The main characters in this story are an ex-soldier Luca Meza, who has left the army to come back home to look after his dying father Peter, and his former fiancé Olisa Dalien, who stayed in town and now works as a neonatal nurse practitioner. They were together from the age of thirteen, until after his basic training, when he expected her to follow him away from home, as he wanted nothing more than to get away from his father and his past, and she wanted to stay where all the people she loved and all her family lived. Shortly after she broke up with him, she fell pregnant from a one night stand and now has a four year old son called Cam. Luca didn’t speak to her for a year after she told him this, but they managed to become friends again after that, but nothing as close as they used to be.
She offers to pick him up from the station when he makes his return, but he is then busy looking out for his father and after his hardware shop. Peter had always questioned whether Luca was ready to be with Olisa years before, saying they hadn’t had time apart to test their love, as they were always together! The story rocks back and forth, between the current day and their past times together. They are both older and have different things for them to focus on. Now, as the attraction still flares up between the two, they need to see if they can make a go of it again and if they now have the same dreams and where that will be. The added problem of Cam’s birth father suddenly turning up on the scene, brings a small complication to their bond.
A nice short story of two teenage lovers who weren’t grown up enough to truly know what they wanted for the future and how to do that together, have come back together under tragic circumstances, to find their love has never truly dimmed for each other. Now that have to find out if their love can be a last kind of love. The relationship Olisa kept between herself and Luca’s dad, over the years of his absence, with the addition of her son Cam, bring some light to Peter’s dying days and an ease in Luca’s relationship with the father he never thought he could please in his youth. An enjoyable tale, cut a little short, which could have done with being longer as usual. I received an ARC copy of this book from BookSprout and I have freely given my own opinion of the book above.
This second chance romance had me hooked from the very beginning with the good storyline and well rounded characters!
This is a really sweet story about two teenagers who are inseparable until one decides to enlist in the army leaving the other behind. When they find each other they both realize that the time and distance hasn’t changed how much they love each other. It’s very well written and tells the backstory as their relationship is rekindled. The characters are likable and have some depth to them.
