Betty Dawsey knows that breaking things off with Thom Lange is for the best. He’s nice, but boring, and their relationship has lost its spark. But steady and predictable Thom, suddenly doesn’t seem so steady and predictable when their condo explodes and she’s kidnapped by a couple of crazies claiming that Thom isn’t who he says he is. Thom is having a hellish week. Not only is he hunting a double … hunting a double agent, but his fiancé dumped him, and thanks to his undercover life, she’s been kidnapped.
Turns out Thom is Operative Thom and he’s got more than a few secrets to share with Betty if he’s going to keep her alive. With both their lives on the line, their lackluster connection is suddenly replaced by an intense one. But in his line of work, feelings aren’t wanted or desired. Because feelings can be a lethal distraction.

This book is certainly a new thing for Kylie Scott, getting into a rom com with action and a bit of suspense had me reading it in one seat. Betty and Thom are not the ordinary couple you expect, their story starts with a bang and their lives are turn upside down. Thom isn’t the easy going boring guy she is used to, Betty will find herself trapped between the guy she thought she knew and the new version. I really liked the characters and would love to read more suspense from the author.
Betty believes her fiance isn’t remotely in love with her. He barely is present so she decides to leave him for good. Just as she is about to cement her decision, her life is altered for the worst. Now she her experienced a bomb explosion, kidnapping and espionage in its truest form.
Thom’s life took a turn for hell when his fiance found out his true job and dumped him. Now both of their lives are on the line because of a traitor in his organisation. The only options are to face the enemy or die. And Thom and no plans of letting anyone kill him or his fiance.
Betty is my role model and I want to be her when I grow up. She was sensible enough to know she was in a bad situation but badass enough to adapt to her circumstances. I would honestly let her ruin my life anyday. WHAT A QUEEN!
Thom was an adorable idiot/ murder daddy. I love the duality of his nature. He could kill in seconds but por man had no idea how to behave in front of his fiance. I was just so pumped to see that Betty was the one who made him all growly and neanderthalish when he is known for being stoic. Such a loveable fool, this one!
This book had my heart racing from chapter 1 and honestly I was at the edge of my seat the whole time. I was absolutely taken aback at about 80% of the book because I DID NOT see that coming. Though I figured out what really happened that was still one hell of a shock.

Betty Dawsey finds herself leaving her fiance only to have her whole entire world explode on her…literally. I always love a good romantic suspense and this one has it in spades. After finding out Thom is not who he said he was, Betty finds herself on an adventure of a lifetime. These two were just perfect together, and no matter how mad she wants to be at him, once he reveals his true self, she can’t help but fall in love all over again. Lies is such a fun and refreshing read. I devoured this book in one sitting. Kylie Scott has such a way with weaving her stories that keep you guessing and craving more.

In a different kind of romance, Kylie Scott manages to include espionage, killing, kidnapping, explosions, and all the other things associated with the spy world in a humorous romp. Oh, and some hot sexy scenes to keep your interest, too.
The characters are lovable in a under-cover sort of way. The plot is fast moving and hilarious in places. Overall the book, while it deviates from the typical romance, is well worth your time to read and love.
4.5 stars for – Lies – by Kylie Scott. This is a complete standalone with so much potential for more and if I’m being totally honest I am not above begging Kylie to keep writing about the other/supporting characters in this book. I rarely have the time or inclination to read a book from cover to cover in one day but that is exactly what happened with this story and I was captivated from the first few chapters all the way through to the end and wanted more long after the final words were read. I can’t recommend this story highly enough – do yourself a favor a pick up Lies as soon as you can!
Betty has decided her fiancé is not the man for her but while she is packing up her car to leave her plans literally blow up in her face. Betty is thrown head first into a world she never knew existed and quite frankly would rather not be a part of but the man she thought was boring and safe turns out to be keeping quite a few secrets. Getting kidnapped was not part of her plan and she can’t seem to wrap her head around all that she’s learned but she and Thom need to figure things out sooner rather than later if they’re going to make it out alive.
Lies by Kylie Scott Review
I loved this book!
Thom is one serious bada*s secret agent.I wanted to kick his as* some of the time. But he did redeem himself kinda sorta maybe.
