Birmingham, Alabama, has lost all power. Its streets are jammed with cars that won’t start, its airport engulfed in flames from burning planes. All communications–cell phones, computers, even radios–are silent. Every home and business is dark. Is it a natural disaster . . . a terrorist attack . . . or something far worse? In the face of a crisis that sweeps an entire high-tech planet back to a … back to a time before electricity, the Branning family faces a choice. Will they hoard their possessions in order to survive–or trust God to provide as they share their resources with those around them? Yesterday’s world is gone. Family and community are all that remain. And the outage is revealing the worst in some.
Desperation can be dangerous when a killer lives among them.
New York Times bestselling suspense author Terri Blackstock weaves a masterful what-if novel in which global catastrophe reveals the darkness in human hearts–and lights the way to restoration for a self-centered world.
“Blackstock is absolutely masterful at bringing spiritual dilemmas to the surface and allowing readers to wrestle with them alongside her characters.” —RT Book Reviews, 4.5 stars (of Dawn’s Light)

Excellent reading by author
I read Last Light years ago when it first came out. It’s not inconeivable that the scenario at the heart of this story could one day happen. Even with the craziness of the world today during the COVID-19 crisis, we are having to learn to adapt to a drastic change in how we live. This series provides hope, encouragement, and insights on how God can work through the most difficult times to bring us closer together.
Reading this book during the Covid-19 crisis probably wasn’t a good idea, but maybe it was. Times of crisis force us to think through things, deciding whether makeup and hairdryers are essential or not, finding ways to be resourceful when expectations fail–like electricity, transportation, even being able to communicate. They also are occasions to step back and ponder how best to spend our time and efforts in our corner of the universe.
Terri Blackstock explores these ideas with compelling characters–although obnoxious and spoiled at the beginning–and authentic dilemmas, heightened by local thefts and murders. There’s also a Reading Group Guide at the back, so groups of readers can discuss how these things might play out in real life.
Riveting!!!! Incredible series of books about a worldwide upheaval that you couldn’t have believed until now. Faith and community bring people together and carry them through.
This is my favorite series by Terri Blackstock so far! The story really pulled me in.
Fabulous series about what can happen to society when all the conveniences we know go out. The effects the outage causes on society are quite real in the sense of unknown. Just like in real life, we encounter shallow people who would rather steal and fight than work for their own. It makes you wonder how the Amish do it, and will give you greater respect for their lifestyle.
A book to make you re-examine life. What is important? Great story teller.
When I first started this book I had no idea about life without all the comforts of this modern world. I love the way the author brought all of these characters together through hardship, tragedy and the strength they found in themselves and how to pull together with hot started out as strangers
The Branning Family has found themselves stuck in the suburbs with no modern convinces. The entire world has been hit, and nothing electric works. But even worse, there’s a killer in their neighborhood. This Christian novel grabbed me, and I loved it. Unfortunately, the characters were a bit shallow.
I’d read another book (“One Second After”) where an EMP (electro-magnetic pulse) throws the U.S. into disarray. This one is a bit different as it has a more religious angle and is a bit more hopeful. It also involves a murder mystery as do the two later books in the trilogy.
Make sure you have books 2,3,and 4 on hand and don’t expect to get any work done!
The end has come! Back to basics before electricity! Thought provoking. What if that really did happen to us!? How would we handle it! Mystery. Love. And learning to make a difference!
