While this is part of a series, I read it as a stand alone and got everything I needed out of it. There were no unanswered questions.
This kept me guessing right until the end. It was never obvious on who was behind it all. It really could be anyone. Very suspenseful!
Egan McCall is ending his day a little frustrated. Jordan Gentry’s day didn’t end much better. They’re going to take you on a bumpy ride so make sure you buckle up. This author certainly knows what’s going to grab her reader’s attention.
There’s plenty of mystery, suspense, and action. I’m putting in a warning here. Don’t jump ahead and sneak a peek at the ending – even though you may be tempted. You’ll just spoil the rest of the book for yourself. This book certainly fits under the Harlequin Intrigue brand because this book is all about the intrigue. Hearing the name Harlequin, you know it’s synonymous with romance.
But the intrigue has to come first here. There are lots of questions that keep coming up that need to be answered. I know you want the romance but our author gives you something to look forward to as the story develops. The mystery needs solving first before I want to see what’s going to happen personally between our main characters. At one point, I had to wonder if Dirty Harry was going to pop out from somewhere. He would be right at home – I could see a much younger Clint Eastwood being right in the thick of things.
The author had everything progress naturally. Nothing felt rushed or out of place. The character’s emotions also seemed natural. Forgiveness can take a while because you have to get past the pain first. But in true Harlequin fashion we get our happy ending. I love the thought of setting the mood as I read but with what Egan and Jordan had to deal with, I think enjoying their story from a comfortable chair is the best way to go.
I was not compensated nor was I required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own.
Just when you think and old wound is starting to heal, something comes along to reopen it. In the case of Sheriff Egan McCall, the injury that was Jordan Gentry is ripped wide open.
Since this was my first Delores Fossen novel, I wasn’t sure what to expect. Let me tell you, I definitely wasn’t prepared to be thrown headlong into the action on the very first page. From the moment you open the book until the last page, you are constantly on the run with Egan and Jordan. I loved how the story revolved around an organ donor and her recipients. For me, that was an interesting storyline, one I hadn’t read before. Considering what you have to go through to even get on a transplant list, I’m surprised that there aren’t more stories like this out there. The little twist of why the recipients were being targeted wasn’t something I had expected either.
Egan and Jordan’s back story was enjoyable as well. One of the downsides of living in a small town is that you can never truly get away from your past and these two know that first hand. It was also nice to see that the reason for Egan’s attitude towards Jordan made sense. I can’t imagine what it would be like to lose your fiancée and see her organ recipient regularly. That reminder of loss and pain would be overwhelming. Despite their antagonistic relationship, Egan and Jordan didn’t bicker relentlessly or needlessly. They did butt heads, but it was always with reason, never ‘just because’. Now, I love some good banter, even a little bickering, but when it does nothing for the story, it can get old fast. These two weren’t like that at all and it was a surprising change.
I enjoyed Lawman with a Cause so much that, as soon as I finished it, I got online and ordered the first two in the series so I can be ready to go when the last in the series releases next year. Time spent in McCall Canyon is time well spent, I’m beginning to see.
*thanks to Netgalley, Harlequin, and the author for a copy of this book in exchange for a fair and honest review.
love all her books can’t wait for the next one
This author I have seen around several years with interest but finally getting to put my nose in one of her novels. Boy was I missing out too with the way these are laid out and the characters that take you into their tale. In this one Sheriff Egan is the hunk that captures you along with having to watch out for Jordan. The build up in this one will quickly capture your interest with the drama fueling your movements. Disappear into this one as the relationship develops with you seeing and looking for clues. This is a bit of a second chance also with that helping get caught up quicker. Suspense and romance what better combination to get swept away in with characters that have the weight to carry you also.
An explosive, danger-filled story that kept me guessing and my heart pounding.
Delores Fossen has the talent to write suspense stories filled with up close and deadly non-stop action, with constant twists that keep the story raveling in a tangled spin, and the readers on the edge. I absolutely love it when my conclusions are proven wrong time and again, keeping me clued into the tale, making it unputdownable.
The suspense and romance stories are well built into the series so that the immediate threat is solved yet the constant deadly danger hang close by.
Sheriff Egan McCall and Jordan Gentry have convoluted past. What makes the current situation even more awkward is the burning attraction both of them still feel for each other. They have no room for distraction with their lives in peril, yet with each and every deadly attempt on their lives, the old feelings come closer to the surface, and the situation, emotions, attraction between them comes unavoidably force, that no one can ignore.
The speed of the events is high, and it feels like everything happen in one moment of deep inhale. The number of possible culprits keeps the situation jittery, not knowing who to trust or what motivates the killer puts everyone’s lives in danger, grinding the nerves, and honing the feels and hunches.
Another rapid-fire, edgy, and explosive romantic suspense tale from an author who knows how to keep readers hooked on the tale and wanting for more, I have an inkling the conclusion to the series will be as intense and explosive…
~ Four Spoons with a teaspoon on the side
I love a rough and rugged cowboy, so this one appealed to me. Egan does technically fit that bill, but that’s pretty much the best thing I found in this one. The romance is a second chance for Jordan and Egan, so I expected things to move quickly, but given the emotions between them in the beginning, this one moved at warp speed. It just doesn’t ring true. Not even a little bit. I mean, the animosity between them is enough that Jordan believes Egan capable of trying to kill her in the beginning, yet they’re moving in for a kiss in a matter of hours. Considering the level of Egan’s grief and pain, I don’t buy it. We also have a mystery to solve – who is actually trying to kill Jordan and why? Sadly, that was just as far-fetched as the romance for me. It’s pretty obvious from the beginning even with a handful of red herrings thrown in. It is a quick read, and there are some tense and exciting moments, but for me, the writing is rather simplistic, and the story is rushed and not at all believable.
Sheriff Egan McCall is on his way home when he sees a truck parked on the side of the road with its emergency lights flashing. He recognizes that truck. It belongs to his high school sweetheart, Jordan Gentry, the last person he expects to see by his ranch. She also happens to be the last person he wants to see. She brings back too many very bad memories of the day his fiancee was shot and killed.
Jordan Gentry is sitting on the ground with her back to the front fender of her truck, blood running down her sleeve, when she hears her name called and a light flashes in her eyes. She is holding her gun in one hand and her phone in the other. When she sees who is standing there she accuses Egan of trying to kill her. It looked like to her someone in a blue truck identical to Egan’s shot at her as that person passed her on the road. It seems that the people who received donated organs from Egan’s dead fiancee are being killed one by one. Jordan is one of those organ recipients. Egan knows he didn’t shoot at Jordan so it’s time to investigate and keep Jordan safe.
Lawman with a Cause by Delores Fossen is the third book in her Lawmen of McCall Canyon series. The series so far has been filled with lots of action and suspense. This story follows along that line as well. The author has written an inticate plot filled with many interesting characters. Delores Fossen always manages to write lots of fascinating intrigue into her stories. She is one of my favorite romantic sususpense authors.
