Betty Dawsey knows that breaking things off with Thom Lange is for the best. He’s nice, but boring, and their relationship has lost its spark. But steady and predictable Thom, suddenly doesn’t seem so steady and predictable when their condo explodes and she’s kidnapped by a couple of crazies claiming that Thom isn’t who he says he is. Thom is having a hellish week. Not only is he hunting a double … hunting a double agent, but his fiancé dumped him, and thanks to his undercover life, she’s been kidnapped.
Turns out Thom is Operative Thom and he’s got more than a few secrets to share with Betty if he’s going to keep her alive. With both their lives on the line, their lackluster connection is suddenly replaced by an intense one. But in his line of work, feelings aren’t wanted or desired. Because feelings can be a lethal distraction.

Entertaining, but got a bit tiresome and unbelievable.
Enjoyable characters. Fast moving plot.
Audiobook review:
This is one of those moments when I’m kind of mad at myself for not trying this author sooner. And now that I have read my first book by her I definitely want to check out some more.
Lies was this fun combination of romantic comedy and action adventure. And I love the fact that it draws you in from the very beginning. I loved all the main and secondary characters, the good guys anyway. And I loved the quick pace and solid writing that kept my attention. Kylie Scott paired with Andi Arndt for the narrator definitely was a winning pair. I didn’t want to stop listening.
I greatly enjoyed this book! The witty quips between characters and during internal dialog were a perfect fit with my sense of humor, so I chuckled frequently. Consequently, I fell in love with the heroine and wanted all the best for her. The section of the book that immediately preceded the ending was a tad contrived and felt a bit rushed, but that was easily overlooked because the rest of the book was close to perfect. I will definitelyt be reading more of this writer’s work.
Chocked full of surprises throughout the book. Just all around enjoyed this book
This isn’t normally the genre I go for, but Kylie Scott has never let me down before. And her record is still pristine. This was great! It reminded me, in some ways, of The Spy Who Dumped Me. It had a similar feel, but was a completely different story. Despite the action and suspense it was still a romantic story with a generous helping of steam. And I loved that we got a heroine who was both curvy and a badass.
This book was a 3.5 stars for me.
I did like the heroine because she was like any sane person in a situation like hers. And the hero was not half bad.
He was mostly a duche, but he did have some redeeming features at some points, although I would have fucking killed him at the end because of what a duchebag he came out to be.
As for the girl, I either hadn’t payed much attention while I listened to the audiobook, or there was not much of a description about the fact that she is a plus size woman, but I adore that!
I liked a lot the action scenes we got to read about because it was well described and something I’d definitely want to read about in mafia books and not just in a book about a “spy”.
This book reminded me of the movie, True Lies, with Arnold Schwarzenegger and Jamie Lee Curtis, where our Hero, Thom, is an operative for a secret organization. His alter-ego’s fiancee, Betty, gets caught up in one of his dangerous missions when she’s kidnapped. In this unusual twist of the fake fiancee trope, we also get romantic suspense as Thom, Betty and a menagerie of side characters tries to figure out who’s out to kill him.
I rarely give 5 stars to anything, but I really liked this book. Thom was so reserved, for reasons which quickly became apparent, that it was great to see him have to open up and give in to loving Betty. And she was hilarious. The epilogue showed how close to normal he was able to get. This was definitely different for Kylie, but I really enjoyed the new premise.
Betty Dawsey knows that breaking things off with Thom Lange is for the best. Hes nice, but boring, and their relationship has lost its spark. But steady and predictable Thom, suddenly doesnt seem so steady and predictable when their condo explodes and shes kidnapped by a couple of crazies claiming that Thom isnt who he says he is. I enjoyed this book with a story line full of action , spies, drama and sex I found the characters funny and quirky It did get a little strange for me at chapter 11 I just didn’t think it needed it, all over this was a good read.
What a thrill ride!
Nonstop action paired with intrigue and plenty of steamy moments! Completely unputdownable.
Thom is a devoted dreamboat, and Betty is so much sassy fun.
I have never read a Kylie Scott book so I did not know what to expect going into this book but boy did I love every second of it! There was twist and turns everywhere in this book! Betty and Thom is such an untraditional couple and their storyline is great! They had to work really hard for a HEA. This book had so much action, and the right amount of drama, and humor. An untraditional love story but beautiful. I really hope that their is a series that follows the other members of the zoo!
