This is a heartwarming story with loveable characters and a affectionate and heroic pet. I loved all of the wonderful characters in this book. They pull you in and make you want to be part of their story. Add in the realistic storyline and this book is a must read. I would definitely recommend this book.
Another delightful addition to the Baker City Brides series! If you’re looking for a humorous adventure, this is your story. Our couple, Delilah Robbins, who has arrived with her father for his new job as the town’s meteorologist, and Deputy Dugan Durfey, both have you laughing as individuals and on their journey to becoming one. Dugan has to constantly try to hide his amusement at finding Delilah in one hilarious predicament after another, while Delilah is totally clueless as she excitedly shares her adventures with him. The storytelling style of Ms. Hatfield is delightful for the people of the time period and will have you smiling at the language she uses to portray her characters as well as falling in love with them at the small acts of kindness and respect they show for each other. Don’t miss finding out how Delilah and Dugan’s story ends!
I received a free Kindle copy of this book. I volunteered to read it and write a review.
Mr. Robbins and his daughter move across country for his new job. Delilah is convinced a man would demand her to give up her indepence and be dutiful and obedient. Two of the deputies in her new town vie for her attention. Will she recognize and accept love when she finds it?
This authors books take you on a wild emotional ride. Highly recommend!
I received an arc of this book. My opinions are my own.
If the title and cover does not bring a smile to your face, this delightful story surely will. From the first page to the last, you will find humor, sweet moments and two handsome lawmen vying for the affections of one Delilah Robbins. Moving with her meteorologist father to Baker City, Delilah is happy to see the town is really booming. When they find the house they are renting in shambles, Deputy Dugan Durfey comes out to investigate. When he and Delilah meet, it is really almost an instant attraction. But he is not the only one feeling that attraction. Dugan’s best friend and fellow deputy Seth, is very attracted to her also and tries to court her too.
This story was so much fun and with the introduction of a wily raccoon named Oliver, it gets even better. I love when animals are put into stories.
But all is not rosy as some unexplained things start happening around town and at the mines. People are getting hurt and there is a mystery to be solved.
I have not read the other books in this series but I intend to go back because of how much I enjoyed this story. I was left with a heartsmile and know you will enjoy it to!
Delilah Robbins agrees to go with her father to his new post in Baker City, Oregon as the new Meteorologist. She was expecting the town to be primitive, but to her delight the town was booming.
As they make their way to the home they are supposed to move in they see just how bad the old tenant kept the place or was it robbed?
Deputy Dugan Durfey walks up to see who the pretty lady is sitting on the porch. Once they meet each other they can’t keep their eyes off each other. But what happens when his best friend an other deputy Seth, comes into the picture. Neither one of them can keep their eyes off Delilah.
I enjoyed reading about Delilah and Dugan. They work well with each other and all the secondary characters make this heartwarming read phenomenal. We can’t forget the raccoon Oliver. He is hilarious to read about.
I have not read the other books in the series but there is enough information on the other couples in the book. The reader will not feel like they are laking any information. It will however make you want to read the other books.
Lightning and Lawmen by Shanna Hatfield
My rating is 4.5 Stars
Delilah’s charm didn’t leave only the deputies falling over themselves to be around her, but attracted even Oliver, the raccoon. After a less than favorable first meeting, she and the little critter declared a truce and even became fast friends. Author Shanna Hatfield did such a great job of including him into the story, not only using an adorable raccoon graphic at the head of each chapter (if you look closely, the raccoon there is made up of flowers – brilliant!), but including Ollie in the text of each chapter as well, allowing him to play a prominent part in this delightful book.
As with many of the author’s heroine’s, Delilah is strong, independent, resourceful, and intelligent. As the daughter of a scientist, she had an inquisitive mind. I enjoyed the way she didn’t let anything deter her from seeking out the birds she was so fond of, including putting on trousers and climbing trees.
Dugan was an interesting man. For some reason, he felt it necessary to hide his intelligence, though not from Delilah. He was head over heels about her but didn’t have the confidence to pursue her, especially when his best friend, Seth, squired her around town. The scene at the dance and the ensuing events were great! The very strong attraction between Delilah and Dugan resulted in some swoony kisses, yet they remained clean and appropriate. It was evident that the pull is not merely physical.
I love the way author Shanna Hatfield managed to impart so much information about meteorology, birds, and other things relevant to the time period into Lightning and Lawmen and yet doesn’t make it sound like she is simply spouting off facts. Each piece of knowledge is wrapped into the story in such a way that it is very natural and just fits.
Included with the romance were a murder and a mystery. Someone was breaking into the weather station and also into Delilah’s house, but why? The way that was resolved was interesting and the rescue was so much fun.
The Baker City Brides (and their husbands) from previous books of the series all play prominent roles in this one, which allowed me to catch up on how they are all doing. The details included from the past were just enough to not make the reader feel lost if they had not read the others and not so many to make those who have read them feel like their story was being rehashed in this one.

