Betty Dawsey knows that breaking things off with Thom Lange is for the best. He’s nice, but boring, and their relationship has lost its spark. But steady and predictable Thom, suddenly doesn’t seem so steady and predictable when their condo explodes and she’s kidnapped by a couple of crazies claiming that Thom isn’t who he says he is. Thom is having a hellish week. Not only is he hunting a double … hunting a double agent, but his fiancé dumped him, and thanks to his undercover life, she’s been kidnapped.
Turns out Thom is Operative Thom and he’s got more than a few secrets to share with Betty if he’s going to keep her alive. With both their lives on the line, their lackluster connection is suddenly replaced by an intense one. But in his line of work, feelings aren’t wanted or desired. Because feelings can be a lethal distraction.

Amazing read!! Lies by Kylie Scott is a tremendous romantic suspense. I completely fell in love with Thom and Betty. The bounced so well off each other that they had me captivated from the get go. This book was so surprising. The main theme is a romantic suspense but the comedic elements in the story I feel really lifts the book and keeps it from getting too serious. This book is the perfect balance and you cannot help but want to read more.
Betty is a fantastic heroine. She is so strong willed, she has had to be. Being a larger sized girl, she has had to deal with her fair share of men just phoning it in when it comes to being with her. When she met Thom there where no sparks flying but he seemed like a nice guy who could fill the spot of her partner nicely. However after a year together Betty has become tired of being ignored by Thom and our story picks up with Betty packing up her things and in the process of leaving her fiance. Her world is literally rocked beneath her feet and the events that follow take Betty’s simple uncomplicated life and turn it on it’s head.
Thom is not who he appears to be and has been leading a double life. Betty is the only bright light in his dark world. So when he discovers Betty was in the process of leaving him, he is actually deeply hurt. Thom has never been very good at expressing his emotions and this leads to alot of misunderstanding between himself and Betty. What Betty has now uncovered about Thom sheds a whole new light on their relationships and leaves her extremely angry!! She is not going to let this lie, Thom better be prepared to face Betty’s wrath, this leads to some very funny encounters between the two as Thom flounders with how to deal with Betty. Unfortunately they are currently fighting for their lives in a deadly game of cat and mouse.
This story takes some surprising twists and turns that will keep you on your feet until the very end. It is a great read that will keep you enchanted to the very last word.
Kylie Scott brings us something new and different here in Lies. It’s an action packed romance. There is a little bit of suspense, but I don’t think I would classify it as a romantic suspense. The book starts out with a bang, literally. Betty is leaving her fiancé, Thom, because he’s so boring. She’s packing up their shared home and moving her stuff out while he’s out of town. While she’s carrying stuff out to the car, the entire condo blows up, and this is just the first chapter! It gets more action packed from there! While I did like Betty, I did struggle with Thom’s character a bit. His reasons for doing things were so absurd; I was just left completely baffled by his character. Other than that, I thought the book was well written, had a good pace and was a quick, fun, entertaining story. It would make a great movie that I would definitely pay to see.
* I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
I absolutely love suspenseful romance stories. I love it when a story doesn’t take a normal, conventional path and creates something unique, new and interesting. And that is exactly what Kylie Scott did in LIES. I was excited to read the blurb of this book and see that it was something a little different than what I usually read.
While I thought this story was humorous and filled to the brim with action, I did feel that the romance aspect was very slow-going for me. It felt almost awkward as I kept hoping to feel their connection. We were told that Thom had deep feelings for Betty but I never really saw it nor felt it until more than halfway through the story.
The side characters are great and add some humor, drama, and depth to the story. Some of the plot and events are definitely over the top and maybe a bit rushed, and there some niggling aspects especially towards the end that bothered me a little. All in all while this was a good story and full of action, adventure, witty banter and sarcastic retorts, it did fall somewhat flat for me on the romance scale. But it is overall an entertaining and fun read.
Woahhhhh! Kylie Scott sure surprised me with Lies! I’m huge into thrillers and Muss Scott had definitely combined some romance with that thriller/suspense feel. The writing if fantastic! Scott’s flow is perfect and natural… it’s feel like a story like that you just have to rush through. That is just what I did too! I couldn’t help myself.
I have to say, I’ve liked and enjoyed Kylie Scott’s books previously. However, Lies just elevated my enjoyment level up notches! This is definitely my favorite book that she has ever written. While I had that intense feeling the entire time, Scott also added a ton of fun and laughs. Betty and Thom are fantastic! I loved the secondary characters as well and would love to read more on them! Lies was really well-rounded and made for a delightful weekend read! You’ll be finished way before you want to be!