Betty made me mad with her back & forth about loving Thom.
But she did turn into a bada*s in her own right.
I love that Kylie Scott doesn’t write skinny, perfect women as her heroin.
Kylie Scott’s phenomenal storytelling ability ALWAYS manages to wholeheartedly captivate me and this story was no exception! The moment I started reading this story, I couldn’t put it down and ended up devouring it in one sitting because everything from the characters to the storyline had me hook, line, and sinker!
Lies was totally unexpected and I instantly found myself falling in LOVE with Betty and Thom. These two certainly had me on the edge and I couldn’t help but find myself on the edge of my seat in anticipation for what was to come. The twists and turns kept me on my toes and there were a couple of nail-biter moments throughout. Just when I thought I had things all figured out, the author turned my entire world upside down and I didn’t think my heart was going to survive.
This story is a MUST READ and readers will absolutely love the unique approach the author takes!
I wasn’t exactly sure what to expect when I started this book but I was intrigued. It has been a while since I read a book by Kylie Scott and really enjoyed this one. This was a fun easy read that I couldn’t get enough of.
Betty has had enough and is ready to leave her fiancé Thom. Her best friend is helping her pack and leave. She feels its for the best and is ready to move on with her life. Thom job is one that is kept secret and once his cover is blown they go after him.
Betty is seeing a different side of Thom and isn’t sure what her feelings are. She is enjoying getting to know Thom and what he does for a living. I loved Thom and the two of them together.
This was an action packed romance that pulled me in. If you are looking for a something a little different and full of action this is for you.
This book was so rephreshing. It is so much fun to read. Kylie really did something unique with this one. It might just be that I don’t read a lot in this genre, but I really felt like I haven’t read any other book quite like this one and that was really nice.
If you are looking for an action packed romantic comedy, this is the book for you. It will have you laughing, and anticipating what craziness is going to happen next. This action starts from the first chapter and doesn’t let up.
It’s a very lighthearted, fun, action packed read.
It had me hooked from the start. I found myself laughing out loud at the humor. Betty was hilarious. I loved her and her antics.
One thing I’ve always loved about Kylie’s writing is how realistic it is, while still giving you that romantic fiction that we all want.
“Guess it isn’t until you know someone’s a liar that you know to really look. As he said, don’t trust your eyes. They can deceive you far too easil.”
Betty was my favorite, but I really enjoyed all of the crazy side characters, they make the story so much fun.
And of course we can’t forget our operative Thom, who is pretty bland in the beginning but when he does open up with Betty you grow to love him pretty quickly.
I love their interactions through the book as he’s learning how to open up and joke around, and Betty is just so sarcastic and sassy, I love it.
“We’re going to stay. We’re going to fight and we’re going to fix this.”
As always I love Kylie Scott’s writing. This one is different than the rest of her books in a good way. Definitely pick this one up and enjoy the action packed fun ride with Betty and Operative Thom!
WHOA! Talk about captivating read … this book could seriously be a movie! I was completely consumed by it and didn’t want to put it down. Betty thought she knew her fiance, but turns out, she had NO IDEA who he really is. Despite everything going on around them, she’s still attracted to this stranger. I liked the fact that they had to get to know each other again. Betty starts to understand where Thom was coming from and some of it makes her mad, while the rest just makes sense. This was a fast-paced, action-packed read and I couldn’t read it fast enough. I loved this book and the twists and turns it held! Be sure not to let this book pass you by!
There is just something about Kylie Scott’s books… her stories are original, her characters are memorable, and I always want to read them again. “Lies” is Kylie’s newest book. I’ve been waiting for its release FOREVER and she did not disappoint. From the very beginning of the story, I was hooked. Thanks for another great story, Kylie!
I totally fell in love with the cover of this book and after reading the blurb, it had me imagining such a hottie action super hero inside but unfortunately, Thom just didn’t quite live up to the expectations I had created of him in my head. I was hoping for John Wick and I got Johnny English instead. Betty on the other hand came across as a bit of a naive and whiney girl at the start of the story and I just didn’t like her character very much, but then after a while, suddenly her whole character’s personality just up and changed itself and she became a woman with some balls that I really admired.
