2019 IAN Outstanding Fiction Winner for LGBTQ Fiction Not a Cliff HangerHis world was water and rhythm. Hard work and drive kept Royal O’Connell one step ahead of his competition. His spot on the swim team, keeping his scholarship, was the only plan that mattered. His world was ebony and ivory. Natural talent and ambition set Camden Morgan apart from the other music majors. His dedication scoring … the other music majors. His dedication scoring him a full ride.
Normally, their paths would have never crossed….
But when Royal meets his best friend’s new roommate, his big plan and Camden’s controlled environment faces a variable that could destroy it all.
Attraction.
The world they live in had no room for error. That undeniable pull between them was dangerous and neither one of them could’ve prepared for the choice they’d have to make.
Love isn’t always an easy road and, when everything they’ve worked for is on the line, they’ll have to decide if being together is worth the risk.

Let There Be Light is an exquisitely composed coming of age romance that will capture your heart! This is a beautifully poetic, and emotional story of 2 people, who come from totally different backgrounds, yet are so intrinsically connected. Royal is attending college on a swimming scholarship, and Camden is a music prodigy. Royal comes from a family of artists, who at times, live in their heads. He is adept at reading people. So when he meets Camden, a loner who relates everything he sees, and hears to music, Royal is instantly intrigued by him. Camden is struggling to break free from his cage, and is drawn to Royal’s kindness, radiance, and courage. Camden’s loneliness is a soulful song that captured Royal’s heart and mind. They change each other in the most authentic, and beautiful way. I loved watching their growth as they opened up to themselves, and to each other. This was not an easy journey for them, but it was so wonderful watching them fight for, and to protect each other. I really loved getting to know Indie and Kai and can’t wait for for their story next. I also enjoyed revisiting with all of the O’Connell family, and Uncle Liam is still my favorite! Ms. Johnson orchestrated a beautifully poetic, and unforgettable love story that drew me in and wouldn’t let go. These characters have so much to say and I cared deeply for them all. I wasn’t ready for it to end and I can’t wait for the next book in the Twin Hearts Duet!
4.5 Stars!
Let me start off by saying that this is not the type of book that I normally would read and was not put off by anything in the book beside Ellis’ behavior. The Author did an AMAZING job giving us Royal and Camden’s story. Her writing made you feel for the characters, including the secondary ones. It was engaging, making me want to keep turning the pages to see the strength and growth. The O’Connell family made my heart happy with their support and love for each other.
I can’t wait for Indie and Kai’s story…
Love in all its forms is precious. Let There Be Light deals with love that, in some eyes, is forbidden and unacceptable. A.M. Johnson’s prose is lyrical and smooth and elegantly gentle and I immediately got lost in her storytelling. I could picture everything she was writing and feel every emotion she was conveying.
A story about young adults coming of age, adjusting to college life, making friends, falling in love – Camden and Royal are beautiful souls. Trying to figure out who you are is hard enough, but when you have a society that doesn’t completely accept a definition you’ve decided on, it makes it that much harder. But with the love and support of those most important to you, anything can be attained.
There’s a message if the reader is willing to listen. Let There Be Light Is simply a love story in its purest form.
There are sometimes that I find myself scared to write a review and this is one of them. This book was so exceptionally amazing that it worries me that my words may not do this book sufficient justice, that what I say may detract from how breathtaking this book truly is. Let There Be Light was a book that seeped into your veins, it stole your heart, claimed your soul and took you to a place of such emotion that it is hard to put into words. Royal and Camden’s story is like watching baby birds learn to fly, they are scared and unsure but they know the risk is so worth the possible fall. It is a story not only to enjoy, but it is inspirational and one that teaches and educates us about love. Words inspired by this author show us the true meaning of love, family and acceptance. My emotions moved from one extreme to another from laughing to crying, from understanding to anger and finally to complete happiness. Their story will be the music that soothes your soul and the rhythm that your heart will beat to.
What can you say right after your heart had been stolen? What can you say right after a book took over your life? What can you say right after you met the most unique boys ever? What can you say right after one of your favorite authors put another masterpiece on your table?
You know what can you say? Nothing. Because finishing this book means silence. Perfect stillness. Quiet cherishing of the beautiful experience.
A.M. Johnson is one of those authors who can write anything, it will turn out utterly perfect. Her words are pure music to the readers’ hearts. She’s touching your soul with each and every tiny little details she puts into her stories. And she creates yet another unforgettable composition. Because
Let There Be Light is a story you have never ever imagined.
Camden and Royal means the world to me. I’m still not ready to let go of them. I will miss them each and every day for the rest of my life. Their journey is something more than special. It’s infinite, it reaches above the skies.
My love for this book is undying. It’s a love that only happens once in a lifetime.
All day I’ve been trying to find the words to sum up how much I loved this book, but I feel like no matter what I say it cannot accurately describe it. Like every book I’ve read by A.M., she draws you in from the first page and makes you feel like you’ve been apart of these characters lives all along. Her way with words is so unique from other authors I have read and her ability to write about tough issues is amazing! I love Royal and Camden more than words
