From the award-winning author of Cold BetrayalWhat dark secret is hidden in her past? What evil has been handed down through the generations?Emily Burton found happiness in a small, picturesque town on the west coast of Vancouver Island. Her sense of peace and security is shattered when she’s brutally attacked, and an innocent person is murdered. The authorities believe the incident is random, … authorities believe the incident is random, until Emily becomes the target of further violence and threats.
With the help of her enigmatic neighbor, she uncovers an eerily similar crime that dates back sixty years. Could there be a connection between the two attacks? Did malevolence stretch its deadly arm across generations?
Emily is convinced there’s a link, but she needs to find it before it finds her.

Incredible!
McCarthy has penned another great story. Legacy of Fear is a remarkably written story that shows off the storytelling talents of this author. It’s one of those edge-of-your-seat page turners, making you not want to stop until the very last word. Emily is an interesting character who is stronger than first let on. I really thought she grew as a character, and that shows how people may have turning points in life that affect them forever, even changing them. The characters, all of them, were well developed, and the story just pulls the reader right in. I look forward to reading more by this author. This read is definitely recommended by Amy’s Bookshelf Reviews.
I loved this book. The characters were believable and fully fleshed and even though I can usually figure out who the bad guy was, I was totally surprised by the person and the solution to this mystery. This is also a prickly romance, with surprises.
I have read several books by this author and I fully intend to read every book she writes.
Congrats to the author for introducing us to Emily. Divorced, living in a small place on the ocean with her dog, Max, vegetarian and a potter.
Emily has built her life here after some terrible incidents in her past…which I won’t give away. She is outgoing, independent, and surrounded by friends. When she is attacked walking on the beach, I held my breath as Emily fought and survived ……because the author did her job and made me care about Emily. Doug, Frannie, Will and Trevor as friends, came alive with humor and distinct personalities. The local scenes, the ocean, bars, and shops all come together and create a community to visit and perhaps stay a while.
Dustin comes into the picture as a sarcastic, and prickly new neighbor of Emily that moves into her life because of threats she receives.
Good give and take between the couple keep the book realistic and the mystery brings them together.
You wonder if Dustin should be trusted as Emily does have good close friends. The fear of living with the doors locked and not knowing who to trust adds atmosphere as does the storms, fog, isolated landscape and Max, her old dog. When an old murder very similar to the one involving Emily, comes to light, the couple use their skillsto solve it. But why does Emily trust Dustin more then Will or Trevor? This book keeps you guessing right up to the end. I read this book in two days and enjoyed it immensely.
Never reading any book of this author I found myself wanting to read more by this author
Emily Burton is a sweet girl thrown into a world of fear that she never imagined to find in such a small & perfect island town. I loved Emily. I loved her innocence, yet strength. More so, I loved the way this story was written. It flowed beautifully from one scene to another. You really feel like you are there and in Emily’s shoes. Do not make the mistake of thinking you will know where this story goes. It’s twisted in such a good way that you won’t wanna stop reading! If you like murder mystery, this is your book!
Wow, rarely do I read a book in one sitting but once I started Legacy of Fear, I could not put it down. This fast paced thriller/suspense had me hooked to the end. I love trying to figure out who did the crime, but this book kept me guessing to the very end and boy was I wrong. If you love fast paced thriller/suspense, I highly recommend Legacy of Fear. Thank you to AJ McCarthy and Kate Rock Book Tours for a copy of this book and this is my honest review.
A mystery that stands apart from the rest!
Agatha Christie would have been proud.
A must-read for anyone who wants to be thrilled!
WOW is this an amazing read!
My first A.J. McCarthy novel and I am a fan! First of all, the story setting is absolutely beautiful and opens in the beautiful west coast of Vancouver Island. The juxtaposition of the beauty of the island, with the evil that is lurking, is a brilliant comparison. The suspense and suspicion that builds up makes for an edge of your seat read that kept me turning the pages to a satisfying and surprising ending.
I highly recommend this book.
Meh! It was ok. It had some weird historical twists that made for a surprising yet anti-climatic ending. I keep telling myself to start being more selective about what I choose to read and DNF stuff that just isn’t that interesting. If I could have given this story 2.5stars, I would have making my 3star rating pretty generous.
You know how it is when one of the main characters has you shaking your head at her decisions and you just want to shake some sense into them?? Well Emily is one of those characters. I mean she has good intentions and a hunger for information and closure which is enough to keep the story going. It’s a good mystery with plenty of twist and no you don’t easily figure out what and who until the very end. That in itself makes this a book worth recommending. The author gives you plenty of entertainment and reason to continue turning the pages all the way to the end.
