This vivid and impeccably researched book details the life and Civil War battles of Admiral David Farragut. It shines a spotlight and shares new details about the admiral’s leadership of the mission to recapture the port of New Orleans from the Confederacy — a campaign historians consider one of the most daring in military history.
Farragut is perhaps best known for his order to “Damn the … the torpedoes…. Full speed ahead.” during the Battle of Mobile Bay, which has become a touchstone and rallying cry for the United States Navy.
A sweeping and riveting telling of Farragut’s career and campaigns, Lincoln’s Admiral offers fascinating insights into the strategy and decisions of one of the greatest military leaders on the Civil War — and of all time.

Great bio. Gets a little too detailed in places but overall a great read. I had no idea how influential he was through the Civil War period and thereafter.
Fascinating account of someone I’ve always heard of, but never knew anything about. Especially interesting information about the nasty inside politics of the Union side in the Civil War. Written in an engaging and easy-to-read style. Highly recommended.
Not a balanced history or perspective on Admiral Farragut, but a good read with enough context to provide a overall view of the Gulf port battles.
Exciting narrative of Admiral Farragut’s stirring naval career. How foturnate he chose to be loyal to the Union rather than his native Confederacy.
