Betty Dawsey knows that breaking things off with Thom Lange is for the best. He’s nice, but boring, and their relationship has lost its spark. But steady and predictable Thom, suddenly doesn’t seem so steady and predictable when their condo explodes and she’s kidnapped by a couple of crazies claiming that Thom isn’t who he says he is. Thom is having a hellish week. Not only is he hunting a double … hunting a double agent, but his fiancé dumped him, and thanks to his undercover life, she’s been kidnapped.
Turns out Thom is Operative Thom and he’s got more than a few secrets to share with Betty if he’s going to keep her alive. With both their lives on the line, their lackluster connection is suddenly replaced by an intense one. But in his line of work, feelings aren’t wanted or desired. Because feelings can be a lethal distraction.

Holy Cow!
Bruce Willis playing Die Hard crossed with Mission Impossible’s Tom Cruise to create the ultimate action-adventure hero in Thom Lange. He’s smart, savvy, knows how to handle his ah-hum, weapon, and oh yeah, sexy-as-sin.
Betty Dawsey is done with having a lacklustre relationship with her fiancé’s shadow. Thom spent more attention on his boring job than he ever thought of spending on her. Once again she’d settled for Good-Enough instead of Mr. Perfect. When was she going to learn?
But then their house blows up and she’s kidnapped by not very nice people who insist her Thom is someone else entirely, and suddenly Betty’s world turns upside down.
This book was unputdownable!
There are so many funny, snarky comments in the midst of fast-paced action and steamy, hot scenes that I had a hard time choosing three for this post.
Best lines:
“Our sex life was not amazing.”
It takes him a moment to respond. “The average cohabitating couple has sex approximately fifty-one times a year. When you deduct time spent away due to work, we met the average.”
“We met the average? Huh,” I say. “How I aspire to always meet the average. It’s my life goal, really.”
LIES BY KYLE SCOTT
Maybe I should just let our unknown nemesis kill me. Blow me to smithereens. Because, honestly, this is the worst breakup of a nonexistent relationship ever.
LIES BY KYLIE SCOTT
My heels sit discarded on the other side of the room where I’d thrown them earlier. A shattered heart and sore feet were too fucking much to deal with in one day.
LIE BY KYLE SCOTT
I give Lies 5+ lovely kisses- A rollercoaster ride you’ll wish never ends!
Where should I start to describe the awesomeness that is this book? The heroine is PERFECTION. She’s hilarious and badass, and no one’s doormat. Second, the hero is a super-secret operative and he’s been purposely terrible in the sack to convince the heroine (his fiancée) he’s just an average insurance investigator. If you liked the movie True Lies, you will LOVE this book. I could not stop reading it. Funny and entertaining on every page.
OMG! I haven’t read such a fun and unpredictable story in a long time.
Kylie, this book should be a movie, a true romantic comedy.
Everything began when Elizabeth Dawsey – Betty – decided to leave her fiance, Thom; the one who was always traveling for work, and when he was home he didn’t pay much attention to her. And the sex? Meh… it could be better.
With the help of her girl friend Jen, Betty packed her things and left Thom a farewell letter along with her engagement ring.
But as they were leaving the house, it exploded. That’s right, it was all blown up.
Soon Betty found herself being taken in an ambulance, but in fact she was being taken captive.
Tied to a chair in an interrogation room, a guy named Snake – and a woman named Fox – wanted to know everything she knew about Wolf.
But who was Wolf? She had never seen any of these zoo people.
But you already wonder who Wolf was, right?
That’s right, Thom and Wolf were the same person.
And from there, Betty saw her life turned upside down, running away from gunfire and explosions, going into hiding places and learning how to use a gun.
And most of all, knowing this new Thom.
This new Thom was intelligent, smart, alive, fast, strong, loving and the sex… OMG!!! Heaven.
But living with him would mean living in constant danger, at least until they found out who the traitor was within the Organization.
Sexy, funny, addictive.