This book was bonkers, I loved it.
Betty and Thom. She’s got sass and he’s boring? Hold on folks. The title is aptly named Lies. She’s overlooked a lot and he’s given her the bare minimum.
Shes not putting up with his absences and lack of pretty much everything in their relationship. Lvg the ring and taking her boxes she finds herself thrown, quite literally. This is where things get confusing and enlightening.
When things get tough she gets tougher. She pushes back and he very reluctantly reveals bits of his truths and lies. On the run, they discover everything they should have learned about each other, about themselves while dating.
Betty is much stronger than Thom or anyone else give her credit for. She fights for him, for them, for what is right. She fights until she has no fight left. Even then, she realizes things about herself, dusts herself off and does the impossible. What might that be? Sorry! No spoilers!
I will say this book packed a punch. Intrigue and every emotion under the sun sprinkled with a generous portion of sass and chemistry amidst the rubble of Lies. It’s a must read.
This was more suspenseful and action packed than Kylie’s usual fare but every bit as engrossing and swoony as her earlier books. Kylie Scott is a goddess and I would read her shopping lists if she published them.
4.5 stars. Great book.
This book was an intense, hot, steamy, thrillride. Another great book by Kylie Scott!
Wow, this was action-packed!
I have read a few books by Kylie Scott before but not like this, it took me by surprise.
The characters;
I loved Betty she was adorable, a woman with backbone and she made me laugh, a curvy girl who said it how it was.
“I think I’d prefer a jerk who was genuinely Into me than a nice guy phoning it in. Honestly, I’d rather go adopt a dozen cats and settle into old age and isolation than be with someone who treats me as if I’m an afterthought”
I was immediately hooked on the plot, Betty started to pack up her belongings because the guy she had been in a relationship with for a year was rarely home, always working away, the sex was mediocre and she felt he wasn’t really with her even when he was home, he always seemed distracted with work which she thought was as an insurance assessor, so when he went off on business again without having the chat Betty had asked for to discuss their relationship, Betty with the help of her friend began to pack up her belongings and move out, they filled the car and then all of a sudden BOOM, the house blows up.
Betty was an ordinary woman in an ordinary yet boring relationship as she described it and then all of a sudden her life changed, she finds out her boyfriend isn’t as boring as she thought, not in his job and definitely not in the bedroom, quite the opposite in fact.
There’s plenty of action in LIES, shootings, FBI agents, espionage, danger and of course romance.
A definite must-read for someone who likes lots of action, drama, humor, great characters and a hea in their romance reads.
3.25 stars. This book was pretty good, but not my favorite by Kylie Scott. Lies is Thom and Betty’s story. Betty and Thom have been in a relationship, dating and then engaged, for a year. But Betty is unhappy and thinks their relationship is stale. But when she decides to break up with him, and is in the process of leaving the house they share, the house explodes. She is kidnapped and she finds out that Thom is not who she thought he was. Thom is actually a spy. He saves Betty, but they must go on the run from his enemies in order to stay safe. Betty learns who Thom really is and that her relationship is nothing like she thought.
It took me a while to feel the love and chemistry between Thom and Betty. When the book begins they’ve been in a relationship for a year, but we don’t get to see the beginning of the relationship and what made them like each other. Instead, we see that Betty is breaking up with him because she isn’t happy with the mediocrity they are settling for. Thom is average in all aspects of life (and we find out later that is on purpose). But as the story unfolds, we see that nothing in their relationship was what she thought. Now Betty must deal with who Thom really is and they must find their way back to each other in the midst of running from danger.
I didn’t feel a big connection to either character. Still, Betty seemed nice enough, but Thom had very little personality and came off cold. I liked the story in Lies, even though it has a plot device that I steer clear of. But, once that happened, I never got back the feeling of love. I couldn’t really feel any of the emotions in the book, especially at the end. Still, this was not a bad book. It was entertaining, fast paced and cinematic. I enjoyed it in the way I would enjoy a movie- entertaining from a distance.
Overall, Lies was a fast paced, easy read with some action, suspense and a dash of romance. While it was not my favorite, I do still think it is worth reading.
Rip roaring great fun. Wouldn’t want to be Betty though, except for getting Thom. Betty isn’t ready for what’s coming but is, hmmm, flexible , and adaptable. Ready for my next Kylie fix!
