A bestseller!
What was once the western United States is now home to the Republic, a nation perpetually at war with its neighbors. Born into an elite family in one of the Republic’s wealthiest districts, fifteen-year-old June is a prodigy being groomed for success in the Republic’s highest military circles. Born into the slums, 15-year-old Day is the country’s most wanted criminal. But his … country’s most wanted criminal. But his motives may not be as malicious as they seem.
From very different worlds, June and Day have no reason to cross paths — until the day June’s brother, Metias, is murdered and Day becomes the prime suspect. Caught in the ultimate game of cat and mouse, Day is in a race for his family’s survival, while June seeks to avenge Metias’s death. But in a shocking turn of events, the two uncover the truth of what has really brought them together, and the sinister lengths their country will go to keep its secrets.
Full of nonstop action, suspense, and romance, this novel is sure to move readers as much as it thrills.

It is a dystopian novel set way in the future after many wars. It is the first book in a wonderful trilogy and I would totally recommend it. The book is split between two personalities, a soldier of and one if the most wanted criminals. It is great how their stories intertwine, and there is a small romance.
I absolutely loved it! I’ve read all of three of them! The twist in this series is mind blowing! If u haven’t read all of them, don’t worrky I won’t spoil it for u 🙂
I really liked this book. It grabs you and doesn’t let you go. Great characters, good action, unique world setting.
I was expecting great things from this book and was pretty disappointed. There was so much potential here, but it needed better editing. I felt that the author really telegraphed her plot. So much so, that within the first several chapters, I had it all. Everything unfolded exactly as I was expecting and I really hated being right.
Excellent series that I keep rereading.
I finally read this book! This involved an interesting dystopian setting, although I wasn’t sure how the USA got set up the way it did (maybe I just missed that part?). The story had some nice surprising twists, especially at the end where I was expecting certain things to happen in a certain predictable way. I enjoyed the reveals throughout …
Love this series, but it could be a little slow at times. <3
I give Legend a solid 3.5. It was fast paced and kept my interest the whole time. However, I found it a bit simple compared to other well written YA Distopian (and YA in general). As an adult, I would like to have seen more complexity in the characters and story line. There was more focus on attraction and physical beauty than I like. I don’t need …
I enjoyed the book, I’m glad I didn’t read any reviews before going in or I might have had my mind set that I’d be bored. I was not bored, I found myself wanting to read more to see what was going on. It’s interesting in the dystopian world to find a book that sets two teens from different stations in life and see how different their lives are. I …
I’ve read this and yet can’t remember a thing about it. Obviously it made little impact on me.
I read this book a few years back. It’s about a future world where the government controls everything. Even the sicknesses that run through the lower class. June was brought up in the upper class; military with her brother. Day lives with his siblings and struggling mother. This story is about survival and uncovering what is truly happening in …
David Gemmell tells a tale of very real adventure, the stuff of true epic fantasy.
I saw this book in a window in the Hastings Observer news office back in the early 1980s. A new fantasy novel and myself a huge fan of the genre. Written by a local writer who worked for the paper. What a find!! David Gemmell went on to pen a stack of terrific fantasy books and was one of the best-known writers of the genre during the 80s and …
My first book by David Gemell. I’m not sure why it took me so long to find him but this was an extraordinary read. I thoroughly enjoyed it. The grizzled veteran Druss was thoroughly likable as he plodded toward his destiny.
David Gemmel wrote superb action fantasy. His characters, like Druss, make a person wonder “What would this hero think of me?”. His books are unforgettable, and I wish that all of them would be made into excellent movies by Peter Jackson. It makes me sad that Gemmel is dead because we all missed decades of more fantastic books, and he deserved …
I adore David Gemmell. He creates such complex characters, in that no one is all black or white. Even the heroes have faults and weaknesses, and some of the villains or enemies sometimes have moments where they have empathy and honor and redeeming heroism. However, the main heroes, such as Druss the Legend, is so awe-inspiring in that his sense …
BLURB
He is DRUSS the Legend. His skill in battle has earned him a fearsome reputation throughout the world and the stories of his life are told everywhere. But the grizzled veteran has spurned a life of fame and fortune and has retreated to the solitude of his mountain lair to await his old enemy, Death.
Meanwhile, barbarian hordes of the Nadir …
David Gemmell, may he rest in peace, was one of the great fantasy writers of our time and this is the book that launched his career. Gemmell had been diagnosed with cancer and says that he started this book to occupy his mind while he was in treatment. It’s unlike anything in the genre that I had ever read. A sixty-year-old legendary warrior comes …
This was the first of David’s books, and what a first book to read. From that moment on I awaited each of his books with bated breath, and whilst some weren’t all that I hoped for, almost all were. If you love heroic fantasy, then this is as good a place to start as any.
The first time I saw a copy of this book, it was called “Against the Horde” and I knew I had to have it. It was printed and distributed by a smaller publishing house before Random House picked up the books. No one does hack-and-slash better than Gemmell, and this is the author’s first entry into an excellent series.
