The #1 New York Times bestselling (mostly true) memoir from the hilarious author of Furiously Happy.“Gaspingly funny and wonderfully inappropriate.”—O, The Oprah MagazineWhen Jenny Lawson was little, all she ever wanted was to fit in. That dream was cut short by her fantastically unbalanced father and a morbidly eccentric childhood. It did, however, open up an opportunity for Lawson to find the … open up an opportunity for Lawson to find the humor in the strange shame-spiral that is her life, and we are all the better for it.
In the irreverent Let’s Pretend This Never Happened, Lawson’s long-suffering husband and sweet daughter help her uncover the surprising discovery that the most terribly human moments—the ones we want to pretend never happened—are the very same moments that make us the people we are today. For every intellectual misfit who thought they were the only ones to think the things that Lawson dares to say out loud, this is a poignant and hysterical look at the dark, disturbing, yet wonderful moments of our lives.

My favorite!!!
One of my absolute favorite books. It’s too funny to read in public – I giggle uncontrollably at some of the stories.
I won an ARC of this book and had never previously heard of The Bloggess.
This book was hilarious! There were many laugh out loud moments, some where I actually teared up. And there were others I had to reread or mark the pages so that I can go back and reread them when I need a good laugh. Some of my favorite stories were in chapters entitled: Stanley, the Magical Talking Squirrel, A Series of Helpful Post-it Notes I Left Around the House for My Husband This Week, and The Psychopath on the Other Side of the Bathroom Door. And my new favorite line to use during a fight came from Thanks for the Zombies, Jesus. “You know what? I f-ing dare you to make less sense.” I’m gonna use that one!
Nice short chapters, that were easy to read and kind of rambly and all over the place, but that worked out well for me. Most of the photos were hard to see, but I’m assuming that is because I had a proof copy. It would have been awesome to see those photos.
Great book, and I now follow the blog!
I LOVED this book. Can’t wait until she writes another one!
I want to click all the “What did you like about this book?” buttons. “Let’s Pretend…” is witty, funny, realistic, action-packed, scary, original, informative, entertaining, unpredictable (perhaps I should have put that one in caps), romantic, whimsical, tragic, twisted, inspirational, and haunting. It is at times a tear-jerker; at times steamy (though probably because Jenny left the water running in the shower), and all the time filled with wonderful characters. “Great world building” – I don’t even know what that means, but I have no doubt she has achieved it. The only button I couldn’t in good conscience click was “Easy to read,” because for most of my time reading this book my eyes were blurry with tears from laughing so hard. I humbly suggest a larger font to remedy this unfortunate situation.
I’m not often bossy with strangers, but by golly, READ THIS BOOK.
I love this book! There were a few times where I had uncontrollable laughter and earned odd looks from non-readers. A very entertaining read.
The Bloggess and I are very much alike. She has better stories, however.
I listened to the audiobook version of this one. Highly recommended, y’all.
One of the best I’ve read! If you have anxiety, depression, chronic illness, and/or a sense of humor, read this book!
This is a non-fiction book about the life of the author. She writes about her father who was an eccentric taxidermist and her childhood. She takes us through her life growing up and getting married and having a family of her own.
This book was hilarious. There is no other word for it. I died laughing on about every page, and read several pages to my husband. I have read a lot of serious books, and okay books, so this was a nice change. She keeps her life story light, and you find yourself shaking your head in disbelief. I love sarcastic humor, so this book was right up my alley. There is a lot (a lot) of language so consider yourself warned.
One of my favorite all time books and authors. As much as I wanted to devour the book I paced myself because I knew how sad I’d be when I reached the end and no longer had this to look forward to reading before bed. Although I’m sure my husband appreciated me finishing it because I woke him up on multiple occasions because I truly could not contain my laughter.
This, well really ALL of her books are freakin’ fantastic! When I’m down, I can grab this book and feel better pretty soon. I strongly recommend it!
One of the most amazing books I have ever read!
I love that she takes her worst fears and weaves them into laugh until you cry stories. Everything she touches is from the heart.
Jenny Lawson, is perhaps the funniest writer, I have had the pleasure to read. Way over the top, with foul language and not for the easily offended. Her personality and strange family come through with bright and shiny colors. Love them all.
Absolutely hilarious! I was so sad when it ended, I quickly scooped up her follow up book!
Funniest book I’ve ever read. A bit off-beat, raunchy, and irreverent. Loved it!
Very entertaining read!
Absolutely insane. Ruthlessly wild. Terrifically awful. Oh, wow, she actually wrote down all of those thoughts. No, no, even worse. SAID them. No, WROTE them. I did get a kick out of all the editor’s notes and footnotes. Ha. Hilariously disgusting, I guess. Wow. Never read a book that used, um, body parts (see, I’m not the type who can even TYPE them in my review, and she types them all over the place, and says them in real life, and on her blog, evidently…I don’t read blogs, only books) And I had to read every page, and the afterward or whatever, but at the same time it’s like do NOT let my kids read over my shoulder at all, or ah, what if my MOTHER knew I read this book? Dude, it’s crazy, but…she’s not kidding. She is straight up not even kidding, so it’s great…kind of. Awful, but great. If you don’t read all of it read like the beginning at least.
Somewhat difficult to get through, but insightful.
I am more understanding now of my friends with anxiety issues
Hysterical read! Just what the doctor ordered!