I received an ARC of this book with the hope that I would leave an Unbiased Opinion. I was not required to leave a review, positive or otherwise, and my opinions are just that… my opinions.

A roller coaster of suspense, humor and heat
“Okay, wow. I did NOT expect that.” Thus starts my first (and only) line of notes from reading Lies. See, I rarely bother reading blurbs for 1-click authors, and even when I do read them, by the time I actually get the book on my e-reader, I usually only have a hazy impression of what the book is about. So, when I saw it download (there might have been some impatient refreshing while I was waiting), I began reading without a clue as to what the book was about. Then bam! I hit that beginning. And from that first explosion to the last gunshot, the author took me on a roller coaster ride of a story that had me gasping and laughing, and far too busy turning pages to see what happens next to worry about anything so mundane as note taking.
With more wonderful characters from this author, I loved Betty and her sarcasm, and I’m pretty sure I want to be her when I grow up, lol. She’s shaken by the sudden violence in her world, and by the lies she’s been told, but she doesn’t let any of that stop her for long, and though she has her vulnerabilities, she really steps up and shows her strength in her new reality. I loved Thom, too; in spite of his occasional utter cluelessness when it comes to relationships, he’s protective and possessive of Betty, and determined to do what he has to in order to keep her safe. There are several other intriguing characters besides Betty and Thom, and I, for one, wouldn’t be adverse to more stories about the “zoo”.
This new standalone is full of the mix of humor and heat I’ve come to expect from this author, plus the addition of a large heaping of mystery and suspense with plenty of plot twists as Betty is introduced into the real Thom’s world, and gets to know the true version of the man she has been engaged to. One of my favorite reads from this author. 5+ stars

3.5/4 stars
Betty thought her life with Thom was flat and going no where, despite the engagement ring on her hand. But no sooner has she broken off their engagement when things go sideways. Her home is blown up, she is kidnapped, and quickly learns that there was more to her predictable, straightlaced fiance than she realized. Turns out Thom has a dangerous job and the threat has followed him home. Now they have to work together to find the mole and survive.
These two were an interesting pair. From being bored with their relationship to thrown into firefights and imminent danger, they had some work to do. But their chemistry development was good and as Thom’s secrets fell away, Betty was able to see the real man behind the plain facade. This is not a couple that I felt was deeply in love until we were well into the book. Because there had been so many lies in their original relationship, they were starting over in the midst of this incredibly stressed situation.
Thom grew on me quickly as his true personality came out. He is protective, quick on his feet, and level headed. He may have been pretending to be lukewarm in their relationship, but he was harboring true feelings underneath the chill. He also had to learn how to “relationship” as he was really bad at showing his feelings. Betty had an interesting arc, and her sass has her adapting to each new situation she finds herself.
This was a fast moving story with many twists and turns. Some of the plot points did feel a little rushed and over the top, but it was an enjoyable story regardless. The side characters are an interesting group, from the ones Thom knew he could trust, to those who popped up as unreliable, and the uncertainty had me questioning everyone’s motives and kept the pages turning.
This book wrecked me. And I freaking loved every. Single. Second of it. Days after reading this book and I still can’t put into words what I feel. I absolutely loved it, I can definitely tell you that! It’s been a while since I was completely consumed by a book. Lies not only consumed me, it left me with one hell of a book hangover.
I was so intrigued with this story-line. I can say, I don’t think I’ve personally read anything like it. It was witty, action packed and sexy as all hell. Poor Betty. This girl was batting zero on the amazing boyfriend front and I think she just gave up and decided to settle. Thom was safe and nice and safe, did I mention safe. They led somewhat boring lives but it was okay since she had someone to come home to every night, right? Until she wakes the heck up and realizes that sometimes it’s better to be alone than with someone and lonely. The day that Betty decides to leave her fiance is the day her life as she knows it changes.
Exploding condos, lies and spies oh my! Thom is in deep shiz with Betty now. I loved that there was a natural progression to this book. Thom mess up and did it epicly. Betty is not forgiving him anytime soon and he has to prove to her, even with them running for their lives, that she was not just a cover for him. He genuinely loves her and wants to win her back. This book was full of hilarity, action and tears. So many tears.
I highly recommend you get this book right now!
