In this classic British mystery starring a sleuth who “has her place in detective fiction as surely as Lord Peter Wimsey or Hercule Poirot,” Miss Silver investigates a case of marital murder (Manchester Evening News). Lois has always dreamed of being a Latter. The Latter brothers are both so attractive—nearly as handsome as their stately manor, Latter End. After she spoils her relationship with … spoils her relationship with one brother, Lois succeeds with the other, winning his heart with her good looks and a sizeable fortune from her first marriage. But even after they’ve wed, she never quite fits in with the family. Still, she hardly expects them to kill her.
When the psychic Memnon warns her of murder by poison, Lois laughs it off and so does everyone else, but then, like clockwork, she’s dead. The weapon? Poison, of course. Only the brilliant governess-turned-detective Miss Maud Silver can solve this tantalizing case complicated by the bitterness that infests Latter End.

11th book in the series, and I really enjoyed the process of revealing who did it!
Miss Silver mysteries — an extensive cozy series to love — particularly for any readers interested in the period following the Great War (1st WW) through the Second World War in Britain. Fans of Foyle’s War and fans of Agatha Christie’s mysteries would likely enjoy this series as much as those, or possibly even more.
This was yet another really …
Classic Miss Silver
I had read the Miss Silvers a long, long time ago. I was glad to see some turn up in my book feed. This one was entertaining. The characters were mostly likeable, understandable. For fans of golden age fiction, this is a treat. I did not see the ending coming. Quite a surprise.
This eleventh book in the Miss Silver series is my second favorite (only the first in the series is better). Miss Silver and Frank Abbott share many scintillating conversations, but Miss Silver is still the star. Her insightfulness, understanding of human nature, and logic are unsurpassed as she sorts out the events at Latter End. The book has …
interesting characters and well written
Patricia Wentworth always tells a great story. If you like Agatha Christie you will love her books too
I have always liked the Patricia Wentworth books. I read this one for the second time after many years
liked it. I like historical fiction in the genre of Agatha Christie.
I love Patricia Wentworth! A contemporary of Agatha Christie, her murders are solved by the ladylike spinster Miss Silver.
Take a peak back in time in this cozy British mystery.
This is a very twisted case for Miss Silver. A man comes to see Miss Silver who thinks his wife is being poisoned. He has a large family mostly living in his family home, but after he marries his young wife she wants to change everything and they don’t like it. Her husband adores her, but she lies and connives to get everything she wants. Some …
I always love Patricia Wentworth and Miss Silver. I own many and reread often. Miss Silver is so typical of what we think of as a governess, even if she is now an ‘enquiry’ agent.
Great period novel. Love Miss Silver.
Enjoyed the NYC atmosphere.
I love these mysteries! Its like stepping into an old movie. The language the scenes are a fabulous escape.
I have enjoyed every one of Ms. Wentworth’s books I’ve read so far!
Very old fashioned but that is what I like!
As I was getting near the end I was Hoping I had the solution figured right. But couldn’t be sure. I was right. My guess was really based on how I wanted it to end. I like Patricia Wentworth VERY much & would like to read ALL her books,, I’ve read quite a few.
Ah, Patricia Wentworth – what can I say about this wonderful writer. Her books are always great reads featuring Miss Maud Silver a retired governess and teacher turned private investigator. Miss Silver’s access to the best homes and quoting of Tennyson makes this series far more enjoyable. Alas, there are no writers of this caliber today but we …
This is a classic Patricia Wentworth book, with the excellent writing I expect from her. The story is original, although, if you have read other Wentworth books, there are similarities. I love losing myself in another era with a good mystery and some romance thrown in. Miss Silver is always a pleasure.