I would like to thank Shanna Hatfield for giving me this copy of the book. This gift did not influence my opinion or review.
Cowboys and miners and hunky deputies, two of which seem to be fighting over the same girl when they are not best friends. Outlaws and call girls and a threat of a rabies outbreak!
A wonderful cast of townsfolk who, if not related by blood, seem to have come together as a family by marriage and friendship.
This is Delilah’s story: a well bred and educated woman who travels from the civilized east to the wild west in support of her father’s career. Already twenty six years old, she has no dreams of being saddled and tamed by marriage. She is quite capable of earning her own living and taking care of herself…in most instances.
The book is charming and has a dreamy romantic quality. It stresses friendship and presents strong female characters. Full of delightful, sometimes surprising, information. It is a beautiful portrait of the times in which it is set.
While it can be enjoyed as a stand alone, I encourage you to read the other books in this series and get to know all of the wonderful characters and their stories as well.
I accepted this book to review as I have loved other books by this talented author. The rating, review and enjoyment are my own.
From the first word to the last, I loved every minute of reading this book! The characters came alive and I was completely invested in the story. Delilah had a beautiful elegance about her. She was genuine and comfortable with herself. Dugan was strong and confident and had such a good heart. I loved the way he was always there for Delilah. At times, in quite humorous situations. This book definitely made me laugh! And there was true swoon-worthy romance. Sigh…those kisses! I loved the storyline and the writing. I just loved it all!
I love this whole series! Baker City is filled with wonderful characters and I loved getting to see them again. This is the fifth book in the series, but does stand-alone. The whole series is definitely worth reading, though!
I received a complimentary copy of the book, which I voluntarily reviewed. I have given my honest opinion.
This is such a fun story, it has everything you are looking for. One sweet independent sassy girl, two best friends fighting for her attention, and all the characters from the previous books in this series. And if that isn’t enough you mix the humorous antics from a special pet with some suspense and you have an really entertaining story.
I recommend this whole series, you won’t regret reading it.
I just loved the characters in this story. Delilah Robbins is a headstrong, kindhearted person. Dugan Durfey is just as headstrong, kindhearted and hardworking deputy. When Dugan meets Delilah he is immediately taken with her. You’ll fall in love with all the characters of this Baker City Brides book, including the furry bandit named Oliver! A wonderfully unique romance story set in the early west!
Wow, Shanna Hatfield has done it once again and this one I laughed so hard at one point and almost cried at others but laughter was a highlight for me.
Out of all the Baker City Brides series this is my favorite. I loved the characters; the hero and heroine are perfect and the story has so much that you never know what is coming next.
Have you ever read about a Racoon as a hero? Okay he is one of true real heroes in this story. Oliver is his name and our heroine trained him to be a pet and not hurt her birds or their eggs in her beautiful garden she cultivated just for her birds, mostly.
When our heroine came to town with her father as he took the meteorologist job and both deputies decided to try to court her. One did just that but the other made her heart flutter.
How does she choose and how does Oliver save her life plus the deputy she fell in love with?
Well you have to read this fun and often fast-moving story. Besides fast moving the adventures are often and not always good.
This is definitely a wonderful and fun story to read and you won’t regret it.
But if you haven’t read the other books in this series to get to know the other characters in this series and you will find a lot of independent women for the era they are in. Late 1800’s is a good time to be reading about.
I did receive this wonderful story from the author but was not in anyway compensated for this review or even asked to write one but it is so good and a story I absolutely loved that I wanted to give this review.
this is another great story by the author, I love the racoon who would have thought to pet it. I was given a copy of the book but this is an honest review. I loved to see the past people in the story, if you have read any of the other books you have to read this one, I could not put the book down. it will have you laughing, and wooing at the baby . he is strong and she is a formidable women. looking forward to the next book
I adored this book!!
It’s a heartwarming, fun & intriguing story. Delilah Robbins accompanied her father
Ross, to Baker City. He is the new meteorologist for the area. She is quite taken with the town. The first person she meets is Deputy Dugan Durfey. Delilah first notices the silver badge & then the most amazing blue eyes with the longest lashes. Seth Harter is another deputy that works with Dugan.
He’s just as enchanted with Delilah as Dugan.
Delilah, her father & neighbors worked very hard to make their cottage a home, after being destroyed by previous meteorologist. Strange things keep happening around town & at the mines. People are being hurt. No one can figure out what’s going on or what they’re after.
Delilah & Seth have gone on dates,
while she & Dugan have become good friends.
If only Delilah & Dugan could finally
admit how they feel. It was great to
catch up with the neighbors of Baker City.
I enjoyed this story so much, I could
not put it down.
A MUST READ FOR EVERYONE!!!
