From a USA Today bestselling author
Burned-out software engineer Jake Martin and his Golden Retriever, Fred, live in a mountain cabin far enough from Denver to escape the rat-race but not far enough to escape its crime. While remodeling an old house he uncovers a stack of love letters that will turn his world inside out.
When word of the letters gets out, people start dying, including the owner … dying, including the owner of the house Jake was remodeling. With his main source of income gone, he lets his friend and neighbor, Bonnie Jones, talk him into searching for the killer after they are offered a large retainer. The problem is the person who hires them is the major suspect.
With the help of Fred and Bonnie, Jake continues to find more evidence that his new employer is trying to create a smokescreen to divert attention from himself. Will the trio of amateur detectives be able to stop the murders, or will they become the next victims?

Interesting plot.
Really enjoyed this book.
Well written. I very much appreciate that you don’t feel the need to use bad language.
It seems that most of the action involves drinking beer, drinking coffee or going to Mcdonalds. The author needs to become more inventive when it comes to moving the story along. I read two of his books and they both had the same repetitive problems. I won’t be reading anymore.
Difficult to put the book down. Truly kept my interest and an interesting book to read.
Absolutely loved it !
The dog and the elderly neighbor were fun the rest was bad. Would have gotten me a D in English.
A real page turner. I couldn’t put it down!
The last few chapters were confusing. Wrapped up too fast. Needed more characterization of deceased wife.
It’s a typical cozy mystery. It was well written. It was not full of occult stuff or sex. If you like cozies, you should like this.
Interesting characters that kept me interested in the story.
…and it had a DOG !
I like all of the Richard Houston books!
Good mystery. I have read another mystery by this author and he does a great job
I loved Fred. — what a wonderful change from the usual erotic junk..
Interesting characters. I was very distracted by mis-editing. Unrealistically complicated story line. I would not recommend this book however, I would give this author another chance.
Good read
I loved it
It’s the only one of this series that I’ve read. It was a nice uncomplicated read. I like Jake and Fred.
it was only ok.
