I loved this book. This is author is fast becoming one of my favorite authors. I read this book in one sitting and couldn’t put it down once I started it. This was an emotional roller coaster ride for sure. I felt for the characters as well as them bring the story to life. Charlie has been through so much and has a heart of gold but that could come back to haunt her. You don’t want to miss the twists and turns as it kept me turning pages. Just when I thought I knew what was what, bam, another twist. I dont regret picking up this book and neither will you. A must read.
This stand-alone novella introduces the character of defense attorney Charlotte “Charlie” Quinn and the others who will participate in this series. The plot is clever and grabbed my attention in its novelty. A good quick read for mystery lovers!
Love anything Karen Slaughter writes
Charlotte and Samantha Quinn’s family life was torn apart by an attack on their family home. It left their mother dead and their father a notorious defense attorney devastated. Years later Charlotte would follow in her father’s footsteps to become a lawyer herself.
As the good daughter, Charlie wants to help everyday people who found themselves in bad places and didn’t have anyone else qualified enough to get them out of trouble. One difference between her and her father is the code she follows. Charlie wants to be a good clean lawyer not a dirty lawyer. Charlie was honest, fair, friendly, and helpful.
Flora Faulkner was a fifteen year old girl being raised by her grandparents. When Charlie speaks at a Girl Scout meeting Flora approaches her for help. Flora wants help getting emancipated from her grandparents. Flora’s an honor student and a Girl Scout. She just wants to go to college and not live with drug dealing grandparents.
Charlie finds herself in a dangerous situation as she tries to help Flora.
Overall:
Last Breath is the prequel to The Good Daughter. The Good Daughter was one of those books that had an appealing cover, a good premise, and a great title, yet I didn’t find this prequel very entertaining.
The writing style isn’t grabbing my attention. Although, I do like Charlie’s law knowledge. That one scene was great. Karin’s writing style doesn’t line up with my ideal expectations for a great story.
This was a short stand-alone story introducing readers into Charlie’s world as a lawyer.
This was a great short mystery story. The characters were well developed as was the story line. I liked the twists at the end that I didn’t predict. Kept my attention and makes me want to read more by Karin Slaughter. Worth the time to listen or read.
A short story or novella, but as powerful as any of the full-length books. She doesn’t write horror stories, per se, but about people who produce horror with their lives on the people around them. Highly recommended!
Quick read about Charlie (Charlotte) Quinn, a small town lawyer who is asked by a young girl to help her emancipate from her grandparents. Charlie is sucked in, especially since the girl, Flora, pulls on Charlie’s heartstrings by relating her story about losing her mom just like Charlie lost her own mother.
Charlie’s husband, Ben-an ADA, is also awaiting news from the cops about a drug bust.
These two cases cross over and come to an explosive conclusion.

What a wonderfully crafted book! I had already read The Good Daughter, the sequel to this novella, but it did not affect my appreciation of this book. The author does a great job of developing the characters and setting up the story.
And like the main character, Charlotte Quinn, you begin to wonder what’s really going on with Flora. How far is Charlotte willing to go to protect Flora … and does she want to put forth the effort.
there are not many books that i do not finish but this one got on my nerves. you can see it is a writer who knows the craft of words. too many words and so little happen, a shallow plot. there was a point i thought the book will wake up, when she describes crooked grandparents. you could see the writer. a waste.
Last Breath is actually a short story that establishes the characters for the Good Daughter. Karin managed to weave a lot of details into the story that contributed to the ending. It didn’t take long for me to identify with Charlie, Rusty and Ben. Charlie is my kind of girl. She will go to the mat for her client but don’t BS her. I felt a little short changed by the ending.
Charlotte “Charlie” Quinn is a twenty-something struggling lawyer. She and her husband have agreed that they want a family but feel that it’s best to wait until they have more of their debt paid down — student loans, car loans, etc. before thinking of starting a family. Only problem with that is Charlie may be pregnant now. Rather than focus on her possible pregnancy, she turns her attention to what initially seems like a slam-dunk case for emancipation by a Girl Scout and supposedly straight-A honor student, Florabama “Flora” Faulkner. The only problem with that is Charlie is taking everything Flora says at face value without doing any due diligence. When her client is arrested and others begin to poke and prod into Flora’s life, what is uncovered is definitely more than Charlie was counting on. The question soon becomes just how far is too far when it comes to protecting a client?
Last Breath by Karin Slaughter is a quick read and one that has just as many twists and turns as her full-length reads. This might be a short read but it packs a powerful punch. Charlie Quinn is missing her mother and comes across a teenager girl that also lost a mother and is need of legal counsel. Is it possible that Charlie is too focused on the similarities between herself and Flora to notice the huge problems with Flora’s story? Is it possible that Charlie is being played by this teenager or is there something more sinister at work? No, I’m not going to tell you the answer to any of those questions, read the book! If you enjoy well-crafted mysteries, then you’ll definitely want to grab a copy of Last Breath to read. I’ve read and enjoyed everything Ms. Slaughter has written, including Last Breath, and I’m looking forward to finding out what happens next with Charlie Quinn in The Good Daughter.
Last Breath is a prequel to The Good Daughter. It tells Charlotte (Charlie) Quinn’s story in 2004, after her mother’s murder, but 13 years before the happenings in The Good Daughter. It introduces us to some of the important secondary characters: Ben Bernard (Charlie’s husband), Rusty Quinn (her dad) and his secretary Lenore. It is a fast-paced short story of deceit, betrayal, lost innocence and murder, with twists that sadden and shock. An entertaining prequel where no one is quite who or what they seem to be.
I love everything Karin Slaughter writes! This was no exception. She makes you believe that you know the characters. You are pulled in from the first page, and carried along until the last page. A great read!
Another great story from Karin Slaughter. I’m always waiting for her next one.
Last Breath is a fairly short novella marketed as the prequel to Karin Slaughter’s August 2017 new release: The Good Daughter. If the purpose of this prequel was to get readers eager and ready for the main attraction then job well-done! It’s emotional, meaningful, intriguing, thrilling, innocent, dark, and shocking. It does not feel like a short-story. It is a full open and close experience in my opinion. My jaw is still dropped. I’m ready! Thanks Ms. Slaughter!
My favorite quote:
“Be useful.”
As always, Karin Slaughter is a master. However, buyer beware. It was only a short novella, which I didn’t know when I purchased. Wish this had been more prominently posted so I didn’t waste my money.
Will read ANY Karen Slaughter book. She’s a wonderful writer.
Love Karin Slaughter, can’t wait until the release of The Good Daughter.
Short. A prequel to her next novel.
