In Lisa Genova’s “New York Times” bestselling novel–and Academy Award-winning film–of resilience in the face of a devastating diagnosis, a vibrant mother in her thirties learns what matters most in life when a car crash leaves her with a traumatic brain disorder called “left neglect.” Sarah Nickerson, like any other working mom, is busy trying to have it all. One morning while racing to work … work and distracted by her cell phone, she looks away from the road for one second too long. In that blink of an eye, all the rapidly moving parts of her over-scheduled life come to a screeching halt. After a brain injury steals her awareness of everything on her left side, Sarah must retrain her mind to perceive the world as a whole. In so doing, she also learns how to pay attention to the people and parts of her life that matter most.

Who new anything about this condition before reading this book? Great read.
Reads with the ease of a novel but extremely factual about a human condition I had never encountered before I read this for a book club.
The narrator suffers a traumatic brain injury in a car accident. She is diagnosed with “left neglect”, a lack of awareness of everything to her left, including the left side of her body. The author is a neuro-scientist and does a marvelous job of describing the condition from Sarah’s point of view.
Fantastic book. Very insightful about someone’s perspective of left neglect from an Occupational therapist who has worked with many patient’s with variations of this condition.
Every book by this author is amazing. So much research goes into each book. The only author who can truly get inside of the person and help us understand what they are going through.
Knew nothing about Huntington’s Disease until I read this book. All of her books are informative and moving.
Lisa Genova is a favorite author. I always learn something about the brain in a unique way-through a family’s struggle with the disorder and their love for one another.
I had never heard of this medical condition. Great story, good characters. Informative.
So interesting. I like a book that teaches me something. That informs me about something that I previously knew nothing about. This author always does all of the above when she writes.
Our book club selected this one several years ago and our member reviewer was able to put her personal spin on the book as she related to the main character’s dilemma in that she was born blind in one eye. Very informative and well written by a talented author.
