Did-not-see-it coming revelation of murderer of beautiful actress. Events leading to this discovery were well written and easy to read. Good story and not unhappy but left-you-wondering ending.
I enjoyed the look back at a different era. It left me guessing to the end.
3.75/5
While not perfect, I enjoyed this first in the Penny Green mystery series. Set in 1880s London, Penny is a 35ish, single news reporter working to make it on her own without family help. She is asked to assist a Scotland Yard inspector (possible future love interest?) when an actress friend that she thought had drowned five years before is found shot to death in a cemetery.
While I guessed part of the ending, there were a few surprises as well. The story was a bit slow in spots, and I felt the author spelled out things that were already obvious, but I found myself enough engaged to be looking to try the second outing.
It’s really 3.75. I like the main characters and the premise of the book, but it seemed a bit forced. I am hoping everyone settles in in the next book.
Well written mystery from early twentieth century England. Worth and entertaining.
Limelight is the first book in a mystery series where the detective is the maid. She’s privy to all sorts of activities that might go unnoticed by a normal investigator. It’s interesting with a good historical context. Definitely worth a try.
Emily Organ is a master storyteller.
I really enjoyed this book. The main character is a Penny Green, reporter for a London newspaper. Lizzie Dixie, an actress believed to be dead, has just been shot. Penny Green is not assigned to the story, but she is asked to assist the inspector in charge since she knew Lizzie Dixie. The characters are interesting and the two main characters get along well. The ending is a surprise. For those who care, there is no sex, profanity or explicit violence. I will definitely read more of this series.
The entire series featuring Penny, a woman news reporter in London during the 1880’s, is fascinating. There is a lot of mystery, a little romance, history and great characters.
The books can be read as standalones but are richer read in order.
Liked the character and her job as a woman reporter. Good story – interesting premise.
Predictable but a fun and original read.
The heroine must face all the women’s problems of her era; women’s sufferage, inequality in jobs and wages, discrimination, to solve the mystery of how the actress died twice.
I loved this book. The characters were charming and believable. And the plot was a good follow.
I love historic period pieces that move at a nice pace and help you imagine living in that era. This author opened the door with pleasant, believable characters that I would enjoy hearing more about.
I didn’t expect to like this book. But it was very well written, with characters that were believable. I would recommend it.
A great read, very engaging and even inspiring to witness the beginning of the Women’s Movement.
I enjoy reading books set in this era and involving the theater. Interesting for a light read.
It was okay but wasn’t as easy a read as I like. Kind of dragged on.
Needs more character growth, but otherwise an OK read.
I can’t really review the book since I can’t get through the first ten pages (and I’ll read almost anything).
I really enjoyed this book and that surprised me. I downloaded it as my free Kindle First selection. The book was good enough that I have pre-ordered the second book in the series.
