Lessons for Little Girls – Ms. Allan is a talented storyteller in many genres. This short story tells of a past not long ago were parents did things to their children in the name of punishment. Life has always been brutal through the centuries and what happened fifty years ago was actually a milder form of punishment compared to what could have happened.
Unfortunately, most extreme forms of punishment do cause damage. Along with the punishment received, the young girl was taught that her brother was more important. Of course, this was a holdover from the past centuries, the way it has always been and her parents were not to blame for that mindset.
The damage done to the young girl from one hour of punishment changed her and will be with her forever. This story is a historical lesson showing damage caused by extreme punishment, showing inequality in which child received punishment and showing the lack of awareness of how a parent, or parents, can harm their own families. The younger brother was given carte blanche to continue his transgressions both as a child and later as an adult, along with holding a low value for the female sex.
The young girl will never be the happy child she was, and without help, as she matures will continue to support any male raised as her brother was since this is her norm. Hopefully, she grew up to find a supportive, loving husband and with his care developed into a strong, independent woman who matters. 4*
The Kept Series:
Kept, Book 1 – Although set in Boston, I enjoyed this story by one of my favorite AU authors. The storylines are set up with the day to day life of an American woman and the current journal entries of a 500-year-old British vampire. Toss in a few vampire hunters, best friends and law officers to make a good cast of characters.
The fact that she wants to be a French chef has a few recipes of the base sauces highlighted. Of course, this quickly read, novella length story ends not quite as a cliffhanger but sets up the second book.
Kept, Book 2 – This part is dark and deadly but not graphically gory. There is a massive cliffhanger but getting there is suspense filled and intriguing. It is too easy to slip into book report mode with all the events happening and the emotions running amok.
Ms. Allan does it again bringing a story to life so realistically and mesmerizing that you cannot stop reading. Then too soon, it is the last page and you want more! I contacted the author to review her books and picked up this up through Booksprout. 5*
Kept, Book 3 – Resist reading one of Ms. Allan’s books is as futile as resisting a vampire’s hold. The only complaint I have is this comes in parts instead complete.
It is hard to find an author that grabs your attention and imagination the way this wonderfully talented Aussie writer does with each book she writes. Well thought out storylines, variety of characters and unexpected surprises galore are part of ever stories. Plus, she has a good sense of humor.
I didn’t put this book down until the last page and yes, it’s another cliffhanger. There is a lot of emotion and the range includes many. Ms Allan has this genre mastered. I have read all but two or three of her books and I have seen a talented storyteller grow in her skills and her stories just get more powerful, more mesmerizing and always difficult to put down until the last page. 5*
Kept, Book 4 – And all must end. But not how you think it would. All the storylines come together into a wonderful ending for an interesting series. The steady pace carries the reader through pages filled with excitement, humor, action and plenty of suspense and intrigue. This talented author manages to bring originality to the worn out subject of vampires and their prey. It is easy to lost in the pages with the descriptive storytelling mesmerizing the reader. 5*

Opens horribly with abusive parents making their will known.
I received a copy of this book as a gift. This is my honest review.
