Crazy Rich Asians meets Bridget Jones’s Diary in this funny and irresistible debut novel about the pursuit of happiness, surviving one’s thirties intact, and opening oneself up to love.At thirty-three, Andrea Tang is living the dream: She has a successful career as a lawyer, a posh condo, and a clutch of fun-loving friends who are always in the know about Singapore’s hottest clubs. All she has to … Singapore’s hottest clubs. All she has to do is make law partner, and her life will be perfect. And if she’s about to become the lone unmarried member of her generation in the Tang clan–a disappointment her meddling Chinese-Malaysian family won’t let her forget–well, she doesn’t need a man to complete her.
Yet when a chance encounter with charming, wealthy entrepreneur Eric Deng offers her a glimpse of an exciting, limitless future, Andrea decides to give Mr. Right-for-her-family a chance. Too bad Suresh Aditparan, her office rival and the last man her family would approve of, keeps throwing a wrench in her plans. Now Andrea can’t help but wonder: In the endless tug-of-war between pleasing others and pleasing herself, is there room for everyone to win?

So much fun. If you enjoyed Bridget Jones, this is even better – funny, and snarky and the perfect escape.
It’s been a long time since a book got me laughing out loud and cheering for the heroine this much.
Andrea Tang is completely relatable as a professional in her thirties with a lot going for her, but also dealing with the conditional love of her family who want to know why she hasn’t yet married an eligible man and popped out babies. Add in fierce competition for that precious partnership opportunity at work, some fun friendships, and the horrors of millennial dating, and an absolute gem of a book!
The diary format fits the story perfectly and let me indulge in giggling non-stop at Andrea’s inner monologue. One of the absolute best books released in 2020. This is also a story type that lends itself super well, to the audio format (which I listened to).
Loved, loved, loved it!
Crisp and funny with a stellar voice, Last Tang Standing is a treat. Andrea is a relatable protagonist whose dry wit and penchant for sarcasm won me over. I sympathized with her dating travails and was gripped from the first page, delighted along the way by modern references and sharp humor that gave the book a timely feel with serious Millennial energy.
Quick read. Predictable outcome. A few good laughs
Very entertaining
Book 115 towards my goal of 290! 4/5 stars for this adult contemporary romance. Pitched as Crazy Rich Asians meets Bridget Jones, and it delivers! I love seeing all the family dynamics. The ups and downs of possibly online dating. Trying the “old fashioned” way of finding a date. Funny and quirky. It is a tad long, but definitely recommend.
A hilarious transcontinental romp filled with characters that crackle off the page. Lauren Ho’s incisive, sharp voice lays bare one of the central questions in many professional women’s lives — is everything we give up to live a ‘good life’ worth it?
Last Tang Standing is hilarious, even though it deals with serious topics such as family, romantic relations and how women maintain our work-life balance. It is rare to find a funny and witty Asian female author and for that I truly appreciate Lauren Ho’s ability to write against the image of Asian women as being submissive, obedient and dependent on men. But Last Tang Standing is not just a novel about Asian women, it is a universal story about women everywhere as we fight for our personal happiness, love and respect.
Last Tang Standing is a fun, funny, addictive adventure starring a loveable heroine with impeccable taste in handbags (if not men). Relatable and romantic, Andrea Tang will have you nodding along and shaking your head in equal measure as she tries to balance friends, family, romance and her career. A perfect summer page-turner from Lauren Ho, I loved it.
A smart and witty depiction of navigating the world of dating, coupled with the messy (but amusing) dynamics of family life.
This book is an absolute delight. Andrea Tang is the protagonist that we all need to remind us of the complications of navigating our thirties. Lauren Ho’s fresh voice brings humour and heart to the glittering, fast-paced landscape of Singapore.
Both joyfully entertaining and socially perceptive, Lauren Ho’s debut is a vivid read on dating, work and family in Singapore through the lens of a brutally honest protagonist of gold. I loved it.
Joyful, exuberant and very funny. An absolute treat.
Your new favorite singleton is here and her name is Andrea Tang! Lauren Ho’s irresistible Last Tang Standing sparkles with that perfect match of hilarity and heart on every page. Smart, successful, driven lawyer-on-the-partner-track Andrea is the most endearing of heroines: trying to be a boss in her love life as she stumbles — uproariously! — through Singapore’s dating world in search of Mr. Right. You’ll fall in love with this warm, witty and winning tale of a woman learning to follow her heart — not her head — for the first time in her life!
The funniest rom-com I’ve read in a very long time… The writing is so slick, the characters are so real, the pacing is so perfect! Andrea stole my heart.
After a chapter, the immediate tagline that came to mind was “ Bridget Jones’ Diary” meets “Crazy Rich Asians.” I didn’t read it because of that. I’m always curious about how Asian women navigate in between their culture and the modern world. It took me such a long time to find my place, and I’m not even sure I’m there yet. There’s so much pressure on how we have to succeed in every domain and keep the tradition. Andrea is struggling, and we follow her on this bumpy road.
Truth in advertising! The blurb describes this book as Crazy Rich Asians meets Bridget Jones Diary and that’s exactly right. Over the top lifestyle in Singapore.
4.5/5
Last Tang Standing by Lauren Ho was loved by a friend of mine whom I trust, so I decided I had to read it too and I am so happy I did!! This book was absolutely hilarious, and I really liked a lot of the characters. The audio is outstanding, and I loved Catherine Ho’s narration of it. She made the perfect narrator and I was excited to see she has voiced a ton of books! She brought Andrea (our main character) to life for me, and I laughed so hard at so many points in the book. Don’t worry, there are also serious topics in this one as well, and I definitely think I got a bit of a look into Andrea’s Chinese-Malaysian heritage as well.
I loved Lauren Ho’s writing style so much, and I have a hard time believing this is a debut novel. It was so perfectly executed, and the writing flowed wonderfully. I especially loved the “about the author” section, and you can tell just from that that this author has a great sense of humor. I had so much fun listening to this one and I can’t wait to see what she writes next. Whatever it is, I hope Catherine Ho is the narrator again. Last Tang Standing will definitely be one of my favorite debuts from 2020!
Literally laugh out loud hilarious at times with a wonderful sort of enemies-to-lovers romance.
Branded as a combination of Crazy Rich Asians and Bridget Jones’ Diary, plus a super cute illustrated cover, I was SO excited to read this book. Sadly, I was disappointed. This book felt LONG and not in a good way. More like a slog to get through where I was counting down the pages until it was over. The story was… fine. Our heroine, Andrea is a 33 yo attorney yo for partner and struggling to find love all while her family is breathing down her neck about settling down and having children. I felt there were numerous aspect’s of Andrea’a character I could relate to, and the descriptions of her job were extremely well done, but then there are moments where the scene seems so immensely strange or out of place and wow she drinks a lot especially on weekdays. When I was about halfway done I was really wishing I was more like 80% done. It just drags. The details provided don’t enhance the story like they do in Crazy Rich Asians and it’s not as tongue-in-cheek… it’s almost just sad. This book just wasn’t what I was hoping it could be.
Loved it. I liked the way the relationship with her mother changed during the course of the book. Linda was a great friend and just hilarious. Just a fun, feel good book. Andrea was quite the drinker which lead to some really funny situations. This book puts a big smile on your face. Enjoy.