The whole story is a mixed bag of lies and emotions that I felt is a little over done to death in the romantic suspense genre but having said that I did still like some of the story as the writing got better as the plotline moved along, it was a slow starter for me that was like a snowball rolling down a hill that builds up on size and speed and then BAM! it suddenly reached the bottom and explosion happens everywhere.
It’s not a bad story but it’s not the best story i’ve ever read by this author either. If you like a romcom with a bit of farcical drama thrown in, then this book is for you.
5+ Stars
Kylie Scott has hit one out of the park with Lies. The storyline grabs you from the first chapter, shakes you around and ties you to your chair (or your reading place of choice). Forget about functioning as a responsible adult until you have finished the last chapter, you’ll want to hide out and read what happens next with Betty and Thom.
There is plenty of sexual chemistry, banter and laughs between the leads, but this book doesn’t rely solely on its strong characters and romance to make it great. In fact, the love story often takes a backseat to the fast paced and action packed storyline of Lies.
Betty is not happy with her relationship with her fiance Thom. He isn’t giving her the spark, passion or emotional commitment she demands from the person she is set to marry. Deciding to pack up and leave, Betty soon discovers Thom is not who he says he is. She gets caught up pretty quickly, but trusting Thom and living in his real life is a mission she may not survive.
Thom and Betty are so good together. He oozes in confidence and sexiness with his profession but needs help from Betty on the relationship side of things. Betty has no idea how to behave in the world of spies, but she struggles through and holds it together most of the time! They work together and learn from each other, which was enjoyable to watch unfold.
I would love to see Lies turned into a movie or TV show, it would be a blockbuster! Lies gets 10 stars from me, but 5 is the highest the scale will allow me to give.
I really enjoyed lies by Kylie Scott she is a author I love to read everything she writes If she is new for you need to get her books as soon as possible. The plot was amazing I liked the fact that we got to know the characters as the story went on . I hope to see more from the characters in the future they were all interesting . Can’t wait to read more by one of my favorite authors everything she writes is just refreshing and mind blowing .
WOW – this might be the best cross on a romance and action/suspense book I’ve ever read! Right through the end of the book, Kylie had me guessing and going through a whole range of emotions and feelings while also shocking and surprising me throughout. Betty has been dating Thom for a year and while things aren’t terrible, they aren’t great either and it prompts her to leave him. While secretly moving her things out, there is an explosion, and soon we find out bits and pieces of who Thom really is. With Betty having no clue, she feels more betrayed than before by Thom, who continues to dig himself into a bigger hole the more he answers her questions. What surprised me though is how throughout the book and the situations they are faced with, they end up reconnecting and her feelings grow stronger than they ever did! I loved that the romance line ran concurrent with the suspense of trying to find out who was trying to kill everyone. It made for the most enjoyable read and I couldn’t put the book down. I loved this book so much especially since is surprised me as I went in with no expectations. I can’t wait to see where/if she takes this style/series further – I’d totally read!
I voluntarily read and reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book.
Lies destroy lives. They break trust. They paint a picture that isn’t reality.
And, unknowingly, this is Betty Dawsey’s life in Kylie Scott’s newest release, LIES, and while after hearing the truth of who her fiancé truly is, she might reconsider wanting the truth because her life literally explodes and she’s left figuring out how to stay alive while also dealing with all the lies that are revealed about the man she thought she knew.
The fact that Betty’s once boring and average Thom turns out to be someone else entirely does a number on her head and her heart is completely understandable, and the maelstrom of feelings that she has to sort through when everything is revealed can’t be an easy feat, especially when her life continues to be threatened and the one person she’s supposed to trust has just been found to be a liar. I would be just as upset with not only the lies but also with the reason Thom chose her as part of his cover story. I credit her for wanting to change the dynamics of her life at the beginning of the story because she doesn’t seem to be a priority to Thom, and I also like the fact that she was strong and came through when it mattered most.
I have to be honest…I couldn’t get a read on Thom for most of the story. I understand the need to live a double life, but I didn’t like how he made Betty feel like she didn’t matter. It’s clear that he has a certain skillset that makes him an excellent covert operative, but it’s his personal life that needs some work, but if Thom can keep himself and Betty alive, they just might stand a chance because as the saying goes, there is always some truth in lies, and when it comes to how he sees Betty and wants to protect her just might win her back.
