Eggie Ray Smith may be a wolf and a killer, but he’s one of the good guys in this sizzling novella by NewYork Times bestselling author Shelly Laurenston . . . LIKE A WOLF WITH A BONE Quiet little Darla Lewis doesn’t know what to think when the most-feared member of the South’s rowdiest wolf pack kidnaps her. Does he want to protect her or kill her? It could be either! Everyone knows about Egbert … to protect her or kill her? It could be either! Everyone knows about Egbert Ray Smith and how dangerous he is. Every pack avoids him, and the U.S. military uses him as their own killing machine. And Darla is just a nice girl who likes to bake and occasionally follow the Grateful Dead around. She doesn’t have time for this sort of foolishness. And yet . . . there is something about Eggie Ray. He just doesn’t seem as bad as everyone says. In fact, the more she gets to know him, the cuddlier he seems.
Something her overprotective family is not going to be happy to hear . . .

““You can take me wherever you want to, Egbert Ray Smith, because I know that I’ll never be safer than I am right now . . . with you.” And she said the words with such sincerity, her dark brown eyes so trusting of him when even his own kin never looked at him that way, that Eggie knew in that moment that he’d never let anyone harm this She-wolf. Never let anyone come near her without her consent. He’d protect Darla Mae Smith with his life. – 12% Like a Wolf with a Bone”
I read this when it first was published in the Box Set Howl For It. I’m glad the author published this on it’s own, so I can add it to my collection of the Pride series. Now if only we can get an audio for this novella. ^_^
Like a Wolf with a Bone features Dee-Ann Smith’s, who we meet in Big Bad Beast, parents Egbert (Eggie) Ray Smith and Darla Mae.
Shelly Laurenston is one of my favorite authors. I love re-visiting her books either to read or listen too. Her books have a fabulous blend of crazy humor and energy.
This was a great read; especially for a fan. Darla and Egbert make a great couple. I enjoyed see the beginning and getting a glimpses into the Aunts and Uncles of the Smith Pack.
Like a Wolf with a Bone made for a nice fun read. I loved it!
Rated: 5 Stars
I have no idea how I missed this novella in the anthology it was in, and I’m so glad I saw it this time. I LOVE Shelly’s writing, and this novella is no exception. It’s funny and sexy, and there’s a definite sweetness to the deadly characters that’s just awesome. This really is a great read!
Shelly Laurenston certainly has a unique author voice. I first read her honey badger books, and then Like a Wolf with a Bone. Her shapeshifters are so unique and entertaining. This book was pure enjoyment.
One of my favorite stories by Shelly Laurenston. I’ve re-read it several times since it was first released. I love Eggie and Darla Mae so hard.
Note: this is a re-release. The story was originally in the anthology “Howl for It”, released in 2011.
The author goes to extremes with this opposites-attract story. I’ve curious about Dee-Ann Smith’s daddy and mommy – getting the chance to see them when they first meet is quite the treat. Eggie Ray the younger matches what I expected from meeting Eggie Ray the elder. Miss Darla’s youth on the other hand is surprising in light of her southern lady daintiness, but there had to be good reason for the Smith pack to accept her so fully. The epilogue to this novella was even more enjoyable – seeing Eggie and Darla as in-laws is … interesting (in the Chinese sense).
Eggie and Darla’s story!
Egbert Ray (Eggie) Smith had one job in the Marines and that was taking care of other shifters but when he is told (forced) to go on leave he meets Darla Lewis. Darla is pacifist but seems to be the only shifter isn’t scared of him.
Dee-Ann Smith’s parents and you recognize many parents of The Pride Series.
4 stars – It was really good
I really loved Darla and Eggie’s story. Egbert “Eggie” Smith is known as a killer and most people avoid him, but not Darla. She sees the sweet and protective man and is determined to make others see it too. I loved how Darla was extremely kind, caring and sassy, but also would attack anyone who said anything disrespectful about Eggie. She was the perfect mate for Eggie. This was a great start to this crazy world of shifters.
I love the stories that this author has been writing and it was finally great to her about the parents.
I loved this novella. It gives the backstory on Eggie, the most feared Smith wolf of all & his Darla. An other LOL hit from Laurenston.
Shelly Laurenston books are always such great fun and this one is no exception. Eggie and Darla Mae Smith‘s story is absolutely charming. Or blood-thirstilly brilliant! … They are wolf shifters after all!
Sweet and sexy with lots of heart and humor. I definitely recommend it!
Shelly Laurenston is a must read for any paranormal romance lovers.
I have never read a book of Shelly’s that didn’t have me laughing out loud and smiling. She writes a wonderful story that hooks you from the first page to the last. Definitely a must read author!
Entertaining and fun to read. I love the characters and their interaction with family. Lots of chuckles and great reading.
Fantastic
Egbert Ray Smith is home from the US military for a couple of weeks thinking about when he can leave again and avoiding the drama his brothers seem to find themselves in. Darla Lewis is home for a bit and wondering how she can avoid the drama he sisters find themselves in when she finds herself meeting Eggie Smith. Eggie has a reputation of being scary intense and dangerous but to Darla she thinks he is sweet. One thing leads to another and Eggie is protecting and trying his best to woo Darla who is mutually smitten but what happens when family interferes?
Loved this, I cannot believe I had not read this before. Eggie is exactly what I expected. Darla is so free spirited it is completely opposite of Eggie but together they are perfect. Another brilliant read from one of my all time favorite authors.
I LOVED Eggie’s story!! This has been one of my favorite of the whole pack. His daughter’s story is good but Eggie and Darla is one of my favorites.
