LIE WITH ME is masterful. Think Highsmythe meets Du Maurier. This has a Talented Mr. Ripley vibe with a lovely, classic voice – highly recommended!
Lie With Me by author Sabine Durrant is a suspenseful psychological thriller which hooks you from the beginning. Now I will have to honestly say, the more I read, the more I detested the main character, Paul Morris. I would read and think, “This guy is making me so mad, he is an arrogant jerk!” If you have this same feeling, trust me, stick with the book!
I won’t post spoilers, but Paul is experiencing a time in his life when he has not lived up to his potential, has no money, no home, and it seems, no friends. He has a great sense of self-worth and seems to expect others to accept his impulsive little lies. They are just little lies that pop out of his mouth before he realizes the impact these lies may have on others.
But does that justify what happens to Paul? You must read the book… it is shockingly good!

I loved this book but I want a sequel. What happens next?!
The main character is someone you love to hate. Je was so intriguing and captivating even though he was a massive a**hole. I finished in just a few days due to just needing to know how everything happened. I dont want to give away to much but I would recommend it.
This is a slow-burn literary thriller that sizzles under the sun of its Greek setting. Simply delicious.
I really enjoyed this novel. The main character, Paul Morris is a very egotistical middle-aged man who believes he is always one step ahead of everyone else in his exploitation of the people around him. Although he may be very sly and cunning, let’s just say he’s not alone! I loved the path the author leads us on throughout the entire storyline til the end. GREAT job!
This is my favourite psychological thriller. Absolutely masterful writing.
Wow! The protagonist is such a dynamic, twisted, strange, compelling character that his story is unputdownable from beginning to end. I was gripped by this story, by the writing and the situation. And while so many psychological fiction novels don’t end satisfactorily in my opinion, this one absolutely did. Read it!
This is one of those books that stay with you even if you have difficulty getting through it. It was a slow read for me but as I plugged along it became more and more interesting. Having written a novel, a self absorbed, sex crazed, jerk finds himself broke and living with his mother. He hatches a plan to get a previous female acquaintance, who he really doesn’t remember, to fall for him so he can sponge off her. Oops, he falls for her… too bad for him!
I received an advanced copy of this book in exchange for a fair and honest review. I got about half way through this book and just can’t finish it. That almost never happens. I HATE the main character! I can’t put up with him anymore. No matter how much I want to finish this, I can’t. I HATE not finishing a book, but I can’t! The main character, is a washed up writer who lives with his mother and is a freeloader. He goes on a holiday with his girlfriend and their friends. He rambles on, and on, and on. I just can’t put up with him!
Ok, I was SO disappointed in this one and sure I was missing something, that I felt compelled to look at other reviewers’ comments to see what was going on. Sure enough, a bunch of them agreed with me – the term “slow burner” appears a lot – that this was not the fast-paced thriller it was billed to be… I’ve read enough glowing reviews and enough “it was very slow for the majority but the end was great!” to realize that there probably IS merit here and that it might well be worth reading to the end just to see what the greatness actually entails. BUT I CAN’T. A thriller can build slow – that’s fine – but when I’m 30, 40, 50% in and I’m STILL waiting for it to ignite or even spark, well, to me it’s no longer a thriller… I couldn’t make myself care about the protagonist – a self-absorbed dismal human being if ever I’ve stumbled across one – so there was nothing to keep me in the book in that direction. The supporting cast is there, but nothing to write home about (although I suspect this may be the angle that picks up eventually). And the plot just stumbled along for me… It’s possible that I gave up too soon, but I was worn out by the lack of excitement/action/anything gripping and couldn’t stick it out.

O, what a tangled web we weave when first we practise to deceive! – Walter Scott. A great quote that sums up a not so great story. Paul, the main character and narrator of this tale, has to be one of the most unlikable characters that I’ve ever come across. He’s arrogant, womanizing, lazy, manipulative, and deceitful. I came to the conclusion pretty quickly that we aren’t actually supposed to like Paul, and that’s okay, but there needs to be something that pulls a reader in and gives them a reason to want to know what happens to a character like that. Not only was that key element missing, but I didn’t find a single character in this book to be remotely likable. The story crawls along at a snail’s pace until the very end. Then, we get a big twist and an almost conclusion. Sadly, I couldn’t find it in me by that point to care one way or another what might happen to our hapless narrator. The subtitle on this one claims ” the gripping bestseller and suspense read of the year,” which rather suits the general theme of this tale. In fact, the only thing that kept me reading was my own OCD-like penchant for being unable to leave a book unfinished.
Things are not always as they seem and this book is one of those things. The author weaves a beautifully written tale of about a man who thinks highly of himself and has had a life lead on the backs of others. Uncaring, pompous, self-imposed, just prime for them. He was all they knew and needed them to be. He was perfect.
Loved the story and how the author played this so well. There is never a hint, never a reason to doubt. The characters are well played and everything they need to be. He is his own worst enemy and so are they. Lies and smoke screens. What’s the truth what’s the lie? I haven’t read this author before, I do love her style.