I have been a huge Kylie Scott fan since her Stage Dive series and am always ready for more of her amazing stories. When I read the blurb for Lies I was intrigued as it seemed as if it was part comedy, part action and suspense. For that reason I was very excited to read Thom and Betty’s story!
After finding out that her unassuming and tepid fiance was playing a part and was really a dangerous secret operative, Betty must figure out if she really knows the man who she has been with for over a year. But with secrets between them and criminals out to kill them, Thom and Betty embark on a mission together (for once), where they need to determine not only who is after them but if they are meant to be together after all.
All in all while this was a good story and full of action, adventure and witty/sarcastic retorts from Betty, it did fall somewhat flat for me on the romance scale. 4 stars! ~Ratula
WOW! When I first read the blurb to Lies, I was immediately intrigued and knew I HAD TO HAVE IT. It is a delicious blend of humor, heat, action and suspense. Lies takes you on an intense journey that will keep you guessing, and sate your craving for mind-blowing twists. This unconventional romance was superbly written and pulled me in from the very beginning. It is one of those books that you will need to clear your schedule for because once you start, you won’t be able to stop. This all-consuming story takes you on a wild and crazy ride, so hold on to your hats folks.
Betty Dawsy has decided that leaving her fiancé is simply for the best. Thom Lange is nice and safe, but boring, and the relationship has run its course. After walking out the front door, their condo suddenly explodes, and she is kidnapped by a couple of goons. Come to find out, Thom is not who he claimed to be. He was simply playing a part, and is really a deep cover operative. With criminals hot on their trail, they set out on a mission to discover who is out to get them. While on the run and fighting for their lives, the spark between them reignites. But will they be able to take down the killers and finally get their happy ending?
I wasn’t sure what to expect with Lies, but I can tell you that the author blew my expectations out of the water. This story was masterfully crafted and filled to the brim with everything that I love. I was immediately hooked, and felt as if I were part of this dangerous fictional world. If you love romance and suspense, then trust me. YOU WANT TO READ THIS BOOK. It’s sure to be a hit as I know it was with me. So what are you waiting for? Go grab a copy now!
4.5 Stars!
Betty Dawsey is a florist in California who has been with her fiance Thom Lange for a little over a year when she decides things just aren’t going to work out. They’ve lost their spark, and everything between them has become predictable and routine. She was tired of feeling like an after thought. He was always busy or away for work, and she was lonely. She wants someone who puts her first and makes her a priority. She needs to end things before they get too complicated, and plans on breaking up with him, but then her whole world is suddenly turned upside down when their condo explodes, and she’s kidnapped.
Turns out she doesn’t really know the man she was going to marry as well as she thought she did. Boring Thom who was just your average guy is actually an operative with a secret life. Now she wonders if she ever really knew him at all. This stranger is nothing like her Thom. He’s confident, possessive, overprotective, and intense. She’s angry and feels betrayed, and doesn’t know what’s real anymore. He’s messing with her emotions, and suddenly they have off the charts chemistry as they encounter one disaster after another. She’s been dragged into his drama, and now has to rely on him as they are trying to stay alive while figuring out who wants them dead. While on the run together will they be able to explore their new connection and sort out their complicated relationship, or is it truly over between them?
Lies by Kylie Scott is a sexy standalone full of mystery, action, danger, secrets, lies, excitement, and humor. I really enjoyed this story as this couple embraces their new reality and truly get to know one another for the first time. I adored Betty and how she shows what she’s made of when it counts. She was absolutely hilarious. This book had plenty of heart, heat, laughs and emotion. Just loved it!
Man, Betty’s having a no good, very bad day . . . she’s finally decided she needs and deserves more out of her sad, pathetic relationship with Thom, and the day she’s broken things off and moving out, the condo they shared blows up.
Thom’s having a pretty crappy day too. He’s an operative—a deadly one—there’s a traitor on his team out to kill him and his fiancée has been kidnapped . . . by his supposed friends. And in order to keep her safe and flush out the bad guy, Thom needs to keep Betty by his side. And reveal the “real” Thom to her too.
Lies are exposed and the truth, or at least a more truthful version, is revealed. But can Betty really trust Thom—put her life in his hands and his fellow operatives?
I have to admit, I really loved this book. I loved how the story unfolded—how the real Thom was exposed, and how Betty and Thom truly fell in love.
Lies is a quick, fun read—one that was of course sexy AF, but also fast-paced, sassy and very different from what I’ve been reading of late. ~ 4.5 stars
Betty is done with Thom, or should I say the Thom that she knows. Their relationship was enough before but now she knows she wants and deserves more. Unfortunately other people come into play and rock Betty’s world.