Amidst trying to work through Betty’s feelings of betrayal as well as her truly learning who her fiancé is and why he’s been living a lie, professionally, Thom is in even more danger than his fiancee’s wrath because there’s a double-agent among his team and if he can’t stop this person from picking off his team one by one, he may not have a chance to make amends.
There is suspense and action involved in every part of the story line, which keeps the plot moving forward as a steady pace. Betty and Thom’s relationship is quite a slow burn, but it makes sense given the circumstances and what he’s willing to do to keep his fiancee safe.
I enjoyed Kylie Scott’s romantic suspense; it’s not the author’s typical type of story, but I love authors who step outside their usual writing bubble and show just how multifaceted they are as writers.

I’m a huge fan of Kylie Scott’s writing, add the enticing blurb amazing cover and the fact I love a romantic suspense it’s safe to say I was very eager to read Lies. Whilst I enjoyed this title it fell somewhat flat of my expectations.
Lies is packed full of action, violence, intrigue, drama and quite a bit of humor.
Betty is a curvy, feisty and fun heroine, whilst Thom is a mysterious hero with his fair share of secrets.
Overall I found Lies to be a tad predictable at times especially for a spy romance, and often it fest a tad rushed for me, particularly the ending. Whilst this particular title wasn’t a hit for me, I will be eagerly awaiting Kylie Scott’s next release.
Lies began like most other romance novels, the female lead talking about her romantic relationship with her best friend. In this case, Betty is packing up her belongings and leaving her fiance Thom. Thom is too emotionally distant, absolutely never prioritizes Betty, and is very lackluster in bed. Perfectly average and very boring
This book, however, is like thinking you are watching 27 Dresses then being dropped into the middle of Mr & Mrs Smith. I was beyond “pleasantly surprised” – the book went from run of the mill romance to “holy crap what just happened??” Betty is quite surprised to learn that Thom is not an insurance adjuster after all.To stay alive, though, no one else can know that she left Thom. What follows is a fast-paced, intense, and exciting journey across both geographical and emotional distance. Betty wasn’t in love with Thom the insurance adjuster, but Thom the secret agent is a completely different person.
I loved this book. It takes the reader on a roller coaster of emotions and made my mouth drop in shock more than once. Lies is going in my re-read list, for sure.
4.5 stars
This is my favourite Kylie Scott book to date and that’s saying a lot as I have loved her other books. once I started this I was completely hooked. It was full of drama, angst, action, humour and some burning chemistry that was waiting for one spark to ignite.
Everything Betty has believed about her fiancé was a lie and she’s now thrust into a situation over her head. She is now having to find out what the truth is and get to know the real Thom and try to survive.
Kylie Scott did a brilliant job writing this. I loved all the characters. Betty was feisty and strong considering her world had just exploded, she was torn with her emotions of feeling betrayed and falling for the ‘new’ Thom. He was intriguing as we got to know him more. Thom started off quite robotic in ways, very standoffish. He couldn’t understand why Betty had been considering leaving him, why she thought he didn’t care. Bear and Fox completely entertained me with their humour and banter. Would love to read more from them.
Only thing that stopped me from rating this 5 stars was that I would have loved for it to be written from a dual POV as I would have loved to know what Thom was thinking throughout this.
This book had a True Lies (starring Arnold Schwarzenegger and Jamie Curtis and directed by James Cameron, 1994) feel to it–an established couple, with the female thinking her life with the male boring and the male keeping one hell of a secret from the female, who are about to go from ho-hum to oh yeah when the bad guys get in the way. The plots are, of course, vastly different other than those commonalities, and Kylie Scott does a highly commendable job weaving together all these elements to create an entertaining story. One of my favorite things here is that Betty and Thom didn’t truly fall madly in love with each other until they got to honestly get to know one another while they played the whole cat-and-mouse game with the villains. It did take a while for me to connect with these two, but once I did, they proved to be interesting characters. Lies was a good overall read, one that reminds us to be careful what you wish for, but clearly it worked out for Thom and Betty. This gets four stars.