And the ending is wonderful.
more than 5 stars
“I know he’s dangerous. I also know he says he’s on my side. I think I trust him. But none of this really helps answer the fundamental question: Who the hell have I been sleeping with?”
Betty is tired of her relationship with Thom. Her fiance is a good guy, responsible, stable, secure, and her life with him is too monotonous. She decides to leave him and in doing so, she was not prepared to see her life explode. Literally.
After the explosion, she discovers that her life was a planned lie, with the purpose of keeping Thom’s disguise who, surely, was nothing boring or monotonous. Torn between anger, heartache and desire, Betty finds it difficult to forgive her fiancé, but finds herself involved and even aroused by the new and dangerous side of Thom.
The couple has a peculiar and engaging dynamic. While we discover the reasons why Thom finds it difficult to connect emotionally with people, we see Betty find out who her real fiancé really is, while wondering what part of her relationship was real, if it was all a lie and if she could trust Thom. All this as she runs to save her life.
Lots of chemistry and an interesting dose of humor. Dangers, revelations and twists take the breath away and cut the heart. With great protagonists and good secondary characters, the author delivers the kind of story that grab the reader’s attention from beginning to end, is short and almost impossible to put down. Betty is the type of girl any of us can identify with: human, strong, insecure, but also fearless. Despite her fears, she does not drown herself in dramas. Complex in the right measure and balanced enough to really be the protagonist of her life and her story. Like few we read today.

Holy geez what did I just read? Lies was so different from anything I’ve read from Kylie Scott before but I was hooked. The opening alone gave me the big eyes and I just had to know what would happen next.
Betty was a rock star. I loved her sarcasm and how she took everything that was thrown her way in stride. Sure she had her questions but she handled herself remarkably well. Thankfully, she had Thom to help keep her focused on the end game of figuring out who was behind the madness.
Talk about a whirlwind. At every turn Thom and Betty were either dodging bullets or trying to sort through their relationship issues. It was a delicate balance of in the here and now and hoping for the future. And when they were working together, things just went smoother (go figure).
I was so wrapped up in Betty and Thom’s story that I didn’t want it to end. Lies was completely addicting. Witty. Dangerous. Sexy. Unexpected. Kylie Scott got me again and again with all the twists. Especially the ending. I think my heart legit stopped beating a time or two. Gah! I loved this and my fingers are crossed to see more of this crazy cast of characters again somewhere down the line!

This time we get something a little different from Kylie Scott.
We have 26 year old florist Betty. Who is about to leave her fiancé Thom (34). He’s just so boring and never home and ugh. It’s just not what she expected her life as an almost married woman to be like. But suddenly she’s being kidnapped and just like that her boring Thom is not as boring anymore. He never was. He just pretended to be the boring average guy. In real life he’s a secret agent. An operative – or whatever you want to call him.
He’s suddenly all sorts of hot and interesting! And he’s also responsible for the fact that they’re running for their lives! LOL!
This time Kylie doesn’t give us a #RockStarRomance or a sweet little cutie romance.
It’s a James Bondy kind of thing! But we still have lots of funny and adorable and sexy moments. Don’t expect something completely suspensy and actiony and dangerous.
Yes, we are in dangerous and exciting situations most of the book, but all through the action and the running and waiting and looking for the bad guys and whatnot, we’re trying to figure out if Betty can forgive Thom for lying – because our Thom doesn’t want to give up on the first real relationship he has ever had. He loves being Betty’s fiancé – he loves that she makes him feel like a normal guy.
Adorable!
I really adored those two!
It was a great spy-dramancedy.
I had some tiny little problems.
Betty is 26. Had someone asked me how old I would guess she is? I would’ve said at least early thirties – she does not come across that young at all.
And then, just like in Kylie’s last book – this book starts and we’re right in the story. There’s no warm-up – no foreplay – no prologue. I’m not sure how I feel about that. I kinda like it, because I hate unnecessary bla bla – but I also wanted a bit MORE before the real action begins.
It feels like the book was a hundred pages longer, but an editor told Kylie she had to cut this and that and that and so much more … it would’ve been better with some more pages.