There’s so much she didn’t know about Thom because he only showed her what he wanted to see. What he thought she wanted and would be happy with. With all the new things going on, the car chases, the double agents, bullets flying that Betty actually gets to see who Thom really is.
Will he be able to show her that he’s all in, the old Thom and the new Thom is exactly what she wants and needs in her life. Will the new Thom be able to change her mind about leaving?
This book was so funny in places, the chemistry was awesome once Thom dropped the average Thom and Betty was definitely looking at him differently but would it be enough?
Betty has decided she can’t be in relationship with her fiancé Thom anymore. She is putting boxes in car when her whole world changes. Everything is not as it seems but how will Betty handle it? Is Thom everything she thinks he is? Will she leave him?
So addictive! I was abducted by this book and it wouldn’t let me go 😀
I only try a new author when the plot obliterates all caution. And this plot, wow, it gripped me right away. Imagine this curvy woman who is fed up with her boring fiancé because he doesn’t seem to care for her.
Out of the blue, her world is literally blown to pieces, and she’s rescued by this Bond-style secret agent who used to be that boring fiancé. Bam! She’s in the middle of a life-or-death conspiracy trying desperately to stay alive while murder, bullets and secrets harass her within an inch of her sanity.
I loved the fun and fast pace. The heroine is understandably shaken, but she takes all the hassle in stride and uses her brain to stay on top of the craziness. She’s also mad at this new man she thought she knew. I think the contrast between the old Thom and this new, streamlined, deadly version of him is achieved pretty well by the author. Many things that didn’t work between them have a fun and twisted explanation that add a light-hearted vibe to the espionage and action.
Is there romance and hot times? Oh, yeah. The chemistry starts to sizzle and burn in delicious ways! And when it explodes, it’s bliss.
There’s not a moment of dullness. It’s a constant rollercoaster of high emotions and risks, peppered with explosions and flying bullets and sophisticated espionage.
Even with the witty banter and the glass-shattering action, there’s drama too. It really blew my mind and left me breathless for a while. Until a new plot twist blew my mind the hardest the second time, and the story got to a crazy, fantastic ending that I’m still laughing about.
This is the most thrilling rom-com I’ve ever encountered.
Darling, I’d read anything Kylie Scott writes. She gives me what I need every single time.
My heart beats faster when I discover a new book of hers is going to be released soon. So, of course, I did my best to grab this one in advance.
I’m impatient when it comes to certain authors and their upcoming books and Kylie Scott is added to that list.
Lies gave me everything I needed to fall in love with her even more. A way to once again prove why I adore her words so much.
If you aren’t familiar with Kylie Scott, now is the time to get to know her. She’ll up your reading game for good and for the better.
Now, this is the first time I’ve read a book like this from her. A book filled with danger and double agents. I got introduced to Kylie Scott with her Stage Dive series. A set of stories all about rockstars. So, this one felt like something completely new and interesting. I was fascinated by the blurb and the urge to read this one right away was huge.
And I screamed when it hit my kindle. I devoured it in one sitting because I couldn’t put it down.
Her storyline was once again unique in every sense of the world. it held mystery, angst, a sparkle of danger and of course the thing we all get practically high on which is love. It was well developed and entertaining. There’s never a dull moment when you are reading Lies. It keeps you on the tip of your toes and you can’t help but read chapter after chapter. It demands to be read in one sitting.
The story centers around Betty Dawsey, a woman that works in a florist shop and knows what she wants out of the relationship, but hers is nothing like the one she dreamed. Her fiance, Thom Lange was rather boring, worked all the time and the sex was just horrible. Passion was missing and Betty had enough. And when tries to leave her soon to be husband fate had another plan for her.
Her condo gets blown up and that is the start of the road filled with danger and the truth around her fiance. Betty finds herself kidnapped by a bunch of strangers that have ties to Thom. Her Thom that ends up being so different from the one she dated before. A man skilled in the art of killing and deception. Strong, protective, and smart, but the new Thom all, but lied to Betty.
“Obviously, you’ve got your Boy Scout badge for lying and manipulating.”
And while Betty ends up struggling with the new Thom another danger is knocking on their doors. Deaths kept on filling the chapters of this book. A problem that doesn’t have a face yet nor a cause is the mystery that this book offers to the reader. You get to follow the path of the two while they try to survive, take down the bad guy and fall in love again.
