Like Father Like SonI said good-bye to my son. But he had one final request—a letter I’ll never forget.Dear Dad,If you’re reading this, it means I’m gone. I had one dream, growing old with Holland. Death won’t stop me from providing for my wife. And because you’re the best man I know, what I’m about to ask—my last request—I know you’ll do. Please take care of Holland. Take her back to California … back to California with you. It’s a lot—I know. But, I’m placing my most precious possession in your hands.
Love,
Scott
But the thoughts swirling through my mind are certainly not what my late son had in mind. How do I resist this woman in front of me?
After all, you can’t choose love, it chooses you.

Like Father Like Son is such an emotional story, if you read the blurb you know the premise of what’s gonna happen but what you don’t know is how much you will feel. I had tears pouring down my cheeks, I felt their pain. Military son’s last request is for his dad to take care of his wife for him. Maquire is a stand up guy, who will honor his only son’s wishes and bring Holland back home with him. What he doesn’t expect is with them sharing the grief, and memories they grow closer, and the feelings he’s starting to have for her. Good story, with characters you will like. Looking forward to the next book to see what’s going to happen.
WoW!!!! What a cliffhanger this book has!!! NOOOOOOOO, I yelled as this book came to an end, I NEED to know what happens and I am so glad I don’t have to wait long for book 2 to come out. This is the first book I have read by this author and it certainly won’t be the last if they are all this good. I LOVED the dynamic between Maguire and Holland from the very start. The back and forth banter had me in stitches from time to time, but then my heart also broke for them both and the loss that they share. I cannot wait to see if they get their happily ever after and what barriers will get in their way (I sense Christine will play a role). I voluntarily reviewed an advance reader copy of this book for an honest review.
Holland lost the love of her life to war. When her father in law shows up, we don’t expect to story we are about to get. Their attraction is taboo. He shouldn’t want his dead sons wife. She fights her emotions daily with their similarities. As the book goes on, the angst gets to be more and more!! Hurts so good throughout it all
Fantastic! A Summer must read!
This story was such an emotional roller coaster with a SLOW burn. Great characters and story line keep you interested from start to finish. Laughter, tears, sadness, heartache, angst and a great surprise early on gives you all the feels. There is a OMG cliffhanger at the end and I need that next book like yesterday!!!
Well I’m here to tell you I am a fan of this book. This is my first book of this nature. I wasn’t quite sure what my reaction was going to be but this story is handled with class, maturity and in-depth emotions. It’s part of a duet so I’m riveted to what is going to happen.
The story brings all the feels. One character you may want to smack, lol (when you read the character, Christine, you’ll understand). However, there’s a lot of warmth, smiles, levity, along with gut wrenching feelings, emotional sadness no-one should have to face and a slow burn of love that is complicated but true. I wish I could tell you all ends well but that is yet to be determined. We are left with a dozy of a cliffhanger.
Both Holland and Maguire will capture your heart. We are also introduced to some characters who you will want to learn more of their lives.
This is an uncomfortable situation but I can well imagine it has happened in some manner in real life. This book takes this subject and shows that people sometimes can’t control their true feelings…and who are we to judge?
Definitely taboo, but I can’t help but cheer for McGuire and Holland. You will need tissues…lots of them. McGuire’s son Scott dies while deployed. His last letter is to his father and he ask him to take care of his wife Holland. These two travel from North Carolina to California in a truck father and son restored. Along the way they fall in like and find out a baby is on the way. This book has lots of grieving, tears, jealousy, a nasty ex wife/mother-in-law and two people fighting their attraction because it’s against the norm. This also a huge cliffhanger I didn’t know about!
Oh my heart broke for Hollis and Maguire. They bond over grief and slowly come into their own as the story progresses. This book is about grief. I didn’t cry pre say but I will admit that I had tears. I really don’t want to give too much away about the story but from the blurb to the cover. The plot to the characters I was engrossed with the whole story. I could sense the growing connection these two had, and loved it. They both deserved happiness. It kept me so hooked I read it in one sitting and can’t wait for the next.
