“For sheer adventure L’Amour is in top form.”—Kirkus Reviews Here is the kind of authentically detailed epic novel that has become Louis L’Amour’s hallmark. It is the compelling story of U.S. Air Force Major Joe Mack, a man born out of time. When his experimental aircraft is forced down in Russia and he escapes a Soviet prison camp, he must call upon the ancient skills of his Indian forebears … of his Indian forebears to survive the vast Siberian wilderness. Only one route lies open to Mack: the path of his ancestors, overland to the Bering Strait and across the sea to America. But in pursuit is a legendary tracker, the Yakut native Alekhin, who knows every square foot of the icy frontier—and who knows that to trap his quarry he must think like a Sioux.

This was my first L’Amour book many years ago and it got me hooked. Man’s struggle against man and nature. A very good read.
I have never read a book by this author that didn’t grab my interest in the first chapter and never lost interest throughout the book.
if you expect Siberia to kill your enemy, choosing a Native American (or whatever politically-correct term you prefer) who was raised learning the old ways in one of the most inhospitable places in North America probably isn’t going to be too successful.
Sending a hunter out after him may make for a nice cat-and-mouse scenario, but who is the cat and who the mouse?
Louis L’Amour wrote an awful lot of westerns set in the old west and before that made his reputation. This book is set in what was then the contemporary USSR — but it is one of his best.
One of LaMour’s very best! And it’s not a western! Seriously, Lamour is one of my favorite authors, and this is right at the top of the heap of his collected works.
Hard to stop reading. Easy read.
One of my favorite authors and this book is a very favorite!
Superb tale of fortitude and adventure by an excellent author.
I enjoyed this by Mr. A’mour. The only thing is as usual his endings are as though, he reached his page count, and he is done.
Loved it .
Although Louis L’Amour usually writes western, some of his best books are not western. This one has a good, different plot from many books. Well written and interesting.
One of the most interesting books I’ve read in a long time. I had forgotten who the author was and when I finished, I looked and as usual L’Amour kept me on my toes the whole time. Hard to put down!
Simply outstanding
I consider this one of the authors greatest books! It is action packed from start to finish, has many survival lessons in its pages and wraps up nicely in the end. In this book you will be cheering for the Indian to win.
Enjoyed enjoyed readtng this book
Too much repetition.
Great story
The very best of his books!
I appreciated the way the main character, Joe, saw the world. And I appreciated his fierce drive to survive. It’s a great read, though it could’ve done with a little trimming so that the same survival point and/or character observation isn’t made three separate times.
When Joe is spirited away to a hidden Russian prison camp, he teaches his captors that it takes more than a barren, frozen wilderness to secure against escape.
My first Louis L’amour. One of his atypical stories. It was an excellent read, which deserves more than one read through.
Was a Action packed and wonderful wording to draw you in.
