A missing woman cold case falls into the senior sleuths’ laps. Only this time, the helpful detective Marci must bow out when a letter addressed to the police names the woman’s husband as the possible culprit, which turns the cold case into an active investigation. This is unfortunate for the sleuths because things were heating up on the case and at Greener Pastures Convalescent Center where … Heloise has promised an authentic barn dance for the residents. The sleuths have been ordered to drop the case, which should have been the end of things. It isn’t. Not only are the senior sleuths very good at solving crimes, they’re also great at being sneaky. Who would suspect a sweet old lady or a jovial grandfather? Will the sleuths be able to solve the case in time to stage the barn dance?

Fantastic book and Well Written. Easy to read and I didn’t want to put it down. This book was so funny and whimsical that I laughed and laughed so hard. I highly recommend it. Go buy it and review it. You’ll Love this book. Will read again and have.
A feisty group of senior sleuths to the rescue!
The story revolves around five amateur senior sleuths who are residents of the Greener Pastures Convalescent Center. But don’t discount the energy and abilities of these senior citizens! They are known to assist the police in solving cold cases. So, they begin working a new cold case with Lance and Marci (a detective recovering from a severe injury she received while on-the-job). Just when the senior sleuths were getting their plan together to solve this cold case, Logan breaks the news to them that it is no longer a cold case due to the fact that a “missing letter” has come to light. Oh no! Logan advises the group they will have to back off as it is now an active police investigation. To add to their list of obstacles, a couple of the senior sleuths are snookered into organizing a barn dance for the residents of Greener Pastures Convalescent Center. In addition, they are forced to find creative ways to sneak out of the home for their investigation as some of the sleuthing team are not permitted outside the center. The senior sleuths are bound and determined to solve this case of a missing wife who vanished after emptying the couple’s bank account. Did she run or did her husband have something to do with her disappearance? Could her ex-husband be involved? This sleuthing team are very entertaining in the hijinks they employ to solve this case which turns violent before it is all said and done.
I really enjoyed this story and plan to read more of ‘The Way Over the Hill Gang’ series. If you enjoy reading a good cozy mystery, then grab a copy of this book now.
I received an advance reader’s copy of this book; but this review is my voluntary and honest opinion.
The latest Senior Sleuths mystery focuses on Eunice, the abrasive woman who forced her way into the group. It delves into her past — her father told her to laugh at other kids’ jokes and offer an occasional compliment, while her mother encouraged her to accept the first marriage proposal she received, since another wasn’t likely, and her late husband had enjoyed reminding her of that. So she takes charge of the newest investigation — a missing wife — and shrug responsibility for planning a square dance onto Herman’s shoulders.
Lance’s neighbor, Robert Simmons, reported his wife missing a while back, but there’s been no sign of her, and he mentioned it to Lance in hopes of reactivating the case. He and Marci, as police officers, can’t officially investigate, so they turn it over to the Senior Sleuths.
They prowl the neighborhood, Eunice and Gus presenting themselves as representatives of a local church. Other than gossip, no one garners any information; worse, when they get back to Greener Pastures, Lance and Marci tell them the case is closed and their involvement is over, without explanation. Not that the sleuths accept that — Eunice eventually prods her fellow senior detectives into another neighborhood canvass, but this time when they leave, they find they’re not only being followed, but a gun barrage ensues, peppering Herman’s beloved car with bullet holes.
In between the action, Eunice adopts a stray kitten, but another resident, Pearl, who makes Eunice look meek, grabs Domino while he’s on walkabout and claims him for herself. Having worked with the bossy woman on the barn dance committee, which she resumed at Gus’s suggestion, Eunice resents her, but also respects her sharp elbows, and they reluctantly agree to share him.
And the barn dance is a huge success, themed “The Cat’s Pajamas.” Lance and Marci attend together, inching a little closer romantically now that Marci has been released from rehab and returned home. Eunice worries that this may signal the end of the Senior Sleuths, but Lola is optimistic. Time will tell.
M.K. Scott has written another fun book about the senior sleuths. The author does a great job of bringing the characters and their actions to life within a senior center. The storyline is good and easy to follow. I enjoyed it.
I loved this book, as I have loved all the ones in this series. This book is written from the point of view of Eunice and tells how she perceives everything. The case involves a missing woman, but an apparently lost letter suggests that her husband may have killed her. Although detectives Lance and Marci originally asked the senior sleuths to help, they had later been asked not to pursue the case. Of course the seniors didn’t listen and got themselves into all sorts of trouble. The story keeping the reader engrossed all the way from beginning to end.
M.K. Scott always creates the best stories and this one is no exception. Those of you who have read the authors fabulous Painted Inn series will be delighted to know Herman and his friends are back!