But other than that – it was a cute little thrillery romance! I liked reading it! I wouldn’t mind seeing it on TV one day!
And I REALLY love the cover!!!!!
LIES was a fun & sexy James Bondy dramance! Run to your nearest amazon for your own Thom – this one is MINE!!!
I don’t even know exactly what to say about Lies. This is so different from the books that I normally love and enjoy by this author. I felt like it was more of a suspenseful thriller than anything else. I was so wrapped up in the action and who was trying to kill them that the romance fell to the side. We get little glimpses into what their relationship was like and how it wasn’t perfect due to Tom’s job and maintaining his front. But we see that they actually do love each other through all the madness of staying alive. It just wanted enough to truly convince me.
4.5 stars
This book was everything that I needed it to be. I loved the characters, the story, and the pacing was great. There was comedy, drama, suspense and the perfect amount of romance. It was my first book by Ms Scott but I was very impressed and will be sure to pick up more buy her
Let’s face it, most of us fell in love with Kylie Scott due to her Stage Dive series. I mean, who wouldn’t. This book is quite a departure from her normal story lines, and her hero is even not the norm in her books. These 2 things make her and this book even more fantastic for me! Many authors “stick to what they know” or what they are successful at. Kylie’s foray to this type storyline is even more impressive because she did it so well. I was captivated from the explosion (basically page 1). I didn’t always know what was coming and this was a welcome surprise. The reader got to “meet” the hero (Thom) along with the heroine (Betty) despite the fact that they were already engaged, since he has a secret life she knew nothing about. The non stop energy and excitement along with the new to me concept of the storyline (very few authors could get me to read about a hit man) kept me enthralled and made it very hard to put the book down when life called. I enjoyed the secondary characters as well and hope to see them again soon in their own stories.
The sex was good (cue the cigarette). The plot was silly but not smart.
I love a fake fiancé story. Fake spouse, fake significant other, doesn’t matter…I love them all. This was an interesting twist to that. This is a fake relationship story where the woman is unaware the relationship is fake. In fact, she’s getting ready to leave her fiancé due to the lack of any sort of excitement in their relationship.
Betty is understandably upset when she learns she was possibly used as a cover for Thom, although Thom claims to love her even after the ruse is up. It doesn’t help that they’re running for their lives and have no idea who to actually trust. Betty has no choice but to trust Thom with her life, she’s still not sure if she should trust him with her heart.
This story is a lot of fun. When Thom and Betty are discussing their sex life and she expresses having been dissatisfied, Thom’s reactions and excuses had me howling with laughter. Thom is a wonderful spy. He’s very analytical and views things from all angles before making a move. That may work with his undercover work, not so much in the bedroom. Thom was giving Betty what he thought she wanted…a normal, average relationship. In other words, he’d been holding back.
As the story moves along, it’s obvious that Thom’s feelings for Betty are and were always real. The key is getting her to believe that. And for Betty to confront her own feelings to really figure them out. Their journey is unique and I loved every minute of it. There is also devastation and pain along with the love and joy, so be warned.
I’m so glad I remember I had this book sitting waiting for me. I cannot believe I let a Kylie Scott book go unread for so long when I already owned it! Unacceptable.
I was genuinely surprised by this book!! Very easy to read!
Wonderful book, great characters
I really enjoyed this book. I haven’t read this author before but I’m sure I’ll read more of her work now. Very much a page turner and LOL funny at times. I read the sample on Amazon and was sucked right in. It’s written in first person, which I tend to not like (except for Mary Stewart:) But after reading the sample I bought it immediately., Good book.
Loved the characters!!!!
I really liked it
Writing was elementary. I was bored through the entire book. Wouldn’t recommend.
Not believable
This one is different than the usual rom-com, the beginning leads you to believe it’ll be ho-hum. It is not. You’ll think the story has ended sad and ho-hum. Think again. This girl has taken notes throughout and has learned from her man. You GOTTA KEEP READING to the end.
Not so good for me. Maybe mafia chicks aren’t my thing
