If you like heroic fantasy, this is for you! Crammed full with epic battles, non-stop action and one of the greatest protagonists of all time – Druss!
Heroes you can respect, who have a code and live or die by it. Good ol fashioned sword and sorcery at its best
I thought it was a decent story. I liked the characters well enough, damaged as most of them were. While it isn’t as heavy as some of the big multi book stories popular nowadays, i would recommend it as an “in between / I need a break from these 1200 page novels”, kind of book.
The book that really put David Gemmell on the map as an exceptional exponent of heroic fantasy. Gemmell’s ability to take archetypes and depict them as real people was always one of his greatest strengths, and he succeeds admirably here. Legendary axe-wielding warrior Druss marshals a mismatched group of Drenai to defend the mighty fortress of …
Action, action, action!
okay, when I read the blurb that said it was an epic military fantasy, I thought I had picked a book that is wrong for me, But, I had it so I tried to read it. Big surprise, I enjoyed the whole thing. There was plenty of character development and story beyond the military side. Loved it.
Good story….sort of simple but fun enough that I’ll likely read book 2
This is one heck of a book that makes the blood burn with want of action. Every character is good, it is an absolute necessary read for those that love the Fantasy genre.
Gemmell said that he based this story, in part, off of the Alamo. If you can picture an invading horde stood off by a legend looking for death in a fortress that was never meant to last, you still only have part of why this is such a fantastic read.
Awesome book. I own the paperback and read it several times. I want the nook version so I can enjoy and reduce the space my library takes up.
I really enjoyed this book. So many fantasy books just rehash the same old story. This one was more original, although it was somewhat predictable. Interesting characters and enjoyable story.
Along the lines of Robert E Howard. A true sword and sorcery romp.
One of the best fantasy books I feel that I’ve ever read. Great gateway to the works of David Gemmell. Great pace, excellent action, good character development. This is a must read.
I have read everything David Gemmell has written. Fantastic characters, and story lines.