With a great gang of characters and a hilarious plot this book will have you forgetting everything you should be doing. Solving cold cases is what keeps this merry little band of friends young at heart but this time the case might not be so cold… Throw in a darling cat and you have the perfect cozy mystery.
I received a free ARC copy of this book but this is my own honest review.
Love the senior sleuths and the mishaps they get involved in. The back story on Eunice explains her attitude and crotchetiness . Hope this series wont stop with Marcie going home. I was given a free ARC by the author. My review is freely and honestly given
I fell in love with these jaunty ladies and gents as they went about their very entertaining quest to locate a missing person as well as maintain their credibility and reputations (and sweethearts!) at the senior citizens centre where they have to tackle life problems such as organizing a barn dance and teaching their fellow seniors how to square dance. Add an illicit stray cat into the mix and a whole lot of hilarity ensues. I read this book as a free ARC but this is my voluntary and honest review.
Absolutely delightful. If I ever need to live in a convalescent center, I hope to find these folks in residence. The writing is fresh and skillful. The plot is tight and multi-layered, and the characters are well drawn and believable. I received this book free and chose to make a voluntary, unbiased review.
I just love the Senior Sleuths! There’s never a dull moment when Eunice, Lola, Gus, Herman, and Jake are on the case. They may be older adults but their imagination and sleuthing abilities rival much younger people! You can’t stop laughing at their sneaking around like kids sneaking out of the house! Such a fun read!
” Late for Square Dancing- (The Way Over the Hill Gang – Book 4) ” by M.K. Scott is a tale of Senior Sleuths who while they may reside at the Greener Pastures Convalescent Center….there is nothing that is “out to pasture” about this group. These feisty seniors saddle up to solve a rapidly warming “cold case” …just in time for the authentic barn dance…and when maturity mandates using brains rather than brawn …outthinking criminals works to these seniors advantage…especially when retaining enough energy for “square dancing” at the hoe-down is critical …and why these Senior Sleuths solve crimes as a group…each member deploying their best efforts …to put the perp or perps in the local poky …Wanna know what tactics they employ?!? Read and see! Much enjoyed and Highly Recommended. I voluntarily reviewed an Advanced Copy of this book.
Marci and Lance have another cold case for the Senior Sleuths. This case involves a missing woman who is the wife of one of Lance’s neighbors, Robert Simmons. The case was brought back to light due to a letter, supposedly from Loretta Simmons, which said if anything happened to her, her husband would be responsible. This is one case the Senior Sleuths will be working on their own, since Lance and Marci have a conflict of interest, which prevents them from working the case.
As if the Senior Sleuths didn’t have enough to keep them busy, the Activities Director at Greener Pastures has asked Eunice to help organize a Barn Dance! Eunice feels she is up to the task and enlists the help of the other sleuths to pull it off.
What happened to Loretta? Is she dead or did she just run away? Can the Senior Sleuths uncover the truth?
M K Scott has another winner with this Way Over the Hill Gang Mystery. The characters and the situations they get themselves into are wonderfully written and the reader can easily picture themselves as one of the Senior Sleuths.
I hope this series continues for a long time.
The senior residents of the Greener Pastures Convalescent Center have a new case and they are eager to put their talents together to find a missing and possibly murdered woman. However, they are suddenly pulled off the case by the recovering detective, Marcy, and her partner, Lance. Not surprisingly, the team decides to surreptitiously continue their investigations and what follows is an exciting, entertaining and dangerous caper. Eunice juggles planning a barn dance and trying to keep her new cat a secret with her natural tendency to want to be in charge of the group. There are plenty of laughs and a touch of romance. I love these active seniors, who refuse to be marginalized even though they are often discounted by society. Long live the Senior Sleuths!
Getting older doesn’t change your personality, but it can irritate you to be stereo typed by younger people. Together five senior citizens help a detective in assisted living while recuperating from injuries solve cold cases. Humorous and entertaining, this is an enjoyable read of five distinct personalities trying to solve crimes by ‘committee’ with one vehicle between them.
This was a great story. It kept me interested. It was also so nice to see the change in Eunice. That was a GREAT surprise ending. Thanks
I love The Way Over the Hill Gang. They do some of their best work in Late for Square Dancing. These well developed older sleuths each have their own strength that they apply to the cases. This one is not a cold case – just a missing person. In this well written book, the sleuths continue working even after they are told to stop. If you love older characters and a great mystery, be sure to read this book! I highly recommend it.
Eunice is a little bossy, and that makes it hard for the other members of the senior amateur sleuths to warm up to her.
The sleuths live at Greener Pastures Convalescent Center, and they are bound and determined to solve a case of a missing woman. Lance and Marci can’t get involved in the case, so it’s up to the senior sleuths to figure out what happened to Loretta.
Things get a little hairy, and there are plenty of twists that will have you trying to figure out what happened to Loretta.
An enjoyable read that has a lot of laugh out loud scenes in it. Loved this book!
