“For sheer adventure L’Amour is in top form.”—Kirkus Reviews Here is the kind of authentically detailed epic novel that has become Louis L’Amour’s hallmark. It is the compelling story of U.S. Air Force Major Joe Mack, a man born out of time. When his experimental aircraft is forced down in Russia and he escapes a Soviet prison camp, he must call upon the ancient skills of his Indian forebears … of his Indian forebears to survive the vast Siberian wilderness. Only one route lies open to Mack: the path of his ancestors, overland to the Bering Strait and across the sea to America. But in pursuit is a legendary tracker, the Yakut native Alekhin, who knows every square foot of the icy frontier—and who knows that to trap his quarry he must think like a Sioux.

This is my favorite Non-Sackett book by Louis Lamour. Simple plot of American test pilot captured by Soviet Union, escapes prison and tries to make his way back to USA, while hunted by military and intelligence offices. The prison is Siberia and the prisoner is a modern Sioux Warrior. It’s just a great story. The last page – priceless!
Survival novel. Lot of action.. I loved the ending. The Walking Drum is also a non western book by Louis L’Amour and it is great too.
Such an original story. Really enjoyed the thrill of the hunt.
fantastic book! loved every minute of it! I was sad when it ended!
a great book
very fast moving
Great read!
Love Mack and his ingenuity and resourcefulness. One of my favorite all time books.
read nearly all of his books.
I was a bit skeptical about a book set in Russia, but I had decided to get all Zane Grey’s books because the first few were so intriguing. This book did not disappoint. It is wonderful and follows his penchant for plot twists.
As all of his books are, this was a fantastic read.
Good story, fast moving, action packed
Interesting setting and characters. The main character was a little over the top but it was a good read.
I so wish this incredible author had lived long enough to write ore of the main character. So many more stories were begging to be told.
I have been fan of the L’Amour for decades. Love this books.
Left wanting a sequel.
Having hunted in Russia I found the descriptions of the environment very believable. An interesting blend of outdoor skills from 1800’s with modern equipment dueling against it Easy read for anyone who likes the outdoors.
A great Cold War story. Red riskiest take on Native American and get scalped. As good or better than authors westerns
A great read. Like a traditional western set in the 20th century.
I would recommend this book to any person that likes realistic characters in real world situations requiring both thought and actions. A truly awesome read!
