of one of America’s great naval heroes!
One always hears of the ground war during the Civil war and the naval actions are pretty much presented as an afterthought. This is a good, solid history of Farragut and the naval engagements and it is well presented.
An accurate and fact-packed study of the US Navy’s first Admiral, this book is anything but dull. Along with Farragut’s personality, tactics and ships add to the richness of the writing. An easy read, it was hard to put down.
Loved the books
Great read, interesting historical stories that are often glossed over in the history books.
The Naval scene during this “war” is so grossly misunderstood. This bring some light to the fore.
I am sitting in Farragut State Park as I write this. The naval base here tests sonar on Lake Lend Orielle. I found this biography very interesting. I had no idea that naval warfare played such an important role in the Civil War. The admiral was colorful enough that the book was hard to put down. And it was filled with so much action that …