My main draw back is that this book was very internal dialogue heavy. It didn’t make for a bad story. But I really enjoy more characters driven story’s. I like to see the banter, them connect, just them talking and expressing things. I get why they were quite, there was a lot going on and they were stuck in their own heads but I hope the next book has a lot more dialogue. 4 stars #2OCCJD
Omg, this is the first book I have read by Leigh Lennon. And I loved it!! After tragedy strikes, Holland and Maguire, who are virtual strangers, are brought together from the death of Hollands husband who is also Maguires son. I like that it’s a slow burn instead of thrusting them together straight off the bat. I would highly recommend this book and cannot wait for the conclusion of this taboo love story.
i’m not use to crying so much reading a book, but what Leigh did with book is perfect. All grammar was on point. I can’t wait to read the next. I did win this book to read. My eyes kept tearing up. So grab a tissue before reading. Thank you so much
So emotional right from the beginning, this book has all the feels and angsts. I can’t imagine what 21 year old Holland is going through when her husband is killed in action. With no place to go, she takes up her father in law Maguire’s help. This taboo slow burn story was a page turner. I took a half star off because the taboo matter was a bit too taboo for me. With that being said, I do look forward to the second part of this duet. I do enjoy Ms. Lennon’s books.
I really enjoyed this book. The emotions at the beginning of the book gutted me. I can’t imagine going through losing a son and husband like Maguire and Holland did. I was not prepared for the ending. Can’t wait to see what happens next for these two.
Boy I did not know what to expect going into this book but things are heating up!
I was skeptical initially, the whole take care of my woman thing to his best friend? Yea, I’d be cool with that but to insinuate the father in law and daughter in law might hook up? That gave me pause.
But thankfully I bit the bullet an jumped in, I would have missed a great book had I passed on this one.
The ending left me wanting to scream.
Seriously, could I just have both books back to back!!
I’m not telling you a thing about this book, you really need to experience it but it is amazing, it’s got a few surprises, angst, tension out the ying yang and a metric ton of heat.
I’m so happy book 2 hit my kindle, I’m going to get the rest of their story and cross my fingers it goes they way I hope it will.
This is my second book by Leigh Lennon an boy did she up the game with it! I’m hooked, I’m a fan and I’m probably going to fall asleep at work tomorrow because I have to read the second book tonight!
Leigh Lennon is one of my favorite authors, and Like Father Like Son, proves that once again, that she will always be one of my 1 Click Authors. When i saw that this book was a Forbidden/Age Gap Romance ( my favorite Trope) I knew we were going to be in for a treat! Holland and Maguire are one of my all time favorite Romance book couples. Leigh starts the book off with a bang, tugging at your tears and heartstrings when talking about the tragedy of loosing Scott, a beloved Husband and Son. The pain and anguish that Maguire and Holland feel is palpable through the pages and makes your heart hurt with the characters. But Leigh does not dwell on the tragedy. She uses that for growth for the Characters. Holland is so strong, Maguire is as well. They learn to lean on each other, and remember the good times and memories they each have of Scott. Without the comfort of each other, they would not get through Scott’s death. There are so many tender and sexy scenes between Holland and Maguire. I cant get enough! I love how protective and caring Maquire is for Holland. Holland is amazing. She may be young, but she is strong and fierce!! Towards the end of the book, you think it is finally going in the right direction, and you are going to get the Happy ending that you want, then BAM. Leigh hits you with the mother of all cliff hangers and you are left wondering how you ended up in this life . I have not been able to read another book yet. I am so very anxiously waiting for the final book of the duet. This is going to be the most epic duet to date. WELL DONE Leigh! I can not wait for the next book.
Wow! This story was such an emotional page-turner!
As you can tell from the book synopsis, the heroine, Holland, is dealing with the tragic loss of her husband, Scott-who was killed in action while serving in the military. She’s never really had a serious connection to her own family, so her husband took liberties to ensure she would be provided for even in the event of his death. They planned on starting a family together and she had big dreams they were going to conquer together before he passed.
This story takes you on an emotional journey of her dealing with the loss of her first love, while also getting used to the idea of having Scott’s family and friends, particularly her father-in-law Maguire, around to help her during her adjustment period in the wake of her husband’s loss. Maguire is coming to terms with the loss of his son and it’s just as heartbreaking for him to endure as it is for Holland. Due to issues between Maguire and his late ex, Christine, Scott’s mother, he felt guilt over not being as present as he wish he could have been, and throughout the story we are reminded of this with brief references to past memories of them together.