“I wasn’t lying when I said I love you.”
Kylie Scott combines all these elements into her book and it works fantastically. I loved reading about the two main characters getting to know each other once again. Well, mostly Betty. And how their passion grew even amidst the danger surrounding their lives. They do have a lot of chemistry and that all because of Thom finally showing his true colors.
“Most of the time it feels like I’ve been at war my whole life damn life. But not with you. With you, even the fighting is fun. Touch me, Betty.”
Not the boring man this time, but the sexy, strong, dirty talking alpha. A man who can’t resist Betty. I can’t resist him. And damn did I love that. I swooned, I drooled and I fell in love with him. But most of all I adored the idea of two main characters ending up together. If they are able to survive of course.
Another strong aspect of this book is the development of the problem stating in the storyline. It’s well thought through. The author unravels layers by layers and slowly you get the whole picture which is how I love my books. I don’t want to know everything from the beginning on and Kylie Scott did perfectly. Just giving enough to spark the desire to keep on reading.
But there is something else I need to address here. Something that lifted my spirits while reading and that was the humor in this story. It isn’t all murders and danger, oh no. I laughed my ass off at certain times. Betty was a character that had these thoughts that just make me grin and I couldn’t help but love her for that.
Lies is a story that sucks you in from the beginning. A love story filled with danger, secrets and loveable characters. A pure treat for the romance lover. Kylie Scott delivers once again and I can only fall in love with her words even more. Words that capture me and sing to my soul just like Lies did.
This Romantic Suspense is really great! Betty and Thom’s story is suspenseful, action-packed, breathtaking, filled with danger, and hilarious scenes! Betty is feisty and hilarious! Thom, her supposed boring fiancé, is in fact an operative agent, resourceful, protective, and handsome. They share a sizzling chemistry. The ending is perfect. Somehow, this story reminded me the movie True Lies. I enjoyed reading this story, and I’m looking forward for more books written by Kylie Scott. If you like a laugh out loud story, with a lot of suspenseful scenes, you will love this one! I highly recommend it. I voluntarily reviewed it after receiving a free copy.
I absolutely loved this book – it was something different than what I’m used to from Kylie Scott.
It had intrigue and mystery, funny and steamy moments.I loved how Betty didn’t let the panic take over her and how she put her trust in Thom despite her head telling her not to.
It was so fun to see how he just didn’t seem to understand why she didn’t want anything to do with him when truths are reviled and his I’ll call them awkward attempts to fix what his lies did to them.
I’m hoping Kylie Scott out out more books like this – it was really refreshing to read and I can’t wait to see what she has in store for us next.

Betty’s not happy in her relationship with Thom, and decides to leave him, but quickly finds out that Thom wasn’t who he said he was. Betty quickly realises that everything was just a cover, and someone tried to kill them, she learns some of Thom’s job includes pretending to be someone he’s not and lying to people is part of his job.
While they have to travel to take Betty somewhere safe, she learns that Thom has never had a relationship before, he agrees that he was trained in seduction for carrying out things, and doesn’t know how he messed them up, and he’s still trying to work it out.
Thom wanted to try to have a normal life while doing his job, he never wanted Betty part of his other life, in danger and knowing who he was or trying to have a normal relationship with her knowing nearly everything.
Betty keeps focusing on the fact Thom lied to her, their whole relationship was a lie, but this new Thom knows how to handle himself and knows how to seduce her and she doesn’t want to admit she likes the new Thom.
Can he keep Betty safe, while trying to convince her that the feelings he has for her was never a lie.
Betty’s all set to leave her fiancé because he’s almost never around, doesn’t seem to really care, and she’s pretty sure that they don’t truly love each other. It’s just too bad she’s almost blown up while trying to move out! In the aftermath of that near-miss, she finds that her boring, bland fiancé is nothing more than a front for intense, totally smokin’ operative Thom’s real self. Of course, if his life with her was a lie, does that mean that his claims of love for her were, too? Betty’s almost afraid to try to muddle through the mess Thom has made, but when a man offers up unicorns, rainbows, and guns, it’s hard to just walk way. They just have to survive the people who want both real and fake Thom and very much real Betty to become dead (of the very dead variety).
I absolutely loved this book and the turns it took. I was chewed up, spit out, and then put back together when Betty decides to fight for what she KNOWS in her heart must be true. Maybe we’ll get lucky and see happy endings for the rest of the zoo also? I can always hope.
