The conclusion of the Floating World segment of Scions of the Black Lotus. The ringleader of a rebellion has holed up with his allies in an unassailable castle, and it is up to Jie, Tian, and other members of the Black Lotus clan’s Floating World cell to assassinate him.
In this last instalment of the Scions of the Black Lotus series, we get to the long-awaited conclusion – everything that explains what really happened, back when Lilian decided to betray Jie and the Black Lotus Clan. And boy, is it well-thought-out!
Just as fast-paced and well-written as the previous books, Last Bloom of the Jade Lotus is entertaining from start to finish, with even more twists and turns you wouldn’t expect. Here, we continue on the path of non-stop flashbacks, but they are so well-done, seamlessly integrated into the story that it’s easy to follow, and adds immensely to the series as a whole. Things are revealed, which explains the earlier books (especially the first), and you get a whole new sense of what has happened.
It is hard to rehash the story without spoiling, so I will merely say this: Last Bloom of the Jade Lotus is a fantastic last book, and the series is absolutely wonderful! Even more fabulous is the narrator, done by Natalie Naudus. I highly recommend this series to all fantasy lovers, especially those who like Asian Fantasy. It’s great!
Brilliant story with layers of manipulation and plotting. It has superb action, is very well written, has wonderful world-building and an amazing set of characters. Told in a series of well executed flash backs, history is revealed in a new light and overarching plot is slowly revealed. This author is a master of plots within plots and this book weaves all the multiple threads and schemes together to form a satisfying conclusion that was impossible to predict. The narrator, Natalie Naudus, once again did an excellent job of bringing the characters and story to life with great tempo shifts, intonation and vocal inflection. This whole series has been absolutely fantastic, but this novella blows them all the prior ones away. These books do need to be read in sequence to be able to experience the full brilliance of this story.
Tears will be shed. There are so many layers to this series, I really believe a re read will be necessary just to completely absorb all the nuances of these characters and the story that has been shared. So much depth of emotions, so much pain and injustice. The ending is….brilliant. I find myself at a loss for words. All my reviews are always voluntarily written.
This was a whirlwind finale to an action-packed series. While the previous book was mostly told in a series of flashbacks, this book brought us back to the present while revealing flashbacks to book one in the series – this time from Lilian’s perspective. I didn’t expect the story to come full circle and thought the planning and the writing were brilliantly done. Each book has ended on a note that surprised me and this one was no different.
While the flashback scenes were nicely done, the scenes in the present time were less action and more talk, similar to the previous book. I found myself wanting to rush through those and get back to Lilian’s version of the story. So much of it was not what it had seemed the first time around. But what had Lilian set into motion and did she get what she wanted all along? You’ll have to read it for yourself.
Content warning: This book had more graphic violence than the previous ones.
I received a free audiobook from the author and have reviewed it willingly.
I’ve said it before and don’t mind repeating myself. JC Kang’s Legends of Tivara is so superb that it’s convinced me that an Asian medieval setting is the best place for fantasy novels to take place. Now, in Last Bloom of the Jade Lotus: A Legends of Tivara Story (Scions of the Black Lotus Book 6) we get the conclusion of the Floating World segment of Scions of the Black Lotus. Unassailable castle are not insurmountable to Jie (the half elf assassin who might just be my favorite fantasy character), Tian, and other members of the Black Lotus clan’s Floating World cell. The rebellion’s ringleader May be holed up there but there we are all in for a few surprises, as well as superb action in a totally fun book That was superbly written, with a great plot, a perfect cast and perfect world-building. Definitely recommended.
The adventures of Lillian’s life told through the memories of others. Most people remember their past adventures and experiences with Lillian fondly. The recollections are mostly of the time spent in the Floating World or training. The recalling of daily life chores made everything real. The plots and schemes are executed as expected, but there are some unexpected occurrences. This is Lillian’s life as seen through the eyes of other’s. The fighting scenes are tense and the adventures thrilling. Loving the continuing saga.
What an epic ending to this series. I have absolutely enjoyed and been thrilled with every installment. I didn’t see this ending coming which made it even better! Thank you JC Kang for such an amazing final installment and epic series over all. If you haven’t read these yet … They are a MUST HAVE!