This leaves both Holland and Maguire to confront their losses head on, together, as he has promised he would honor his son’s memory by caring for her in the wake of his loss and taking her back home to California with him. There’s road trips, hotel overnighters, an absolutely lovable furry dog, steamy moments, a lakefront property, an overprotective, possessive older man who will do anything to protect her, and lots of pining and swoony scenes along with the shedding of tears and surprise moments. This is a slow burn romance of forbidden-“can’t ever happen” sort of love and it has plenty of angsty moments as well as steamy moments packed in this story to keep you turning the pages in anticipation. It’s one of those stories that you read and you really feel it down in your bones for both of these main characters. I enjoyed this story very much…..I cried and I smiled a lot while reading. It had all the feels I was looking for in a romance story like this one. It also has some surprise moments and the plot then dives into those angles of the story as well, which move the story in a different direction which I enjoyed and will not spoil here.
It does have a cliffhanger ending, which left me speechless and I’m anxiously awaiting the next installment, to continue on this journey alongside these characters. I only deducted one star because at times, the heroine’s choice of lingo is a bit frustrating considering her age in the novel. However, in all honesty, the heroine is written in a way to excuse this little quirk. Aside from that, I really loved this story and can’t wait to see how much these characters mature and come together over the course of the next book!
Sarge+Darlin’ are absolutely great together and their chemistry is angsty and passionate 🙂
This author is completely new to me and I’ll definitely be seeking out more of her stories in the future <3
This story really hits you hard and makes you question a lot. I am in love with this story and concept. It is something raw and unique that I found I had to devour. This is a way out there taboo story. It isn’t really a horrible taboo but something you would never expect to see happen. But that pull that Holland and Maguire have is sizzling. How the slow burn sizzles through this story makes my head spin. This story is one of heart break and finding ones footing in life again. Holland is such a fighter. I love her sass and how she doesn’t back down even after everything from her past to her present being jumbled. Maguire is a sin on a stick alpha who you just want for yourself. How these two fight their chemistry is insane. As we flow through this story, you cannot help but root for something that shouldn’t be happening!
All I can say is that I NEED PART TWO! Yes this is a duet, so you are left with your mouth dropped to the floor and begging for more! I am so involved with finding out how this all plays out! I need answers and I need Maguire. I think I have found my new book boyfriend! So snag this up to wait for part two which comes soon!
This is the first book I’ve read from Leigh Lennon and I was completely intrigued about this book from reading the blurb. Going into the book I had an idea in my mind where this was going, but this story was nothing like I expected it to be.
Holland just lost her husband. She is losing her home. Her family is far from supportive. Her deceased husband knew this, so he asked the only man he would trust with the one person he loved more than anything, his father. Maguire didn’t get a ton of time with his son, but he cherished his time with him and would do anything for him, including honoring his son’s dying wish.
This is a SLOW SLOW SLOW burn. There is no denying the chemistry between Holland and Maguire, but they both know it isn’t right. She just recently lost her husband and him his son. They learn on each other for love and support and to just cope with the changes and the loss.
This story was emotional rollercoaster full of love, loss and getting a second chance.
Like Father Like Son is the first book in a duet and it ends on a MASSIVE CLIFFHANGER! I need book two ASAP!!!!!!
I absolutely loved reading this book!! Even though this book had me crying at parts, there were also many times that I did laugh out loud.
Holland had this wit about her that I really enjoyed. Even though she went through a tragedy at a young age she knew that she be able to get through it.
Maguire also went through the same tragedy that Holland went through. He is coping with it and Holland is helping with that. Driving her 3000 miles across the country brings them closer but how close is to close?
I will say that the ending of this book had my jaw hitting the floor!! I can’t wait for book two to find out what happens!!
Devastatingly poignant, tension-filled, heart breaking, and hopeful, all at once.
This story was one I was hesitant to read but am going glad I did!!
Holland and Maguire are figuring out how to navigate the waters after Scott dies. Scott has asked one last thing if his father…to watch over Holland.
This is a different twist on that but one that grows as the story unfolds. It may not be what either one of them want or feels is right but the heart knows what it needs.
And the ending!!! I can’t wait to read the next book!!!
